Wrong. Regardless of the gas, it makes ZERO sense for Childs NOT to have been infected. There is absolutely no way his story about seeing blair outside and going to chase him would be true. That's incredbily idiotic, puts himself in huge danger, and puts all of his pals in danger. Plus the director himself literally puts a camera shot showing the stairway up from the generator room is directly next to where Childs was standing on guard, and they show a scene where Childs is falling asleep and Mac walks up without him noticing. Blair came in through the generator room and assimilated Childs. Childs also took one of the other jackets on the rack since his was torn. Then when they see Childs come out into the snow, immediately the power goes out. This confirms that Blair is back in the generator room and not out in the snow. Childs was a thing.

It’s directly stated in the movie that the thing has to be stealthy because it is most vulnerable while it is consuming/absorbing people. So if Childs is really the thing at the end, why keep up the charade? They seem to both understand that all it would have to do is kill the final man then wait in the ice again to be discovered. So why would it even bother trying to fool him at the end, it has already won.

              Anonymous

Seems like that Thing was trying to get an idea of what happened since it was outside, and lure him into lowering his guard so it could then get another person to assimilate since two would be better. Childs would surely be more quick to apologize for him abandoning his post, not being there when they all needed him and contributing to getting everyone killed. He just says some dumb, obviously fake excuse like "I thought I saw Blair out in a blizzard so I decided to run out there by myself and get lost". Blair was able to take out Garry and Nauls in seconds each. And Blair was inside the building near where Childs was.

I always thought that Childs was a thing, but they agreed to a truce at the end, because Macready couldn't torch someone he wasn't sure was a thing, and the Thing had no reason to provoke him, so they both called it a night.

  9. 7 months ago
    Anonymous

Yes, but why is MacReady so happy about it?
The thing is going to freeze and be unfrozen when people eventually recover their bodies, but MacReady is going to be dead.

It's a pretty tense movie, I like to think MacReady is tired and glad for the end of the horror, even if the end is ambiguous.

MacReady is a chess player. When you're in danger of being checkmated, the "winning" move for you is to force a stalemate. He accomplished that, and just like the Norwegians before him, allowed humanity another try, another match.

        Anonymous

it's established that he's bad at chess, and a sore loser, not the kind who is satisfied by a stalemate.

          Anonymous

It's not an actual chess match and the ending mirrors the beginning. He even pours the bottle into The Thing the way he did the computer.

sure. except there wasn't gasoline in the bottle because

Why wouldn't the thing be able to tell it was drinking gasoline by the time it had taken over childs?

The whole theme of the movie is paranoia and the inability to trust anyone. You don't know who the Thing is. MacReady for the first time knows who the Thing is. And it's full of highly flammable liquid.

The Thing wasn't perfect. It couldn't tell that this hanging thing was a noose that would indicate a problem with Blair and should be taken down. It's way better anyway if it's not perfect and has small tells.

        >It couldn't tell that this hanging thing was a noose that would indicate a problem
I seriously hope you're memeing. The noose was attempt at sympathy. It was a deliberate play. "Hey, I'm going to kill myself" if anything it only further proves it can imitate perfectly. It even understands human emotion immediately. The only thing it did wrong here was over play it's hand.

That's just your headcanon and not what Carpenter was obviously showing. Blair was going to kill himself, but was taken over by the thing while he was in the shack. He got two damn scenes to specifically show that he's far different and acting weird in the second.

Why would the thing know that? Do you assume it studied humans before crash landing in the ship (likely long before modern humans existed)

It replicates everything, even memories. The fact that it can act as the person it just infected is proof of this.

It doesn’t actually do that good of a job pretending to be the person though

The fact that people still debate who was infected at what point in the movie 40 years later shows how wrong you are.

  16. 7 months ago

It's the lamest, dumbest fan theory possibly ever. The Thing replicates it's host perfectly. It even initiates a person's heart problems, and subsequent heart attack. So logic would dictate it replicates your taste buds. It replicates everything else. So even an infected Childs would spit the gasoline out and be like "What the frick?"

Childs represents the thing, which Macready has taken to a stalemate
    Thing knows it will freeze
    Macready knows he will freeze
They literally agree that they're both too cold and weak to fight it out (whether Childs is human or not)
Macready gives Childs a drink, like he gave the chess computer a drink
He laughs in amused despair before he dies
    >the video game doesn't count
    >the gasoline theory is wrong
    >the breath theory is wrong
