Everybody saw Avatar in the cinema because the 3D was new technology. It was going to save ticket sales. Then the movie sucked and 3D TVs were released and people got bored of 3D and eventually only ghosts saw Avatar 2.

No it wasn’t, Avatar is just one of a very small number of movies that was actually shot for 3D abs hence looks good in 3D, most 3D films (and they’ve been around for decades) look like shit
              >the movie sucked
It’s above average in quality, even the predictable is well paced and effective, the cinematography and direction are both good, the performances are all middling to good except for worthington who’s stiffness is appropriate for a former marine
              >and 3D TVs were released and people got bored of 3D and eventually only ghosts saw Avatar 2.

You didn’t make any actual points, just non-arguments.
What does it not do right? What about the movie’s structure is “wrong”? How is the direction or cinematography bad? Is there anything wrong with the sound? What’s wrong with the plotting of the movie? Are any character motivations inconsistent?
Or do you not actually have any substantive criticisms? And don’t just say “the dialogue is cliche” because that’s true but is not enough to support the negative assessment you gave.

I I think that a significant segment of the people who like avatar and hence are responsible for its financial success are people who don’t spend lots of time with movies and instead have other primary interests. This is partially projection from my own perspective. I almost never go to the movie theatre I almost never watch new movies mostly some old favourites and And for them I don’t watch them that often, I spend a lot more of my free time playing vidya and reading books than watching movies, prior to avatar 2 the last movie I saw in the theatres was Dune, over a year prior. I think the people that watch avatar only go to the movie theatres when there’s something they really want to see that really appeals to a movie theatre sensibility basically something as bombastic as capeshit but with some actual soul, and not needing to see 15 other movies to enjoy it

Yeah the Tom cruise movies also fall into this category

The sequel confirmed James is a shallow and shortsighted filmmaker. The original plot was Pocahontas, and the Sequel is Pocahontas meets moby dick. This trash will not be remembered.

      >durr it moby-dick cos it about whales
Moby-Dick is about the relationship between man and God/reality as defined by man’s limited perspective through the vein of whaling because it’s something the author knew well, it’s not about environmental exploitation.
Star Wars is just The Hidden Fortress but set in space with Moebius’ visual aesthetic
Midwitticisms can reduce any work of art to a summation of related tropes
You don’t honestly think that Pocahontas is the first story to have that structure, do you?

        Anonymous

        >Star Wars is just The Hidden Fortress but set in space with Moebius’ visual aesthetic
Star Wars is barely the Hidden Fortress. Apart from the initial sequence with R2 and C3P0 wandering the desert there's nothing linking the movies. Even the "sneak a princess through enemy territory" aspect is a completely different context and execution.

          Anonymous

My point was that it’s easy to make reductive criticisms of narrative stories that are extremely superficial when there’s either some influence or some level of universality in the story telling. Not that Star Wars actually is just Hidden Fortress, but calling it hidden fortress in space is the same as calling avatar Pocahontas in space

The Avatar movies occupy a very weird space in pop culture. Everyone knows the imagery from them but nobody can name a single character or recite a single scene. It's hard to explain why but I think this anon might be on the mark. Sort of like the Bond movies, Avatar is basically an institution in and of itself. It has both die hard fans who know everything about it, but also its generic characters and plot appeal to casual moviegoers who watch it and then don't ever talk about it simply because there's not actually much to think about, hence the lack of impact on movie discourse when compared to dumber fare like Marvel, or more highbrow stuff.

Mostly Marveltards who are jealous that it has so much industry, critical and box office success while nobody takes their capeshit seriously. They can't appreciate the simplicity. It always makes me think of that Ebert quote, and I'm glad Avatar doesn't have a vocally cringey fanbase like Star Wars/MCU.
      >Extreme fandom may serve as a security blanket for the socially inept, who use its extreme structure as a substitute for social skills. If you are Luke Skywalker and she is Princess Leia, you already know what to say to each other, which is so much safer than having to ad-lib it. Your fannish obsession is your beard. If you know absolutely all the trivia about your cubbyhole of pop culture, it saves you from having to know anything about anything else. That's why it's excruciatingly boring to talk to such people: They're always asking you questions they know the answer to.

You're just delusional. Avatar 1 was an impressive tech demo, but beyond that it was the most shallow and formulaic mass appeal movie you could think of. I'm assuming the sequel is just more of the same. The hate comes from midwits making it as successful as it is and pretending there's any substance. I also hate the sw sequels and marvel slop for mostly the same reason - throwing that out there before you let your delusions drag you further from reality.

It's completely true. It's even found an interestingly different way to approach space fantasy. In that all of this is sci-fi based on real science (even Eywa) and used to recreate fantasy imagery (Ikran = Dragons, Recom = Demons, Fairy wing jellyfish and immaculate conception).

I was whatever on Avatar for a long time but didn't like how smarmy Marvelgays ragged on it. I also love Cameron so I caught the re-release last year and really liked it. Then caught Way of the Water and loved it.

Avatar has better value but homosexuals are blinded by Marvel writing and muh iconic status to see the art of it. It even has better art direction than entirety of SW besides the original trilogy.

if spider wasn't in A2 or at the very least put some fricking pants on and stopped acting like such a gay it would have been better. it also just felt kinda droll and samey after the first movie had such a massive, climactic series of events and character development. 7.5/10

no, what? the tarzan thing was just shitty and weird. i didn't need to see his fricking ass hanging out the whole movie, the dreads were gay, he overstayed his welcome running alongside a full bunch of CGI characters, and he was just a poor actor and a poor casting. him hissing was also supreme cringe as well. no need to make him full on "wolf child." it was impossible to take him seriously and the name spider wasn't working for me too. bad all around. his motivations were serviceable and his actions were fair, he was just annoying and gay, simple as.

          Anonymous

also while i'm at it. the two sons were an annoying and cheap addition just like spider himself was a MAJOR, out of left field contrivance. adding two new characters in who are the sons of the MC just to try and kill one of them off for shock in the SAME MOVIE is a weak as frick move writing-wise... and the "he actually had an unknown son that will break the shell around his heart" is parody-of-shakespeare level melodramatic. i think it was a good movie but it was NOT without major flaw

    >avatar as a definitive space opera

As a sci fi fan who has watched cringeload of sci fi related stuff since my teen years - yet i havent watched avatar and i have no desire to do so. Watched a trailer once and it literally seemed to be some communist trehugger woke propaganda videogame with some good graphics. I honestly did not detect an ounce of creativity in the trailer, and none of my guy workmates or friends ever said something along the lines "avatar was so cool, story was awesome, characters great, girls were so hot, it was so funny you should see it etc etc", in fact avatar has never even been brought up at all in our discussions.

So today, ill rewatch old favorite instead- Invasion Earth (1998) miniseries, witch is as far from cartoongraphics and happy endings as it gets.

I think I'll get around to actually watching my blu-ray soon. Watched in the theater four times and twice online with tsmukan (that was really fricking cool tbh, booked my whole day around those two days, thanks streaming anon), been happy to leave it there for a while. But the itch to go again has been latent in the past few months. PBU Jimbo, the December theatrical date for The Abyss will make a lot more sense now (the climax was a clear re-hash of the drowning theme present both in Abyss and Titanic).

Open task: acquire a hard-copy sequel soundtrack CD if if exists. I really worry about the elimination of hard copy media as this thing goes on.

Idea: several/most principal characters are now problematized in various and interesting ways, part-human, -part-Na'vi, the story's central tension.

The original avatar was amazing for reasons the audience will not admit.
The main female leads are a generic wine aunt girl boss and a u go grl helicopter pilot. There's your appeal to women.
For cucks, there is the dork scientist.
Then you get to the overall main character. He is beaten and unappreciated by his own people. He went to war for them, and when he got fricked up and couldn't walk, they said 'like, I know we said we'd take care of you but you seem really creepy right now, have fun surviving in the streets lol'.
Then he goes to this alien planet and acts like a violent psychopath, and instead of hatred, the elder says 'we will see if your illness can be cured'. The liberals watching interpret this as tree hugging, bur she is actually referring to his need to chase after people who only see him as something to be used.
This tribe of savages gives him cultural inclusion, respect and ultimately, genetic enfranchisement (even if I still have problems with tsutey getting cucked).
He tries to keep both the old and the new world, but the old burns the new and locks him up. And then something amazing happens: Jake turns on them. James Cameron actually managed to pass through hollywood a story about a white man revolting against an abusive matriarchal anarcho capitalist/communist system. And every white dude watching it, next to the shrikes they paypig or orbit for, understood: they'd do the same fricking thing.
The movie appeals to everyone. I haven't seen the sequel but if you remove all the other nonsense guys are just going to continue to indulge in their new little house on the prairie with blue nerve tail pussy fantasy cameron has constructed for them.
No modern guy can relate to an assassin droid or some ancient warrior of mandalor, the characters may as well be gay, men have penises and relate to characters who also act like they have penises.

It really hasn’t “fully replaced” it. Kids aren’t into avatar. I don’t see avatar action figures and lego sets being sold in stores, nor any Avatar video games. There are zero references to it in other media, whereas the 80s and 90s were full of “I am your father” jokes and Mel Brooks made an entire feature-length parody of Star Wars called Spaceballs. It’s vaguely the same genre but that’s it, Avatar barely makes a mark on the culture because it’s basically just unimaginative slop.

Why are people so obsessed with the idea that no one likes avatar? What about avatar causes this vitriol, its not even intensely political or too subtle (apparently way too subtle). How many movies and billies will make you stop churning out inane takes like no cultural impact, no funko pops, no memes, tech demo, akshually it's woke, akshually it's racist, akshually the billies aren't real and it's a psyop

    >somehow Quaritch returned
    >he thinks he is not Quaritch, but still has the desire to take revenge on Jake Sully
    >movie takes place in and around ocean while characters ride fish, objectively boring and lame setting compared to floating mountains and riding dragons
    >navi children who i couldn't tell apart, one died but I didn't know or care which one
    >whale juice was the new unobtainium, but only mentioned for a second for no reason
    >carmela soprano was there as an unnecessary extra antagonist and did a terrible job in her role
    >characters could wear a jellyfish as wings and somehow use that to breathe underwater? Extremely moronic plot point, could have just used respirators that we previously saw Quaritch use in human environment

It absolutely sucks that hollywood, if they care about sci fi, only wants to do character drama sci fi lite.
They're unwilling to risk anything to do hard sci fi anymore.
exception: possibly rebel moon but we'll see how that goes.

In reality it's a series about loving and conserving nature.

The funny thing is, the intended audience (white people) already get that. those destroying the rain forests and environment are not white people.
Take Way of Water. White people aren't killing whales. The Japanese are.
