If I were him, I would being training a secret apprentice that would kill the Emperor for me when the time is right.
Maybe give him a quirky robot buddy or something.

Sounds like a great idea. Then when the Emperor shows up, you stab the apprentice in the back and toss him out to space because you're a pussy.

Come to think of it - you think that Starkiller and Mara Jade ever bumped into each other during their routines in the Imperial palace?

They went too far with this. His actions in The Empire Strikes Back, in light of the events of The Return of the Jedi, were an attempt to escape slavery to evil, but his means were evil. He wanted to be free but without changing his evil ways (suffering a cost), which is why he failed. If he's acknowleding his mistakes, then he's already beyond the error he makes in ESB

To be fair, Legends did show Vaders human side coming out in rare moments, examples being Clone Pilot Contrail and lieutenant Erv Lekauf, both men had the highest Respect from Vader, with Lekauf being the closest thing the dark lord had to a friend, both men sacrificed themselves to save Vader, Lekauf survived while Contrail didint.

        >If you were to serve under my command, would you ever disobey an order?"
        >Yes, sir, but only if it helped you to live longer.
        Contrail and Vader

This. If you only watch the OT without supplemental material, Vader’s an evil dude that only turns when he sees Luke break the cycle.
        >First movie he’s entirely dead set on ending the rebels no matter what, and has no qualms with Tarkin destroying worlds.
        >Second movie focuses on Luke Skywalker, but ultimately his goal is to otherthrow the Emperor specifically so they can take over, not to do anything than garner more power.
        >Third movie has Vader’s bravado start to chip when Luke begins trying to reason with him, but Vader still attempts to prove that Palpatine’s right. Then when he sees Luke completely reject the Dark Side, he finally understands that he can still make a decision in the now and saves his son.
I never took Vader as someone who wallows in self pity, just a good man who became a cold blooded killer, but right at the ends decided to do one last good act.

They also establish in the prequels several times that Anakin is anti-democracy. He kept seeing the senate never get anything done with their bickering and kept going "It would work better if someone just took charge". So he was always for the concept of the Empire and was basically like "Well I'd rather it was ME in charge but I can't take Palpatine in this shit robot suit so I'll just wait for an opportunity"

He is one of the most powerful people in the galaxy for over twenty years. He has a massive castle and gets the largest Star Destroyer even build. He gains command of the entire Imperial military. He has legal impunity for even the most heinous crimes. That is a lot of money and a lot of privilege.

He's a slave working 20 hours per day for free like a mindless robot, being send to follow the orders of random officers like Tarkin, even Grievous and Dooku were allowed to have some luxury and autonomy unlike him, the Emperor was shown barely tolerating him doing anything for personal reasons.

        I can't get over this.
This is so painfully realistic it can't not be canon.
Imagine being Darth Vader in this moment.
Imagine realizing you went from being a shitty moody teenager who threw away his life and went insane for nothing to a half-living machine who functions entirely off of rage and then seeing this fat b***h treat you like some sort of fricking god.
This is what you get. This is the price of the Dark Side.

that's basic jedi thinking. dark side is just another part of the force that should be analysed and practised as it's not evil in the sense that jedi would think, but just an unknown part of it. there is no true balance concerning the force as there will be always someone who would discover it's true potential and try to harness it for himself/herself like rakatans regardless whether sith or jedi exists or not. getting to control the force means mastering both light and the dark side. that's why palpie has a better understanding of it more than any other jedi in the galaxy.

the force is karmic. karma is the issue here. take karma out, you get a universe closer to ours but that means the bad guys can win all the time. so you better pay attention to politics and read karl marx

it's not for kids, it's for adults. but those who own the copyright want it to be for kids because to take sw seriously necessitates political stories, and educating the working class contraindicates the interests of those who own the IP

Guess what, Cinemaphile! You're going to learn to use a lightsaber!

Would you rather have Yoda teach you Ataru, Obi-Wan teach you Soresu, Anakin teach you Djem So, Dooku teach you Makashi, Kit Fisto teach you Shii-Cho, or Mace teach you Vaapad?

You can only choose one to become "above average" in, and you have to choose wisely! The evil Darth Sidious is going to kill you if you can't last 60 seconds in a duel with him!
