John Gotti was arguably the most powerful boss in the US when he was imprisoned. He got into it with a black guy and had his ass beaten. He had to pay the Aryan Brotherhood for protection. He stopped paying them after a while and had to be transferred or the AB would have killed him. Not many wiseguys in prison, especially when they send you to Arizona, Georgia or Texas.

Right, this isn't Goodfellas, the mob in Sopranos is a dying entity that barely maintains control over strip-mall tug joints and trade contractors.
At best they're able to manipulate street-level police and have like a handful of soldiers per crew.
Phil definitely got his gay ass perforated in prison by some black guys.

Just finished season 5 the third time around and i've been thinking about this.
    >The Mercedes G-Wagen was originally designed for the Shah of Iran.
    >A G-Wagen appears in the test dream, at the end of a tunnel when Tony's running away from a mob.
    >This symbolizes his feud with Phil being the "End of the Road" for Tony
I'm almost certainly reaching, but it seems fitting.

Italian Mafia still exists in Jersey but it's more deep connections with local municipalities than anything. Strip malls in Jersey are known for never having any business for their tattoo shops/vape shops/massage shops despite none of them having any actual customers. Because they exist to create fame businesses to launder money through. Waste management is still Mafia controlled but made semi-legit due to gov't contracts. And just WOPS robbing other WOPS and extracting $ from commercial rental properties. Real greaseball shit. Also all the boardwalks are mafia-run and used for laundering, as well. Everyone gets their kick and nobody's asking too many questions. Also strip clubs and prostitution. Probably drugs too but they have enough middle men it never leads back to them.
      >t. have lived at the jersey shore for over 30 years.

The Detroit Partnership still exists and years back I did flower deliveries for a while and was told by the flower shop owner that one of the places I had made a stop at, (off Garfield Rd north of Hall Rd) was a mafia family. Probably bullshit but it was a typical McMansion that a mid-level mobster would own.

        >typical McMansion that a mid-level mobster would own.
Mafia people don't have a lot of brains and are kind of like Black folk. Ironically if they just got educations and got nirmal jobs they'd just live slightly less nice lives but not have to worry about getting shot to death. Mafia dudes pull in cash money but unless they have some shylock accountant frick it up quick. Been to a few mafia houses. McMansions in private cul-de-sac developments. Tasteless inside. Wives are hot but ageing and obviously are on binge/purge cycles. Businesses under the thumb are either immigrants happy to have a stable place to run their businesses (see: most chinese takeouts in NJ) and will pay a vig or else just fronts with no actual clientele that only exist to launder through. These wop morons could actually have a better business model just by managing properties they own and go legit but I think these guineas just like the danger and action involved. Because, you know, they're greasy low-IQ eye-ties.

There was this Chinese restaurant down the road (we called it Hung Way Lo) that was in business for years but other then a few people at lunch time, literally had zero customers and was more than likely a money laundering front for organized crime.

We had a Chinese restaurant like that in my town. It was right by my friends' houses, so we were constantly riding our bikes by. There was never any business there, but then at weird hours late in the evening there would be a few luxury cars parked there. Cars that were way nicer than any others in the neighborhood. We were sure it was organized crime.

Sounds about right. An ex CI once told me the cling onto this belief that the world is a horrible place and has irreversibly turned them into horrible people. In turn, they create a social circle that instills the same belief into others so they themselves don't feel alone and guilty of their own sins.

          Really fricked in a way.

      >Does the Italian mafia even have that much weight anymore besides maybe some prisons on the east coast?
      Yes.
      They still run some unions.
They still are involved in gambling and loan sharking.
I suspect they’re still heavily involved in the drug trade, based on secondary facts.
There are almost certainly arraignments in place that discourage the police and news services (the major newspapers and networks) from mentioning mafia involvement in local crime.
The control and extent of mafia involvement in local crime likely varies by city and region.
Most major cities likely have more that one criminal gang controlling different sections of the city and region, with general truces to prevent major crime wars.
In my major East Coast city, It seems there may be an arraignment were the Mayorship gets passed around between the different factions.

Don’t frick with local mafia guys.
Don’t place bets or borrow money and not pay it back.
They will hurt you, or kill you, and do so unpleasantly.
The FBI still investigates the mafia, and if you pose a threat by testifying, they will likely kill you.

The movie Drive is likely somewhat accurate.
