UAF Vilgax should've been a different character, a brother or son of Vilgax or something that set out to get revenge on Ben for imprisoning him, that way you can keep regular UAF Vilgax's stuff and have the OG show up and do his own thing, have them interact and conflict on-screen or have it be the basis of plots, there were a dozen different ways to handle that
The quality of a Ben 10 era is reflected by the quality of its Vilgax.

Omniverse had the most comedy of the original continuity but I don't think that's a good reason to discount it completely, especially when it has some really good serious episodes like the and then there were none/was ben two parter which is honestly one of the highest points of the whole franchise.

Maybe controversial but while I enjoyed gwen and kevin as characters I feel like they took a little too much of the spotlight from ben with their relatively boring powers. Rook was a little underdeveloped but I enjoyed him, and he's just useful enough to be interesting in a fight scene without keeping ben from being the star attraction.

1.I feel like it would’ve worked better if they spent more time in the first episode with the trio or at least have Gwen and Kevin not just leave so abruptly like it felt like a beginning to a spin off
2.the comedy had ups and downs but they at least didn’t force it in important moments and the artstyle was designed by the guy that did the 03 teen titans artstyle so people screaming about that while ov was airing was hypocritical since this was during the period when people really started dickriding avatar and teen titans (made worse from Korra and especially teen titans go airing)
Going from UAF taking itself seriously to OV's borderline parody was the worst kind of tonal whiplash.
People hated on OV at first for a lot of reasons, like it being more kiddie compared to UAF, it's artstyle, the design of aliens like Bloxx, shittier transformation sequences, etc. but over time it's definitely gotten a reevaluation and people give it a lot more of the credit that it's due

Being able to switch between serious and comedic is fine, and while OV wasn't perfectly balanced in that regard, at least it felt more consistent than UAF. I still hate how Ben went from competent and largely selfless in the first two seasons of AF, to suddenly being a selfish prick after defeating the Highbreeds. It was like someone said "we need to make him a little c**t, like when he was a kid" and then proceeded to somehow make him even more obnoxious than he ever was when he was still a little brat.
Iirc that’s what the heads at CN wanted, for Ben to go back to something like his OS self. And the crew working on it did not like that decision obviously
The personality change feels really jarring in sudden in UAF and somewhat at odds with its tone but come OV it feels so natural, if only because the unfortunately lighter tone.
I wouldn't quite say it was unfortunate, they at least found a reasonably better balance between Ben being a dumb teen, but able to act like the hero he's grown into over the years.

Isn't that a problem with reoccurring villains in general? Can't have them win since the show will be over, so they either take Ls constantly or don't show up at all
Some villains can pull it off, Albedo and Animo are always pretty good when they come back. But part of their gimmick is that they’re kinda theatrical and they always fail usually in funny ways
In the case of serious, deadly villains, it is a very difficult task. Freeza is a pretty interesting case, since he was able to get into some comical moments fitting for that era of Dragon Ball's humor. Vilgax got messed up by being turned into a diet DCAU villain, and then joke of his former self with only like two episodes of being anything remotely resembling his classic series self. As you said, it's the matter of allowing the villains some kind of victory, even if it's not their primary goal being fulfilled, but something that could enable furthering of their ambitions
Is Frieza still threatening? Every time he returns, he's somehow even stronger (like Vilgax mostly) but the stakes have been ramped up so high that it doesn't even seem relevant anymore

Honestly not really, it seems like Vilgax gave up on trying to out-muscle ben after his first comeback and he's relied on schemes and team ups ever since.
Not that guy, but it did help that Vilgax generally remained capable of matching nearly every alien blow for blow, even knowing the weaknesses of many and thus smacking their shit sideways when Ben thought "this should do the trick"
I guess the ones that stick out most in my head are when he returned with the power of 10 heroes in AF, and as Cthulhu in UA. And then in Omniverse he wasn't physically stronger but had some sort of timeline-eating macguffin

I didn't like what they did with ben's character in Alien force, the idea of Ben as a leader was all tell don't show and team Alien force ends up as just Ben Gwen Kevin and a couple randos, sure it's not till OV that Ben really feels like a teenage version of OS Ben but he gets there in the end.
I mean, it made some sense for teen Ben to be more mellowed out, even if it did seem like they implied some great tragedy was what led to him abandoning the watch for five years. As fun as bratty Ben was in the original series, that could only go so far before it'd just feel like Ben was just being moronic for the sake of making the plots happen.That said, I can agree that they could have done more with Ben struggling to be a leader since he didn't really have any trouble gathering the team and having them help him
In my opinion SotO Ben was what Ben was meant to be if the show didn't reset his personality to keep the show episodic in nature. Passionate but not as impulsive by the end, a softer edge but it's clear he's grown to care for his cousin. By the end of that movie I can clearly see how this Ben grows into Ben 10K.

Not in the main continuity. Raditz and Nappa art still dead, Cell is still dead, Kid Buu is dead (and got reincarnated into a poo in the loo), Zamasu got erased from existence, etc. The only villain who ever came back and stayed was Frieza. You might be thinking of spinoffs like Super Dragon Ball Heroes or Xenoverse which do bring back classic villains for their rogues gallery but in the main continuity if a villain dies they tend to stay dead.
He finally put his mind to training for an extended period of time and is now well above Goku and Vegeta's weight class
this is why giving your villains goals other than just killing the mc is important because those can actually be achieved which means 1) that goal can be achieved and 2) the audience can reasonably assume it can possiby happen and therefore gives suspense whereas simply having the villain try and kill the mc doesn't usually since in most stories the mc has plot armor and we know they won't die

Like maybe the first few seasons are Max planning a roadtrip similar to the Goofy Movie, then once the destination is reached, they wander around before making their way back to Bellwood. This way, it can still be fairly episodic, but also have a clearer sense of the summer trip instead of them just hopping all over the damn US like Max is made of gas money

Posted this before, but as questionable as his writing was post-OS, Vilgax was always presented as a real threat.
Even when Ben didn't take him seriously, or thought he had an advantage, he always had a new plan to gain the advantage. He always managed to take something from Ben, or push him into going all out.
I don't like everything they did with him, but I can appreciate a lot of it in hindsight.
If you can count on one thing it’s that Vilgax never stays gone. Like Ben said “You can’t keep a bad man down”
He's done everything from trying to blow up the Earth, to trying to conquer it legally.
He made a deal with a demon and then betrayed the demon.
He wiped out the fricking multiverse.
And last, but not least, he finally got so mad he just uppercut Ben to the moon.
