Heat shootout scene

Watching the movie rn
>three dudes take out an army of policemen
>not a single cop lands a single shot
How can I take this shit seriously? It's so fricking stupid. The movie was kino up until this point.

The movie was not "kino". This entire scene is shit though.

Michael mann is a moron. Never made a good movie besides collateral and thats only saved because of cruise.

I like it, but I always thought it was shot and edited in such a way that you can't tell who's where in relation to one another.

I'm guessing you're a zoomer. But yeah its slightly unrealistic but not impossible. If all three bank robbers have had military training and assault rifles, they could really give the first responder cops a run for their money. Google North Hollywood shootout. Long story short: well equipped military trained bank robbers > under-equipped cops.

they "teach it" because the cops are under-equiped and have bad positioning for taking on guys with automatic weapons

im sire they use this as an example of the same thing

People will claim it's the greatest, most realistic shoot out ever put to film. I like a lot of parts of Heat but the movie never seemed as good as people make it out to be. Maybe I just don't appreciate action as a genre enough. I see people praise John Wick similarly but not as much and that seemed like cheesy shit to me, not some realistic operator kino like I've seen many claim.

the cops who had pistols didn't do much
the robbers started dropping when the special agents showed up properly armed

      >Google North Hollywood shootout
And yet they failed to actually kill anyone. And they were inside a building as opposed to an open street like in the movie

Look, it might be the most realistic scene ever, but to me as an average watcher, it just looks ridiculous. Even if something is possible irl it may look stupid on screen. I think the scene in the movie is over the top.

that is correct, it's actually pretty incredible that no civilian or officer was killed considering the amount of rounds that were fired.

        Margot Robbie

the north hollywood robbers were in fact on the street most of the time moving behind cars and trying to get to their getaway vehicle. They were killed outside, they left the bank rather early.

        >not a single cop lands a single shot

Two of the four thieves in Heat were killed by the cops, a third was shot and incapacitated. You have been wrong about everything you try to post

The only thing unrealistic about the Heat shootout is that they were mag-dumping on full-auto rather than rapid semi-auto, but even in 2023 filmmakers rarely depict semi-auto rifle engagements.

Does this have to do with recoil or with muzzle heat or what?

Mag dumping usually doesn't work. You're not going to see what the frick you're shooting at and you're barrel will be not as stable.

It's a waste of ammo and you won't hit shit.

My biggest issue with this part of an otherwise fine crime drama is the cops teleporting to the bank and the piss poor procedure they used. You do not advance on perps leaving the scene, you allow them to get into the vehicle, surround and apprehend. They had full knowledge of who and what they were up against.

Okay. You must be a joy to be around. Anyway, I prefer the shootouts in Way of the Gun but Heat is one of my favorites. You sound like a contrarian who hates a thing because it is popular.

Not too long ago an army of cops just stood outside a school and let some chud go to town inside because they were cowards. Honestly, that was probably the most realistic part of the movie

I definitely agree about how well done the scene is. The audio is still basically unmatched and the lengths they went to film it are impressive. I just can't stand the leagues of people who suck off a movie for treating guns realistically and act like that's enough for a movie to stand in its own. I admit my autism got the better of me but I'm sick of "well the whole movie sucked but the character used trigger discipline so that makes it a masterpiece"

Cinemaphile tricked me into rewatching this, and all the relationship shit was fricking awful, especially with DeNiro. Am I really supposed to believe this disciplined bank robber, hardened con is just going to suddenly give everything up for some woman that he literally just met and barely knows? It's fricking moronic. And Pacino is fricking hamming it up to the max.

        Anonymous

Agreed. Also, DeNiro and Pacino's scene together seems kinda lame and forced to me, like the filmmakers were thinking "we're selling this movie based on these two actors being both in it, so we have to have a scene of them together". Then when they interact it's just cliche "we're not so different, you and I" type of stuff.

Yeah its cheesy cliche tacky etc but I still enjoyed it. I love these type of 90s movies where shit just feels right

Mann directed parts of a show or a short film or some shit years before Heat, the exchanges between Pacino and DeNiro are lifted almost entirely from that

It was a TV movie, it's not identical but Heat is most definitely a remake.

                >The original 180 page screenplay predates both L.A. Takedown (1989) and Heat (1995), it was written in the late 70s and then revised after Michael Mann had finished Thief (1981). When making the TV movie version, Mann had to severely abridge the original script and abstracted around 110 pages from the 180 page script, making the TV movie not fully developed compared to the later cinematic version.

Yes their scenes are awful. The bad acting when they have coffee is only overshadowed by the complete absurdity of them holding hands at the airport while DeNiro dies.

I thought this scene was allright, same as the rest of the movie really. Not amazing but enjoyable. When I first saw it in the cinema I thought it was a 8/10. I've matured now and I rate it a 7/10. Comparing it to Heat is understandable and Heat wins that comparison in every aspect.
