it couldve been funny if this comit in particular delivered it well enough to earn its stay, but nothing in it has any weight or reaction and it looks like it was drawn by a 13 year old girl

Depending on her length, he may very well have been within striking distance from the moment he entered the cave, and moving closer has simply made it harder for her to lunge effectively.
It's not about moving fast, it's about striking fast. Within their striking range (half to 2/3 of their total length, depending on species), a snake will accelerate with almost 6 times the G force it takes to make a pilot black out. Give them a lance and a defensive position and their low metabolism would let them hold a line for weeks without being safely approached.
