In the commentary track they mention how the actor who played her boyfriend didn't understand that he was a minor character and that's all. The actor kind of resented that the Kirsty actor/character took care of herself and didn't need him to swoop in and help.
He's really just around for like one or two scenes, but he is present at the climax and walks into the haunted house with no context like wtf is going on. He's trapped with Kirsty when they are confronted by the Engineer and he tries to help but Kirsty has to snap at him and grab the box away from him so she can get the damn thing closed.
The director's cut of Nightbreed is quite good, and it's not like Hellraiser is great because it's oh so well directed. It's high on B movie camp in a lot of ways, and was itself dismissed as poorly made schlock when it came out.
I love Barker but I wish he'd been willing to be involved in the writing of more adaptations of his work without being director. (I know that Rawhead Rex traumatized him)

What's amazing about Barker is that he knew frick all about making a movie. He mentions in an interview that the only thing he did upon becoming the director was grab a book about cameras because he didn't knew shit about them either.
Barker hated Hellraiser and especially Pinhead because he had the least to do with his popularity. It was all makeup, Bradley’s performance, and marketing putting Pinhead on the cover. Scarlett Gospels is shit and just Barker seething
