Was this the season 1 finale? What were the legal issues?
Kesha wrote the song, may have sung it. Her producer either wanted a big payout for her performance or just said frick no because they're producers. She finally settled a lawsuit against them so they were allowed to release the episode, but it's someone else singing it, but she voice acted the speaking lines for the character if you feel like looking at the credits at the end.

Then what's the point? You get a pop star for your character, there's an expectation that she would sing at some point.
Producers are buttholes like that. Michael Jackson had the same issue with The Simpsons apparently.
When I hear about shit like this, I often wonder what goes on in the minds of producers. There's often such a disconnect between the creative aspect and the producing aspect, it's a wonder anything gets done.
Marketing is mostly a scam and marketing people run the creative industries. It's why the mainstreama is so inexplicably stagnates
It is even worse when they get woke, and the level of garbage just increases but also becomes insulting.
To be fair, the issue with the music and the artist is who REALLY owns it or has the right to utilize it. In MJs case with the Simpsons they probably paid the money to have him on but not enough to also have him SING. Maybe if they got Fox to shell out more they could have gotten a track of one of his hits but even then I'd doubt they do that.
You'd be incredibly surprised how stingy people are with not just IPs but usage of any media they own on a large scale. Still it does beg the question "why have a musical guest if you can't even get them to sing?"

A steep dive in quality with a HEAVY focus on character assassination (rather than actual assassinations), especially on the homosexual owl which basically becomes the main character and gets dragged through the mud as result.

No, season 1 was definitely serviceable while season 2 was way, way worse. I say that as someone who got into this show very late, back when Seeing Stars was out.
I was there from the start since I had been following Vivzie for a while and I was hate-watching S1. Yeah S2 makes S1 look good in comparison but it certainly isnt good on its own
Season 1 peaked at episode 2, then it was all down hill from there.
