Technically you can. They skip some detail, but it's generally not too important. The series covers the first book quite well in terms of main important plot points.

Do know however that some of the characters in the series are not the book ones by name, but are the same character. Luo Ji for example is a chinese schizo loser with some scientific background, but in the series he's the black guy Saul.

You'll notice it when you recognize the plot but not the character being at the center of it. The plot is generally unchanged, so it'll just ring bells when you start the second book.

You'll be reasonably confused but I think it's do-able. Not much from book 1 really carries forward, all you're missing out on is how based Da Shi is, but he's not a major character in the second book anyway.

Cultural revolution era is severely dumbed down. In the tencent version, her struggle was more about not being taken seriously as a woman. There is also no pay-off with her father's murderers. Her pressing the button regardless of warning was painted as a dumb action. Better explained in the netflix version, although the scenes themselves were more rushed and clumsy.

You realize the book is sold in china, yes?

In what form though? Parts of the book are like that ocassional copy-paste that anons post directed to Chinese, like "Tiananmen square, winny the pooh" etc. Maybe it's regarded as not so bad in book-form, or maybe it had its content altered.

It's not even that consequential that scene got removed. The events still happen. And that version has way more characterization of Ye Wenjie.

What would have really made an improvement is if they didn't hire english teachers off the streets to act as westerners, and not treated the Judgement Day crew as ridiculous cartoon villains.

It’s funny because “living in Soviet China” was enough justification for me.

She didn't just hate all of humanity because muh commies. It was her own mother and sister that betrayed her family. Then at the logging camp she saw how humans also destroyed all living things, read Silent Spring, then she was betrayed by her lover, then she got to the base, then she was betrayed again, then she killed some people, after which she realized all humans, even herself, are complete trash.
The idea that she doomed humanity just because some commies beat her dad to death is fricking moronic, but that's exactly what this netflix slop wants you moronic americans to think.

It's more substantial, what the frick are you on about? She opens up an inch, and the commies frick her even harder for it. Ye is betrayed at every turn by the hell of living in China, the struggle session is just the moment she went from a clueless child to living in reality.

I would add that while it skips the struggle session it does reference even the girls that tortured Ye's father.
It does feel like the skip is more related to "no violence" allowed more than save facing the culture revolution.
Even the boat getting cut at the end of the Chinese live adaptation is very light on explicit graphic images.

Personally, I turned it off about 5 minutes in.
Two things did it for me, first was the junior cop saying something like 'Bookies gave him the best odds to win a nobel prize'. Felt like brainlet exposition and a really pathetic way to show the dead guy was SMART.
Second thing was when the main detective had a shocked reaction to seeing the guy had his eyes gouged out. The only reason it was shocking is because the lighting was dogshit - I feel like the cops would have turned the lights on high to make their job of searching the apartment easier. Additionally, I feel like he would have been briefed before entering the flat. Felt contrived to create a shocking scene, when the visual is shocking enough. It doesn't also need to surprise the detective.
Whole scene felt like a first draft with placeholder dialogue - I'm glad I turned it off.

Book 2 is arguably the best of the 3, but that is slightly hard to argue because Book 3 is a masterpiece that just does not stop.

Book 1 is actually shit by comparison, especially when you get to the end, but it's a necessary evil, so you'll still appreciate it.

I personally found book 1 to be fantastic. The ending was so creative and interesting, absolutely like nothing I've ever read before. (That particle they sent in space). I'll definitely love 2 & 3 if what you say is true

It is, but by comparison to 2 and 3, it is just far inferior, partly because of the writing. Cixin Liu evolves as a writer, and it's REALLY noticable, especially when he gets to the 3rd one and starts swinging left and right.

He's a way better writer by the third one, and masters a whole bunch of narrative concepts, such as frame narratives, etc. to deliver a fantastic story.

Book 2 is the best not because of the characters or premise, but because of the significance of its plot line, which you evidently did not understand. However, due to what the 3rd book accomplishes, it simply cannot be said easily to be better.

In this story, because all 3 books kind of start off concurrently, they put all 3 together because that is chronologically accurate, and focus it on Cheng Xin who is Book 3's protagonist, because she is the actual protagonist of the entire narrative.

They very intelligently did this to speed up the first book which is kind of a slog, and to start Books 2 and 3 premises.

They changed Luo Ji (who is the protagonist of Book 2) into Saul Dorian or whatever the frick his name is in the show, and simplified Ye Wenjie who is the protagonist of Book 1, which is somewhat of a shame, but understandable, as Cheng Xin is the true focus of everything.

Cheng Xin's character is central to the entire philosophical thesis of the trilogy and the final message of book 3, that of selfishness and hard men v selflessness and soft men.

Up until the last chapter, ruthless characters like the Trisolarans, Wade and Luo Ji (archetypical Chinese) always come out on top and benefit humanity with their ruthless pragmatism. When the more empathetic and humanist Cheng Xin (archetypical West) makes a decision instead, this has always led to poor outcomes e.g. the Trisolaran invasion, the delay in developing FTL. Selfishness = you win, selflessness = you get fricked.

The ending then abruptly flips this. The final outcome of all this selfish pragmatism on a cosmic scale is pointless zero sum game wars collapsing the universe. Once you extrapolate the "dark forest" shit up to this level, nobody wins. The only hope left is to wipe the slate clean and have a new Big Crunch and then Big Bang. But so many have now taken refuge in their own pocket universes, and taken matter with them, that this may not even happen, instead there may be infinite heat death into oblivion of a dead, one-dimensional universe with not enough gravity to lead to a Big Crunch.

Uncountable people must now be selfless enough to return to the dying universe and bring their little bit of matter with them. In helping to ensure the universe is reborn, they give up their chance of living to see the rebirth. Their individual contribution will be so small as to be near meaningless, and they have no way to know whether enough others will also do the same. But it must happen, because otherwise there will be no future.

The end is Liu Cixin's final answer to the theme of selflessness versus selfishness, trust versus paranoia. Whereas ruthless paranoid shit has always won the day and brought benefit in the short term, ultimately only selflessness, cooperation and trust will ultimately bring about a positive outcome in the very, very long run.

Yeah, I think you have autism if this was your take-away from the series. Xin's actions have no impact, and there is no value in ensuring another universe because the same reality will come to pass. Matter hoarders are based, Xin is a dumb prostitute forever.

That was just the ending and in now wat the message of the books.

The real message was that acts that can seems selfless can be the most selfish ones. Like dooming the entire solar system so that you don't have to make a morally difficult choice yourself. Liu Cixin has confirmed this himself.

Her stupidity in accepting a position she knew she was unqualified for ended a situation which was mutually beneficial to Earth and Trisolarans, and ended up causing the destruction of most of both societies. Then her unwillingness in allowing a small scale war because it would have killed a few people ended up causing the death of far more. Selfishness vs selflessness has nothing to do with it. Those were simply bad decisions for all involved parties.

Being right in the one last thing she did doesn't retroactively justify or make those decisions any less catastrophically bad nor does it mean there's an underlying "ideology" that's common to all of them that is ultimately correct.

Pretty based take, just finished the entire trilogy and i agree with you. And ultimately Cheng's actions were irrelevant anyway. The MAD still occurred and her stopping the war would have been for the best with the destructive weapons they had.

It's about repeated games. The others were playing 1 round of the prisoners dilemma, but by trusting others and knowing there's another round, you can keep the game going forever, which turned out to be the ultimate objective of life.

The interesting thing would have been to flip the script by having him actually doing his plan on secret, and the ending reinteprets his actions. Instead lucks out because the ayys got wienery in a battle for their entire civilization. Probably to cater to morons like you, who couldn't even guess the solution when it's in the name.

Tell me Einstein, how do you generate H2O or even D2O or any other type of water from the vacuum of space? Or do you think they should go swim in the atmosphere of a gas giant?

Well, I imagine that if you wanted to un-frick their system you might try to propel one of the suns into another one, and then try to establish a stable orbit for the remaining suns or something like that. My point was that that would be an insane amount of work to do, and it would be far more feasible to just go somewhere else. I wasn't shitting on the book, my dude.

There is no unfricking the system at their technological level, but they could move to any different system if the system was the problem. It's not. The problem is water, and they're portrayed as a water based life-form intentionally, so that their designs on Earth would make sense. And they do.

Everyone that is white is either a soiboy, dies, or both. The rich soiboy gets killed. His best friend dies from pancreatic cancer and is also shown to show no inititative when it comes to the romantic (he is a cuck to the well-dressed indian). the "based" old white guy in charge isn't shown as a romantic lead because he is so old, so he doesn't count and is a distraction from the above propaganda. the one white redhead girl they show (who specifically mentions wanting to have kids) is killed literally within two minutes of her appearance.

It takes the Chinese version 30 episodes to get where the Netflrix goes in four. The Chinese version is closer to the first book, and sone of the Chinese actors like Wang Miao and Da Shi were very good. The Netflix cast is overall unlikable and or cringe and or girl boss/poc bullshit. The main problem with the Chinese version is I can't listen to it on background. At 30 episodes it would be super-comfy to zone out to.

Let's be honest, the wokeness is actually really inoffensive here. The original story is irrationally monocultural despite being on an international scale. Everyone who gets anything done at all is Chinese aside from Wade, and Wade's generally portrayed as a villain in their narrative. They never linger very long on pushing diversity, they just kind of throw it in. The worst problem about the diversity in this show is just that it's hypocritical because they clearly just did it to say that they did, but compared to 90% of Netflix representations, it barely matters.

The problem is just that the show isn't really all that good, introduces plot holes that don't exist in the original book, and makes some silly changes like the whole handling of the Oxford 5. It still wouldn't be a good adaptation if everyone stayed Chinese aside from the two white guys and what they're going to do in a couple months if it underperforms is make claims that people only didn't give it a fair chance because they're right-wing bigots.

This despite the fact that most of the complaints are coming from westerners who made the active choice to immerse themselves in fricking Chinese literature in the first place.

        >The original story is irrationally monocultural despite being on an international scale.
Who gives a shit? That happens all the time in American media.

The triosolarians are the US, the sophons are Japan and South Korea, China is China

      It’s the main one.

In the book Luo Ji was only made a wallfacer because the ETO had been told to assassinate him as maximum priority, meaning he was the only guy confirmed to be a threat to Trisolaris even if nobody had any idea why (the reason was that Ye Wenjie had told him about the basic principles of cosmic sociology)
The show does the same thing but in metaphor instead, which the San Ti aren't supposed to understand very well.

Eh. Depends. The book trilogy isn't that interesting in terms of a narrative and more presenting ideas (and the characters are really flat). It reminds me a lot of Isaac Isimov's Foundation series.

The characters? The "improved" part of the book trilogy are fairly stock regarding modern day "acceptable archetypes/stereotypes".

To be honest, I thought the Trisolarans are one of the dumbest alien races ever conceived and the Dark Forest theory has so many problems to it.

The point in book 2 where things really started clicking for me as a story about an interstellar-scale war was when the general told the NASA dudes to point their most powerful space telescope at Trisolaris to take pictures, which only showed them a blurry smear of Alpha Centauri, but they managed to infer the interstellar fleet's existence, speed and numbers using cosmic dust trails in the photos. Using deepfake as shorthand for visual manipulation.
If deepfake for us is simply an edited video, and other life are more advanced than us, than the their form of an edited video could seem real and projected onto reality and us think it's real, not unlike how people movies were real when they first appeared.
It's very weird you have a problem with the word deepfake being used despite the fact you know exactly what he meant by it.

It’s like Dunc. It’s an adequate adaptation but the first four episodes should have been 10. So I “get” the characters but the mystery of them coincides with learning to care about them so it falls flat. The mystery is revealed as the character arc ends and there’s no chance to relish the character. Although the characters do make sense and aren’t unreasonably shitty.

They apparently took elements from the third book to flavor the ending of the first book so there was more momentum to the story.
The first book is kind of a science mystery and the second is more of a star thriller.
They try to get some of the thriller elements in.

In other words I wish the whole season was the last three episodes in terms of thriller shit.
And they’ll struggle to adapt the books well.

The whole franchise needs to do what the books didn’t and be more of a thriller that lasts longer.

The show feels good toward the end but knowing where the plot is going it’s sort of pathetic

Seeing as the books get longer and longer with each one, I reckon it's good they put in some of book two and three in the first season, that way they can have season two start off quick with a lot of the element having alreadybeen introduced without losing too much steam.

Grad students and weed is a thing now. Don’t worry the west won’t fund science anymore after the dollar collapses

Can anyone who's watched both say whether the Chinese or American version is better? I'm cool with watching the Chinese version if it's better, only thing I've heard is that it's kinda slow at times.

Chink version follows the books practically word for word, omits stuff about the cultural revolution because China. Netflix version butchers the books, includes cultural revolution, but botched it

Watch the Chinese version, the Netflix version is trash. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a fricking midwit with shit taste.

Oh come on. All that shit with the spell, the bunker, the bubbles, dual vector foil. Deaths End is an insane book but I agree Dark Forest is the best

Am i schizo, why is everyone saying book 2 is the best part? It was the weakest part for me, with the meandering to a totally predictable conclusion.

If you already knew, then yeah the book isn't all that great, but if you only realized the bleak reality at the last explanation then it's very kino. I also already understood the concept and thus felt disappointed.

          >It was the weakest part for me
If all you care about is being mindblown about some twist...
It was not about the conclusion, it's about the path and the discussions along the way.
Frick its like you're one of those morons that thinks this shitflix show is a good adaptation because "it had all the plot points" as if the big setpiece moments had any meaning without all the threads that tie them together.

The book is great and they butchered it. Do yourself a favour, swerve the tv show and just listen to the audiobooks for free online. They have a cool anime vibe

wish they had time to go more in depth with the trisolaran history shenanigans tbh, I would have liked to see shit like the renaissancecore mechanical celestial model or the part where the Trisolarans accidentally disturbed some higher dimension cosmic being while unfolding a proton and then nuked it. Idk why they decided to rush to cover the first part of book 2 when that could have been saved for a second season.

I binge watched the first 20 minutes of episode 1. This show sucks ass but Auggie Delaminguez is actually pretty cute and has big DSLs.

I just marathoned it (read all 3 books).

Its shit, the Chinese setting was the whole point and soul of the book, also Shi Qiang was fricking ruined, overall you hear mean spirited woke shit every 10 minutes or so even though they whitified and westernized the setting, its completely schizophrenic and misses the point of the book.

Just read/listen to the book, the character dynamics are miles miles better.

I like how Netflix brought all the characters together. But the Cheng Xin stand-in is way too b***hy + ugly. Part 3 is a romance between a cute girl and simp, just can't imagine anyone liking her.

I can list off a dozen woke schlock netflix B-series that for all their faults are at least entertaining and not a total snoozefest like this show.

Yes, he is a stand in for Yun Tianming, who appears in Deaths End. I believe he will be there at the end of the series

He's the co-protag of the 3rd book. Everything that happens in the 3rd book is because of him.

      >At least the Panama scene was kino.
It was stolen from the 1968 book "Stand of Zanzibar" in which terrorists slice up a ship full of troops in the same way with nanofibers.
