There's a difference from being willing to have sex with her if she somehow magically appeared naked in your bed, and thinking she's properly cast for the role of "the most beautiful women in the entire universe (not, not just a planet, or a solar system, or a galaxy) who has been genetically modified and prepared for a hundred generations to be the epitome of female beauty".

          Wait, lemme get this straight..
          >the Baron and Emperor (illegally) conspire to lure the Atreides on Arrakis to then destroy them in a sneak attack. Because 1) the Harkonnens have a blood feud. 2) the Emperor dislikes Leto "ruling from the heart". 3) the Bene Gesserit dislike the Atreides' dangerous defiance.

          >Then later, the Baron was going to blackmail the Emperor for his role in this conspiracy, forcing him to marry his daughter to Feyd.

          >But then Paul sends a signed and sealed letter declaring... something(?) which makes the Emperor come to Arrakis to fight him.

          >When Baron sees the Emperor arriving, he immediately sends out messages to the other great houses, declaring that he is under attack from the Emperor (he's not), and they all need to band together against the throne.

          >The great houses show up just in time to see the Emperor's forces get defeated by Paul Atreides, who presumably explains "his side of the story", up to and including his win conditions (legitimate marriage to Irulan and the assumption of the Imperial throbe, the destruction of the Harkonnens, all with Spice production as collateral).

          >great houses reject Paul's claim, so Paul launches his fremen jihad against them.

          Questions:
          1) What did Paul say in his message to the Emperor?
          2) Why did the Bene Gesserit make the Baron promise to spare Jessica and Paul, but then later they said they actually wanted to eliminate their bloodline?
          3) If the great House's showed up to Arrakis because they were worried that the Emperor was directly attacking one of their peers (the Harkonnen), only to then find out the Emperor had already attacked one of their peers (the Atreides), who managed to survive and had just defeated the Emperor, then why would these Great Houses reject Paul's victory conditions?

            >What did Paul say in his message to the Emperor?
"I'm alive and know what you did, come to Arrakis or I'll tell the Great Houses you attacked us."
            >Why did the Bene Gesserit make the Baron promise to spare Jessica and Paul, but then later they said they actually wanted to eliminate their bloodline?
I've been scratching my head about that too, but I think they wanted to see Paul survive a trial by fire and become the messiah of Arrakis to prove he's the One. Either that or Mohiam used reverse psychology to have Vlad make sure to kill them now since she told them not to. Or Denis fricked that one up.
            >If the great House's showed up to Arrakis because they were worried that the Emperor was directly attacking one of their peers (the Harkonnen), only to then find out the Emperor had already attacked one of their peers (the Atreides), who managed to survive and had just defeated the Emperor, then why would these Great Houses reject Paul's victory conditions?
Because he's ascending to the Emperorship himself, marrying Irulan and basically claiming the spice for himself. The Atriedes coming out of nowhere and claiming the throne for themselves after already being a big threat to the other Great Houses would always lead to open revolt.

Also he just used atomics going against the great convention. In other words, the other houses would've had to accept a recent war criminal ascending to the imperial throne.

A "war criminal" doesn't mean shit when it's the heir of the Great House that's been eliminated in secrecy with the direct help of the Emperor himself. All rules are already off at this point.

Shaddam is losing the throne no matter what, Mohiam said that herself, but the Great Houses aren't just going to accept a random Atreides showing up and demanding the throne for himself on threat of nuking the spice fields.

                >but the Great Houses aren't just going to accept a random Atreides showing up and demanding the throne
But why? It's not like he's some random schmuck either. Didn't the Emperor obliterated the House Atreides exactly because they've been becoming more and more popular with the Houses? And the Emperor himself is weak and his House is on the way out already.

                Anonymous

Because putting aside the fact that no Great House ever wants another House to become more powerful than them, let alone take the seat of the Emperor, Paul is emerging from the desert as a religious leader at the head of an army of millions of Fremen fanatics that just eliminated the Sardaukar, and threatened to nuke the spice in the process. He's a huge threat and the other Great Houses have had an implicit understanding with the Corrino emperors for 10,000 years. They have no idea what this incredibly powerful leader of a fanatical army will do.

                Still not convinced.
                >He's a huge threat and the other Great Houses have had an implicit understanding with the Corrino emperors for 10,000 years.
Yeah, until they didn't in the example of Atreides. Let's imagine they go to war against him and they win? Who becomes the Emperor then? It's not the solution, just delaying the problem. But I guess feudalism is moronic that way, even 10000 years on the future.

                Anonymous

Yeah, welcome to feudalism. Not even feudalism, just civil wars in general. A weak ruler is overthrown, someone else is the claimant, and things descend into chaos with everyone dreaming they have a shot at power. Either way, Paul and his Fremen represent a very real threat to the Great Houses. They just annihilated the Sardaukar.

                >Either way, Paul and his Fremen represent a very real threat to the Great Houses. They just annihilated the Sardaukar.
Well, the situation is constructed in such a way that requires them to be moronic for the story to continue. Paul has united and claimed Arrakis, and with it - the spice. They can't win, not without destroying the spice completely in the process. Would they resort to that? Who knows, people are people.

                Anonymous

Paul isn't going to destroy the spice and the Great Houses know he won't, the nuke threat was a bluff, as Feyd pointed out. Blowing up the spice prevents space travel.

                Anonymous

That's not the point though. They can't win against the united Fremen on their home turf, no matter what pretty much, safe for nuking the planet. So it's a stalemate. They need spice, but they aren't going to get it at that point. And space travel isn't impossible without spice, just much more dangerous.

                Anonymous

Well, yes, Paul has a major advantage by controlling the planet where spice is found. That's really just another reason the Great Houses have to fear him and work against him. An emperor with a fanatical army and control of spice basically has total control.

They might accept Paul and his ascension by force if he makes them, but it leads to even more unrest and strife. The harsher and harsher conditions you force on the great houses the more it will rankle them in the long run and more likely they are to undermine your rule and use subterfuge and scheming to try and get back at you. If he takes Shaddam's daughter as a bride it gives him some legitimacy and helps assure the other great houses that Paul and the new regime are still trying to work within the confinements of the old system somewhat instead of tossing all the rules out the window and just doing what they please because they can.

I can see your points. The other great houses were probably hoping to show up, overwhelm the Emperor themselves, and then make him submit to their terms, Magna Carta - style. Arriving just in time to see someone else take all the power and glory for themselves was not the outcome they wanted.

              Anonymous

Well, it's not just that, he's also making a point to Paul that he's doing exactly what the emperor did to gain power. Like Paul said "we'll be Harkonnens to survive." So Paul is proving the emperor's point correct.

                Anonymous

At the end, Paul is supposed to be a synthesis of the Atreides, Harkonnen, and Corino doctrines of control.
                >Atreides: cults of personality. Paul embodies the persona of the messiah for the fremen..
                >Harkonnen: addiction. Paul uses the Guild's and the imperium's addiction to the Spice to secure their loyalty.
                >Corino: martial power: Paul uses the threat of annihilation via his jihad to bully the other great houses into accepting his rule. His fedyakin are the new Sardaukar.

The better question would be - why the frick would anyone believe anything the Baron would say? The Harkonnens are cartoonishly evil, beyond even that. No one is their right mind would trust a word they say and would immediately think how that can be used against themselves, or anyone other than Harkonnens. It's moronic either way.

              Anonymous

Whether the Baron is a mustache twirling villain or not, none of the Great Houses can risk Arrakis coming under attack. It's THE source of spice, and if you don't have spice, you can't travel through space.

There's not much of a communication between planets, aside for super expensive highliner travels so not much to learn about tyrannical rule in another system. Other houses are not saint either and even Atridies consider barons methods as valid alternative for their populism. This is a degenerated Universe with small populations of impoverished serfs and disconnected aristocracy.
