I get the sense that Brevoort didn't really plan how to move things forward in a semi decent way and that he was also rushed perhaps by Cebulski or someone higher up with studio ties. Current writers have hinted all the Fall of X stuff was supposed to run at least another half a year from where we're stopping.
Before Jordan got fired and Brevoort took his spot,Jordan was already promoting the post-Krakoa line. So they probably didn't change much for Fall of X.

And Marvel doesn't have many big writers who haven't done x men already. Mackay and Cates are the biggest left. Ewing wrote his Storm solo and Hickman started and didn't finish. Gillen did Immortal and nobody wants Aaron after he shit the bed on Avengers. Surprised they didn't offer Kelly Sue DeConnick or Kelly Thompson money to come back. They're gonna try to build Camp with Ultimates and North is on FF4.

His Avengers is decent but leaves a lot to be desired. I mostly read it because Wanda is in it. I feel it bounces from 4 issue action scene to 4 issue action scene with very little of the character writing that he does in Moon Knight and Doctor Strange. He may be a writer who does better solo work than teams. But I like his writing. He's not mind blowing but it's comfy, reliably decent storytelling which is better than a good 90% of Marvel. Right now I think he is the most consistent, above average writer. Ewing at his best is much better but hit or miss, Hickman is better but colder, Zdarsky is very good most of the time (only ever read his Daredevil and now Avengers Twilight), I'm also enjoying North's FF4 about as much as I like Mackay's Doctor Strange. So we will see. I trust him more than most Marvel writers these days.
I think Mackay's biggest challenge will be a mix of struggling with team writing and this being post Krakoa which doesn't look exciting. What little we've seen looks as if it could fit into any x book between 2006 to 2017.

The only X-Men toys that seem to sell anymore are the Jim Lee costumes, and the new cartoon toys don't seem to be doing so well, maybe they've finally milked that cow dry.
With the comics, Marvel know X-books sold well for them in the 80s and 90s so they think this will work forever, they can't wake up and accept the reality that they're publishing 3 times as many X-books as actually sell decently well.
