I always thought it was meant to be another contrast between the Harkonnens and the Atreides. The Harkonnens are crippled because they intentionally hire/promote flawed individuals, and rule by fear, which turns people into yes-men and makes them less efficient: Rabban being an example. The Atreides would have listened to Rabban and given the idea some thought, realizing that an idea stands apart from the mouth it came from.

I just rewatched the first and I actually liked this especially knowing the consequences. He had just killed three and the other three fled. These are not smart or honorable men. I also felt like the Baron had a poison needle on his finger and could have killed Paul even with the knife in his neck but did not out of something resembling love. Yet this does not redeem him. In the first moments of that scene, I am thought for sure it was happening in a Spacing Guild ship, and they were setting up a plot thread about how the Guild actually DID have satellites over arrakis, and monitored/dealt with the Fremen on the side, while denying the ruling House's the same capabilities. Such a plot point is necessary to explain the Guild's flip to Paul at the end, as they knew for a fact that he wasn't bluffing when he claimed to have Fremen standing by to destroy the spice cycle.

Yes they were. They even explicitly say some of them were better. And the Emperor knew it, which was the whole motivation for targeting the Atreides. If Leto had taken his entire military and attacked the Imperial Palace on Kaitan then he could have deposed Shaddam because the Sardaukar were spread thin and had gone soft. Leto had no such plans but Shaddam simply could not accept the possibility existed at all and was bitterly jealous that had Leto tried, the Great House's would have fully supported him as Emperor. The Atreides instead simply got overwhelmed by sheer Harkonnen and Sardaukar numbers, treachery, technological wunderwaffens (the artillery in an age of shields) that prevents them from fighting at all. There wasn't anything resembling a fair fight between the Atreides and the Sardaukar at all, which was the point. The Emperor was so paranoid about Sardaukar losing in a fair fight against the Atreides that he stacked the deck against them to an absurd degree.

No one was, due to the Sardaukar having the advantage of being trained in planets where every day is a fight for survival.
That being said, the Atreides had some of the best trainers and warriors you could ask for: anyone trained by Thufir Hawat is already at the top 1%, and Duncan Idaho could have probably 1v1 anyone.

The Atreides had Duncan and Gurney training their house troops. Duncan and Gurney are like Chinese wuxia protagonists insofar as they're the bestest fighters to ever fight, which means people trained by them are also pretty good fighters.
House Corrino (the imperial house) has a prison planet, Salusa Secundus, where they train Sardukar. But Corrino- and the Sardukar- haven't actually had to fight anything in ages, so even if the fresh troops out of Salusa are still Genghis Khan motherfrickers, their commanders and veterans are not.
Arrakis/Dune is Salusa Secundus on steroids. Outside of the northern city and outlaying villages, the quality of life is worse than a prison planet. Fremen struggle to survive from birth. They also get spice-juiced from birth, which is why they're so easily adaptable to the Bene Gessirit Witching Way (I'll get to that next). Still, they're not a formal military force, and an organized Sardukar assault could likely match them pre-Paul.
However, what Paul does is introduce Atreides training from Duncan-Gurney techniques AND the Bene Gessirit Witching Way into Fremen fighting styles, which allows even women and children to take down Sardukar.
House Corrino doesn't suck wiener at fighting. It's just that nobody else can even compare to the millions of zealot spice-warriors the Atreides gain on Dune. It's why the Jihad is such a one-sided slaughter of trillions of lives. Remember, this is a melee-focused combat setting; one skilled warrior can account for tens, if not hundreds, of enemies.

Count Fenring comes to Geidi Prime to talk with the Baron and at one point the latter mentions he had an idea to solve his personnel problem on Arrakis and get rid of the Fremen by turning it into prison planet, inspired by the Emperor with Selusa Secundus. The tone of the conversation immediately changed and the Baron isn't sure what exactly happened.
My reading is that Herbert changed the way the Baron is portrayed depending on who he's with. Cunning and in control with Feyd, stupid and gluttonous with Thufir, vicious and intimidating with Rabbani, small and insignificant with the Emperor. You do that with characters but Herbert pushed it to greater degree with the Baron.

the lynch dune gets more right in the aesthetics but has some pretty big divergences from the plot. However DUNC also makes some huge divergences in how characters act, their motivations, and the overall plot as well.
the scifi series is the most accurate overall but the production values are lower for obvious reasons and its more boringer and shit. Frank was only alive for lynch Dune and he liked it aesthetically. Most people who actually read Dune liked it and recognize that the big divergences like the weirding module were done for a reason, because it would be very difficult to film melee combat with the weirding way as described in the books. It actually would work in the modern media environment where *teleports behind u* is an established, valid martial arts move.

See that's the thing. Lynch leaned into the crazy aesthetics of Dune. Denis literally brought in his own aesthetics, and bent Dune to it. Blade Runner 2049 also ignores Blade Runners aesthetics, and instead Denis does his thing. He basically has one vision for Sci-fi, and when he makes a new sci-fi adaptation, he will most likely use the same aesthetics.

I just rewatched the first and I actually liked this especially knowing the consequences. He had just killed three and the other three fled. These are not smart or honorable men. I like the stupidity in them as characters. I also felt like the Baron had a poison needle on his finger and could have killed Paul even with the knife in his neck but did not out of something resembling love. Yet this does not redeem him. More of a selfish boomer vicarious love where he will at least know in passing his bloodline will maintain power

Are you talking about the device on his finger? That's his shield. You can see him activate it when he approached Leto in Dune 1. He didn't have any inkling he was related to Paul until Alia called him grandfather just before he died.

In the first moments of that scene, I am thought for sure it was happening in a Spacing Guild ship, and they were setting up a plot thread about how the Guild actually DID have satellites over arrakis, and monitored/dealt with the Fremen on the side, while denying the ruling House's the same capabilities. Such a plot point is necessary to explain the Guild's flip to Paul at the end, as they knew for a fact that he wasn't bluffing when he claimed to have Fremen standing by to destroy the spice cycle.

The guild also has a total monopoly on the launch and maintenance of satellites. anything past transorbital flights to their heighliners is something they have a complete monopoly over, and one that they guard jealously
The Sardaukar get Worfed hard. Ackshually they're good enough to fight Harkonnens (who are representative of the other Houses' military might) at massively outnumbered odds and WIN. Even for all the dicksucking the "elite" Atreides get, they're still not fully 1:1 as good as Sardaukar.
But this is kind of lost in portrayal because the Fremen are an order of magnitude above the Sardaukar.

Yes they were. They even explicitly say some of them were better. And the Emperor knew it, which was the whole motivation for targeting the Atreides. If Leto had taken his entire military and attacked the Imperial Palace on Kaitan then he could have deposed Shaddam because the Sardaukar were spread thin and had gone soft. Leto had no such plans but Shaddam simply could not accept the possibility existed at all and was bitterly jealous that had Leto tried, the Great House's would have fully supported him as Emperor. The Atreides instead simply got overwhelmed by sheer Harkonnen and Sardaukar numbers, treachery, technological wunderwaffens (the artillery in an age of shields) that prevents them from fighting at all. There wasn't anything resembling a fair fight between the Atreides and the Sardaukar at all, which was the point. The Emperor was so paranoid about Sardaukar losing in a fair fight against the Atreides that he stacked the deck against them to an absurd degree.
It's funny because if the Emperor wasn't such a moron he would've just wed Irulan and Paulo resolving the entire crisis. Atreides were a good choices.
royal families traditionally did not marry individuals from big power players in their own realm precisely to avoid power imbalances. essentially, they'd go look for neighboring royals if possible. in this case it would result in house corrino being replaced by house atreides.

the guild would never have allowed this. they have a TOTAL monopoly on interplanetary travel and decide who goes where and when
No one was, due to the Sardaukar having the advantage of being trained in planets where every day is a fight for survival.
That being said, the Atreides had some of the best trainers and warriors you could ask for: anyone trained by Thufir Hawat is already at the top 1%, and Duncan Idaho could have probably 1v1 anyone.

Alright I'll spell this out for you since you might be asking a genuine question and not just baiting bookgays.
The Atreides had Duncan and Gurney training their house troops. Duncan and Gurney are like Chinese wuxia protagonists insofar as they're the bestest fighters to ever fight, which means people trained by them are also pretty good fighters.
House Corrino (the imperial house) has a prison planet, Salusa Secundus, where they train Sardukar. But Corrino- and the Sardukar- haven't actually had to fight anything in ages, so even if the fresh troops out of Salusa are still Genghis Khan motherfrickers, their commanders and veterans are not.
Arrakis/Dune is Salusa Secundus on steroids. Outside of the northern city and outlaying villages, the quality of life is worse than a prison planet. Fremen struggle to survive from birth. They also get spice-juiced from birth, which is why they're so easily adaptable to the Bene Gessirit Witching Way (I'll get to that next). Still, they're not a formal military force, and an organized Sardukar assault could likely match them pre-Paul.
However, what Paul does is introduce Atreides training from Duncan-Gurney techniques AND the Bene Gessirit Witching Way into Fremen fighting styles, which allows even women and children to take down Sardukar.
House Corrino doesn't suck wiener at fighting. It's just that nobody else can even compare to the millions of zealot spice-warriors the Atreides gain on Dune. It's why the Jihad is such a one-sided slaughter of trillions of lives. Remember, this is a melee-focused combat setting; one skilled warrior can account for tens, if not hundreds, of enemies.

It's a shame the movies didn't touch Barons motivations for being nasty. He was very smart (being only a few generations from the birth of Kwizats Haderach) and Bene Gesserit had tried to assasinate him making him crippled. I honestly don't remember that from the book at all.
It's when Feyd kills the undrugged gladiator. Count Fenring comes to Geidi Prime to talk with the Baron and at one point the latter mentions he had an idea to solve his personnel problem on Arrakis and get rid of the Fremen by turning it into prison planet, inspired by the Emperor with Selusa Secundus. The tone of the conversation immediately changed and the Baron isn't sure what exactly happened.
My reading is that Herbert changed the way the Baron is portrayed depending on who he's with. Cunning and in control with Feyd, stupid and gluttonous with Thufir, vicious and intimidating with Rabbani, small and insignificant with the Emperor. You do that with characters but Herbert pushed it to greater degree with the Baron.
