This is literally what he's doing. That's the cheat code to avoiding cancellation - you acknowledge nothing, lie low for months, then come back like nothing had happened. The people who have been turned by the initial drama aren't coming back anyways so why bother acknowledge them. The people on the fence of the drama only serve to be alienated by any defense you make. Your fans are your fans, and there's still a great crop of npc normies who aren't troony enough to even fall into hbomberguy's algorithm influence

I don't know why you wouldn't just come out and unequivocally say "It was a mistake, it was just those few images, and I fully assumed they were adult characters, I'm not remotely into e-girl and I don't have any other images like that" just to clear the air. The horse thing is fricked up but there are other online personalities like YMS who get away with it so it can't be career-breaking.
It's too late to go down the "I'm not dignifying this with a response" route. Everyone's already talking about it and the longer he leaves it the longer it'll take for him to turn people round.

That's not how cancellation works. No one's ever gotten off by downplaying what they did. Whether they get a time out or a termination is a function of how big they are and how illegal the deed. Idk if anyone has gone down for e-girl but US law is pretty unambiguous about it. Pornography depicting minors is illegal, doesn't matter if real or not.

Best part was when he defended it

              >Pornography depicting minors is illegal, doesn't matter if real or not.
It is an important distinction. It means the difference between a fine or prison.
It is slowly changing however to make cartoons more punishable, however it has thr knock on effect of needing to have low sentences to highlight it isn't real stuff or you then need to begin to increase real sentences.

It’s not. That’s probably when his YouTubing career jumped the shark. His other content was great because he’s just repeating facts like a historian. The stupid ass raid segment wasn’t facts, it was stupid entertainment trying to be funny. And it went on for way too long. The internet is built upon information being shared, repackaged, copied. That is literally what a meme is. To try and police it with moral grandstanding is useless because ultimately, people take the primary benefits of the video they're watching being entertaining over some arbitrary moral obligation to only credit original authors. So one single person cares about the Internet historian video? Its not plagiarism. Its a news story and he put his own spin on the telling of the story.

Yeah, if you copy pasted the Lord of the Rings and changed a few names around you'd be plagiarizing. Or if you submitted an original pitch or novel to an editor and they published it claiming authorship.

Even assuming every single thing in the IH video was copied, the transformative nature of the video itself takes work. So even if it was copied 1:1 from the article and put in to video form with voices, animations, msuic. If someone animated, voiced, scored and did the art for a full 1:1 copy of the lord of the rings it would not be plagiarizing because translating it from text to screen takes a lot of work and changes the way the story is digested. There are literally videos of people reading LOTR word for word on youtube already.

the article is taken from a non-fiction event with eyewitness testimony that must be repeated in order for the events to be told accurately. There is no plagiarism because there is no "work" done beyond the collection and presentation of information. Its like saying that newspapers are all plagiarizing each other by reporting on the same story with the same snippets of interview.

Collecting and presenting information is work. Newspapers would get in shit for copy/pasting the same article from somewhere else. You fanboys are making yourselves look extremely stupid by saying this stuff

If the president was hit by a car at 120mph and it was in the newspaper tomorrow. How varied do you think the newspaper clips would be in their description of the event? It was an objective event that happened in a certain way. There is bound to be a lot of overlap in describing it. Especially when you bring interviews and singular primary source to the mix.

I'm on the camp of the people who agree that he plagiarized. However, the animation and voice over are significant contributions to the original script. If the article had been freely available and not tied to copyright, such is the case with Cinemaphile greentexts or creepypasta then it would have been perfectly fine. All he had to do was acknowledge his source and the fact that he was working off that script. It's the "lie by omission" that caused this whole mess.

This. Anyone who’s taken a college English class knows that citing your sources is the difference between plagiarism and an A+ paper. I’ve literally padded out my papers by quoting word for word 3-4 sentences then expanding on it before I move on the next string of quotes and expanding on them. It’s a cheap and easy way to pad out the length of your paper and your professors will fricking love you for being able to cite your sources correctly like it’s some kind of Herculean task that the other morons in your class can’t seem to comprehend.

Exactly. They love that shit. It makes you look well read and like you investigated a lot. Ironically my best papers contained very little in the way of direct quotes, but still, it's a viable tactic and it falls in the "contribution" category.

not really 1:1 though because the article that IH plagarized was non-fiction (ie an event with objective details that can only be described in X amount of ways if wanted to be accurate) and was based on/included eye-witness interview transcripts which pretty much have to be copied word for word if you want to be accurate.

Still falls under plagiarism. Not copying the entire thing only means you plagiarized less than if you did, but you still plagiarized. Even copying a paragraph without citing it and passing it off as your own is considered plagiarism. It's not like when you use a very common sentence, you have plausible deniability there.

except this isnt actually what IH did. He used some of the same phrases and descriptions used in the article, but the video is in no way a 1:1 copy of the article. the transcripts or eyewitness accounts are identical, but they have to be. IH uses jokes, descriptions, structure that arent in the original article.

Transcripting eye witnesses is fine, obviously. Those are quotations, they need to be cited to prove you are not making it up, but direct quotation is fine. The problem stems from the narration, which does copy literally from the article instead of simply using it as a framing devise or as a structural guide (which would be kind of weak but not plagiarism).

There is still an understanding that he didn't write it. Most video essayist write their own essays, which makes it implicit that every video that doesn't credit a source is written by the user who uploaded it. All he had to do was to post a link to the original article, perhaps even getting in touch with the author or the holders of the rights to the article to ask for permission for a dramatization.

His HWNDU series was great. Gamergate was so long ago that I don't think it's radioactive to make a video presenting the real story, either. The blowback against Gamergate was the media trying to stomp out an insurrection against one of its less vital tentacles. Then Trump happened and half the country turned on the media. They have so many bigger fires to put out that someone talking about Gamergate without the state approved talking points isn't something they have time to focus on.

Don't forget they are all pirating video games and TV and pissed off that YouTube isn't free.

Maybe its because I pirate things from the grocery store that this IH drama doesn't seem like a big deal.

you already look moronic right there. see

The internet is built upon information being shared, repackaged, copied. That is literally what a meme is. To try and police it with moral grandstanding is useless because ultimately, people take the primary benefits of the video they're watching being entertaining over some arbitrary moral obligation to only credit original authors. Basically Hbomberguy is a brainlet that doesnt understand the internet or content machines.

Didn't he re-release the cave video with the proper citations? I mean he went about it the right way, fixed the video, said sorry and moved on I guess. Same with James Rolfe, he said he was sorry, made some amends to the issue and moved on. That other (James?) fella only got fricked as hard as he did because he was a SERIAL plagarist and did a shitty apology for it. At least the former two generally did good content and conducted themselves fairly well.

Yes. The company who first claimed his videos could still claim the video and probably defend it in court. They just don't because obviously there's been behind the scenes discussions. They're not offended they were copied, just that they didn't get any money from it.

The real problem for IH isn’t the plagiarism allegations. It’s that he set the standards for his main channel video too high with the Concordia video and now he’s too lazy to try to match the quality with his new videos. I bet it’s the same shit GRRM is going through and why he won’t finish his damn books, just distracting himself with side stories like the Dunk and Egg thing. IH is doing the same shit with Ingonito Mode and his other side channels. They probably have avoidant personality disorder. I should know because I do the exact same shit.

What did PhilosophyTube do to Contrapoints?

        Anonymous

not that anon, but there's a strong persistent rumour that pre-trooning PhilosophyTube came on to ContraPoints inappropriately at a con (some stories saying he groped her). I don't think there's any hard evidence for it, but it does seem to align with everyone in that community - who used to be quite friendly with PhilosophyTube, visit him and do collab videos with him - very suddenly cutting him off and now they don't acknowledge his existence. Also ContraPoints said she could easily metoo a fairly popular leftist content creator if she wanted, and on a stream someone asked her about PhilosophyTroon and ContraPoints said something very cold like "that person is no longer a part of my life".

The way I understand the lore, Philosophy tube wanted to frick Contra points and before he trooned out he pushed his luck with contra and got rejected. Then after Philosophy Tube trooned out he started very clearly aping Contra's aesthetic down to the dressup and homosexual lighting as well as constantly retweeting contras to the point people started joking about how he wanted to skinwalk him

Then hontrapoints started tweeting about being creeped on and sexually assaulted by a very big name in the "breadtube" community. Never mentions the other troony but people put two and two together as it was tweeted just after they met face to face.

His fans literally never stop lying, they said at one point he got permission from the original author of the article, then they said it was fair use even though that literally isn’t what fair use is, then they said he “worked it out” with the original author who copyright striked him because he took down his video and uploaded a new one. Somehow, getting caught stealing, being told to stop and never do it again is “working it out” with whoever you stole from. There is no evidence that he, for example, gave the author any ad revenue he received, and he never issued any formal apology or anything. There are no emails or archived messages suggesting he ever got in contact with the original author, both before or after the copyright strike, or that they ever “worked out” anything and to this day no one can provide ANY receipts. He got caught stealing, was threatened with legal action if he didn’t stopped, so he stopped, that isn’t “working out” anything

'some issues with copyright' which can be interpreted in a million different ways seeing as how youtube throws those out if you feature even a recording of someone humming certain songs for a few seconds

Theft is theft, no matter who does. Your pet content creator lied to you, it happens. Be thankful it was only on one video and not 80% of their content output like the rest of the morons featured in hbombs video
