Shut the frick up Bill, if you merchandised your characters, you could have been set for life.
DC and Marvel make shit tons of money.

People go back and forth with this sentiment. Like, Cinemaphile loves to share some of the stupidest fricking moments in the industry, but those are usually capeshit, which as the name implies, is usually the junk food of comic books. Watterson was right... if by "comics" he meant "Marvel and DC" which generally shit out some of the worst stories this medium has to offer.
Might I add that although there's some terrible non capeshit stuff out there, capeshit writers are also some of the pettiest motherfrickers in the business who behave like literal children. It is boring here, which is probably why famous people move here, just so they can get away from the "excitement" of the rest of the country. It's also somewhat of a red state, so you know the bullshit of the west coast doesn't have as much of a reach here.

        >Frank Miller: If you want to see what comics can do and learn how to do it, the answer is Calvin & Hobbes. The drawing is such a joy.
        >Paste Magazine: Yes, what can you get only in comics?
        >Miller: Calvin and Hobbes. [Laughs]. I only pick that because Bill Watterson’s drawings are so beautiful and magical, it’s hard to imagine it being animated successfully.

        from "Exploring Calving and Hobbes"
        >And I guess there were a couple of years in the late 80s when I noticed some comic books. I was not plugged into that world at all, but I saw Frank Miller's Dark Knight version of Batman, which was the first comic book I'd read in more than a decade. That kind of violent bleakness is not to my taste at all, but it was an eye-opener in its reinvention of the character.
        >I also remember paying attention to a few comic books illustrated by Bill Sienkiewicz that came out about then. Long before Photoshop, he painted and collaged and photocopied the artwork - all sorts of techniques I never would have thought of applying to cartoons. At bottom, they were still rooted in a superhero sensibility that did nothing for me, but his approach to materials was inventive. So I wouldn't say comic books had any real influence on me, but I was noticing that these were lavishly printed and that comic books were opening up in the sophistication of their writing and art. It made me wonder why that wasn't happening with comic strips.

Watterson dislikes the humor philosophy of Mad Magazine, although he's expressed admiration for some of the contributing artists. I can't remember if he specifically mentioned Harvey Kurtzman, but I have a hard time imagining Watterson would have a problem with the Kurtzman's EC war comics (the comments about Mad that I'm vaguely recalling are from Exploring Calvin and Hobbes, if you want to look them up). Otherwise, you're probably right that he'd be dismissive of EC's sci-fi and horror work, as well as most of the other old war comics.

I think he's a bit pretentious with his actual comics but he's not wrong about this. Most comics with a focus on violence are still fricking dumb regardless of what point they attempt to make.

I love them both and really want to see Watterson and Moore in a pretentious-off.

I don't see how a comic book is significantly different than newspaper strips
Admittedly the peak Newspaper strip artists are far above comic book creators but thats mostly because there is better money in newspaper strips

I think they're about the same.

Pretty sure it's from the 10th anniversary book in relation to this strip parodying 80s and 90s edge.

I've always liked how when Bill is doing a different style that you can still tell it's him. You can clearly tell he's trying to imitate Frank Miller here but it's still very obviously Bill.

I wish Watterson drew a comic book. His latest book was enormously disappointing, largely because he didn't do much of the art.

I like that he's always trying his hand at new things. Wish more old people were like him.

Nah, it's fricking hilarious. Watterson emerges from his cave for the first time in ages and its to do a collaboration he hardly works on. I'd almost believe he did it intentionally to frick with people.

It should also be noted that he gave a speech at a convention in the early 2000s and someone asked him about that quote and he reiterated that he just plain does not like comic books. He doesn't pretend that he's not biased.

    >Personally, I like paper and ink better than glowing pixels, but to each his own. Obviously the role of comics is changing very fast. On the one hand, I don't think comics have ever been more widely accepted or taken as seriously as they are now. On the other hand, the mass media is disintegrating, and audiences are atomizing. I suspect comics will have less widespread cultural impact and make a lot less money. I'm old enough to find all this unsettling, but the world moves on. All the new media will inevitably change the look, function, and maybe even the purpose of comics, but comics are vibrant and versatile, so I think they'll continue to find relevance one way or another. But they definitely won't be the same as what I grew up with.
