If you're an animator that has a dream of doing your own show taking a deal with a devil like Disney probably seems like a decent shot. Especially back when they first announced their own streaming platform and it seemed like they were gonna go all in on lots of original programming
yeah true, but in reality disney has the least animated series in actuality. So the reality is you are living a pipe dream at least nick and cn will pay you and work on it then cancel it. You even have a chance of actually keeping the rights. Also Matt is a massive outlier same with Dana most of those new creators had tons of backing or experience or were good about fitting the right narrative and dickriding to the top. It takes a lot of effort, and luck look at how TOH went and Amphibia because dana really couldn't keep her mouth shut and Matt was well liked because he knew how to kiss ass.
The best thing now is indie and trying to gofund yourself which is actually for the best. It at least it gives you more control and potential to keep your rights and more options.
Not since 2017 or so. Nick used to be the best go to place before they toned everything down and barely ever produce series now. CN is even worse, they dropped almost all productions years ago and only really make 3-4 shows a year, and almost never greenlight new series. Right now Disney is the only major studio taking pitches and producing 1-3 new series a year.
2004 or so Nick was the best place to take your concept, they were very likely to at least produce your pilot episode.

It's a weird concept that the fairy world doesn't age and basically paints fairies as ghost. It's interesting that Hilda technically part magical but at the same time doesn't change anything about Hilda. Hilda is Hilda, she charges head first into danger, being magical isn't the reason for that.
Also on a side note, I was under the theory that Hilda burth was a result of a love spell gone wrong between Johanna and the bell tower guy.

In the tie-in novel it actually is, apparently Hilda's blue hair and her carefree adventurous spirit are a result of her fairy genes
It's the folklore version of fairies that are mostly just magic humans or dead people living in some weird world that come along to the living world sometimes. so that helped it work out better. It would have been more annoying if they added in superpowers or something because of it.

I think they were both equally important, but even then Johanna is as much of the show’s protagonist as Hilda so I think it works well.
It’s funny because some of the shots and cinematography felt very “anime” influenced, but it still feels unique enough to stand out because it never uses any of the usual cliches or references.
The artstyle and, for lack of a better description, pastel-colouring also helps the show stand out from the usual Calarts shows.
Is it the one CalArts show we got that actually turned out fantastic?

They went out of their way to resolve everything in season 1 and so had to come up with new shit for season 2, but most of it wasn’t very good

A love interest is not an inherent problem. But Ollie and his family clearly should have been season-long antagonists, and the romance/reconciliation should have been the season finale. Instead there was no tease, there was barely conflict, no twist, or turns, no sense of discovery or triumph. There was very little of the things that actually make a good romance exciting. It came across as the hurried product of a fanfic writer who does not understand the value of delayed gratification.

Yep I just treated hilda like a guy, a guy that forgets they have people that care about them and bottles things up. I specifically brought up the time worm because she never tells anyone. An it seemed like it fricked her up hard remember when she tried to convince them to move and they just accepted dying and hilda at the end just accepted her punishment. I felt that messed with her. she has a lot of trauma she really brushes off with ha adventurer but we see in the giant slayer ep she's not really over it and not to mention all the times she's almost died.

The only advantage Molly has over Hilda is the animation and art style, which are great. However, good animation doesn't excuse a shitty script nor terrible writing. It's just eyecandy jingling keys by that point. Even Libby, who is better than every Hilda character, gets flanderized in S2.

There’s a few plot holes like that in the episode that aren’t resolved and/or forgotten entirely. E.g. Johanna blaming Anders for putting her and Hilda through the stuff in the fairy world, even though her parents were the ones to kidnap him and admit as such when they’re explaining why things are the way they are, and almost certainly saved his life from the troll.
If they did a Hilda game in the style of A Hat in Time or Spongebob: Battle for Bikini Bottom, I’d be content enough with that.

The original piece was way better and a masterpiece, it somehow accurately captured each character's show's art style and meshed them well with each other in the same picture.
The new one with Fionna is more uniform with author's art style so it isn't as good.
A dumb thought but Johanna's used car in S3 looks considerably newer than her old one yet it's in much worse shape both physically and mechanically, the previous owner must have abused the shit out of it and never did timely oil changes. Either that or it's just an American car.

We didn’t get a lot of Hilda/David moments this season, but this and him rescuing her in the finale showed how much the two cared for each other.

true, I think the best thing to do for the final season was really work on hilda and her mom and them reconciling and bonding more. Especially since most of S2 was about them drifting apart and it came to a head in the Mountain King.
I liked most of the characters and their development, I almost wish frida got a focused ep as what a few of said before a couple threads before the S3 dropped. Frida feels like she's both a character and not a character it's a very strange thing in reality.

Ha, really I could see it actually. I think the biggest flaw with the fairy god is it feels like it adds so much mystery as if it's a future antagonist or part of a group of potential antagonist.
I feel it also was made for hilda to fight as it embodies the dark side of nature while hilda embodies the light side.

I like that comparison between the two and absolutely love villains that NEED to control situations and outcomes despite the universe telling them that’s not the solution. In the Fairy God’s case, it was evident with the decay and corruption around it and was basically stated to its face by Astrid.
It would’ve fit the series if Hilda met the Fairy God and convinced it to let her go by befriending it, and convincing it that she truly doesn’t belong there despite being a fairy. Or maybe that’s more of a thing that Little Hilda would do than Older Hilda

And they had a chance to back out of this. The End wasn't originally the last episode of the season, they could've just had the one before it be the end and have the show end on the most 5/10 finale ever. But they really wanted this ending, so much they ordered an extra episode for it.

you may as well just merge the last two hilda seasons together, they are duds of similar excalibur, I was an avid watcher of both shows and I can say that Molly's second season clearly was suffering from budget factors out of the showrunner's control (which is strange because it was being created before the show even fricking aired so its not like you can blame low ratings), Hilda still had great budget and effects but it was lost in similarly mundane and tropish storytelling
