Most of season 1 contestants were Sam or Jet fans. I don't think it's entirely the cast's fault, they did suck sometimes but they were getting b***hed at by production for not being funny or making content while not being fed and dealing with everything else. Production constantly inserted themselves into shit then complained when a fish said "production told me". You could probably try not to cast complete nutcases like Summer or Jimmy, but what normal person who doesn't know anything about Sam and Fishtank would stay? They did talk about using a talent agency next time like how Alex Stein finds people.

They casted fans (only two people didn't know about Sam). They commonly broke the 4th wall, half the cast ended up quitting or getting kicked by like the 4th week. Production seemed to take sadistic joy in torturing them. Just generally bad bad vibes.

Staff didnt coach em, didnt feed em, didnt give em air and sunlight. More importantly the most pushed bits were debilitating shit like interrupting their sleep and not waking em up early.
They started the season with a moronic "Find the insider" plot that just made everyone realize they were all MDE superfans. The fish didnt know how to react becase theyre moronic zoomers, and broke keybafe, or broke the fourth wall.
The staff felt betrayed and had no way of dealing with this problem, from then on they went super hard but with zero positive incentives. They tortured em in a very boring passive way until the 3 coolest fish bailed. Show died by then.

It was an amazing thing to watch, everything was entertaining, when the fish rightfully did nothing we would come up with our own shit over here, we would shit on Sam and Jet. This season obliterates S1 but nothing about it was actually anyone production or the fishes did
Big Brother type shows rest solely on the personalities of their contestants. The promise of Fishtank was that it would push contestants further than any mainstream TV could ever be allowed to, but that's a promise that's only entertaining when there are distinct personalities that can get fleshed out and provide more spectacle under pressure. There's also the aspect of the niche aspect of the show, whereas in more mainstream shows like Big Brother you have contestants that have entertaining personalities in an artificial way because they know they're on mainstream TV, Fishtank had the promise of a Peep Show type appeal where you get an intimate glimpse into entertaining but real and bizarre personalities. With a second season where all the contestants were aware of the show and most of all fans which means their personalities were inherently derivative I can understand why it failed even as they pushed them to uncomfortable sadistic limits.
There was a huge disconnect between Sam, Jet and the Fish. Sam wanted the apprentice, Jet wanted Friends with TTS, and the the strongest fish pushed for Big Brother.
I love Tay but she has no excuse to talk about "Strategy" or "The game" that was an incredible blunder. But its also not her fault, she had nothing to work with, the other strong personalities were either unstable or the opposite, lacked showmanship.
I think its just a case of everyone being too cool for school, no one was humble enough. Jet never forgot em for being cringe kids, even tho theyre just kids. The fish never forgot the Staff for the shitty conditions. SHow was so addictive because you would macro and micromanage each decision and create superior scenarios in your mind.
