Technically he's still involved even afterwards since he voiced LSP in Together Again and Fionna and Cake

To be fair I don't think he was hoping for it to be another smash hit

How come JG Quintel and Ben Bocquelet made successful cartoons but never bail out on their cartoon? Pendelton Ward must be a lazy frick considering his weight.

How much did he get paid?

Apparently CN showrunners tend to get paid around $70,000 to $100,000 a year.

That’s not much money considering the work load and time commitment. Makes even more sense why animators would be mad when they lose their backend payments because a show gets vaulted.

    >Or was the pay just not worth it?
The pay is a good reason TO quit if you have a successful franchise. He's got "created by" residuals coming in from every spin-off, EP credits on most of the original run, and writing/voice credits scattered everywhere else, plus whatever shred of merchandising he gets. Short of making another smash hit franchise, doing additional work won't hold a candle to the money that's already flowing in just for existing. The man doesn't have expensive tastes. There's no reason he should keep working if he wasn't enjoying it.

It’s not uncommon for showrunners to get divorced during the course of a show. The schedules and stress are unreal and doing years of that puts a lot of strain on relationships. It’s possible that if it was putting a ton of strain on his home life, he chose to keep his family over continuing to helm the show.

The creators that people b***h about the most on here aren't, but I think quite a few of them are. In any case, Penn was when he stepped down.
