The Hubble Ultra Deep Field is an area of the sky the size of the head of a pin located in the constellation Fornax containing approximately 10,000 galaxies (not stars, galaxies). I'm more cynical than most people but that will never not be mindblowing, in my opinion.

what an amazing composited and edited shot that doesn’t actually resemble something you could see with your own eyes anywhere

The craziest thing to me is that we cans see so far away that we are seeing so far back in time like a literal actual time machine that we can see back to apparently about a quarter million years after the big bang.

I think people mostly like it because it is such an incredibly small portion of sky being photographed (approx. 1/13th the size of a full moon) yet contains so much. Most people in the world never see stars or like 5-10 at most on clear nights

Why is causality so fricking slow lads?

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oh-My-God_particle

it was traveling at 0.9999999999999999999999951 times the speed of light, its Lorentz factor was 3.2×1011 and its rapidity was 27.1. Due to special relativity, the relativistic time dilation experienced by a proton traveling at this speed would be extreme. If the proton originated from a distance of 1.5 billion light years, it would take approximately 1.71 days in the reference frame of the proton to travel that distance

Of the billions of planets and stars in that photo, none of them are interesting at all. None of them have life, none of them have any cool shit. It's basically like if the earth was just desert sand. Space is the most reddit hobby. Tell me why the frick I should care about a fricking astroid field 1 trillion ks away?

Even if one in a billion planets have life, then there would still be billlions or trillions of planets out there in the universe with some sort of life; maybe just bacteria, maybe 10-foot-tall beautiful big-titted women, but life all the same.

Reminder that based on the Heisenberg uncertainty priciple and the general concept of not being able to measure without observing, the reality is life started and likely only exists rifht jere on Earth. Every single variable necessary for life on Earth is custom tailored specficially for us, because the soup of quantum variability was set in stone the moment life started and was able to observe.

Correct. It's funny listening to space gays wax poetic about muh awe inspiring universe when there's literally almost nothing out there. Space gays perceptions of what space is has been warped by video game and SciFi where the skybox is an EDM light show and there's comets buzzing around and nebula storms and shit and in reality it's just a giant endless void of black with a few pin pricks of light from dying stars that have nothing around them but silent husks of rocks that are all covered with the same dead minerals. The Earth itself is the most amazing thing conceptually in the universe and quite possibly totally unique, there may not be another single sentient lifeform in the entire galaxy, there may very well be no life at all besides us. 99.999999999999999999999999999999999% of planets will never experience something as simple and majestic as a warm summer's rainfall. Frick space.

I agree actually. It’s like when people post that tiny blue image of earth to make the claim that earth is insignificant- but what you’re really seeing in that image is the place your entire reality is conceived and viewed from. You only ever really experience yourself, and that tiny sphere is the only place we know of where conscious experiences are happening able to look outside of themselves and give value judgements like space and distance and meaning to the things around them. Everything else is inert, dead rock, incapable of perceiving itself or anything around it. Your entire world of meaning is happening on that dot and is the thing giving value to everything around it and even deciding for itself what sense to ascribe the vastness around it. Every computation of the laws of the universe, every rearrangement of them making this image possible, happened because of conscious minds, the only things perceiving anything in the first place. It’s not the black nothing around the dot that matters, dwarfing the little oasis, it’s everything around that dog which doesn’t matter. We ourselves generate the concept of mattering. We are little the centre of not only our own universes as observers, but quite literally the only valid currently known claim as being the centre of the universe as a species which can even generate a concept like a centre and ascribe a focal point to it. Consciousness is the most intense mystery you are every going to encounter in all that empty space, and you pass over it without a thought.

If you even start speaking, you’re already affirming the superiority of a mind over the rest of the inertness in space, since even denigrating it you employ and assume the inherent rightness of your own faculties in making statements about everything else. It doesn’t matter if this faculty will vanish at some point, because as it exists, it is the only thing capable of judging any phenomena and giving a gay little stance on it like your own. has no meaning outside of being an embodied consciousness that experiences time is what i’m saying. so if you assert that, you already assuming conscious experience can make judgements on everything else

You know that who wants to be a millionaire troll question that goes “which of these answers can be correctly chosen at random?” The point is all of the answers are wrong, and despite the “right” answer being one of the choices, it’s still wrong, because it’s contradicted by other answers. So the “correct” answer is paradoxical.

What you’re doing is trying to argue from a lower perspective. You can’t parse that “there is no meaning/value” isn’t a value judgement.

no you literally cannot comprehend what an axiom is. you’re trying to give me a gödel argument which actually contradicts what you are saying, not me. by speaking you are tacitly assuming and must assume the truth of your judgements, even in calling them wrong, you are calling your own reasoning faculty correct and entitled to make such judgements. there’s literally no way out here but silence, you contradict yourself by arguing about it. you’re trying to stab me to death for the sake of anti knife violence. and if anything, the fact that all our models of reality end up contradicting themselves is a massive blow to the kind of midwit who thinks he can make sweeping statements about “harsh reality” (reality which he is, which he has deemed offensive to himself)

Kek you’re back to the math larping you don’t understand. This has nothing to do with set theory. It has nothing to do with constructing some sort of model of reality either. It has to do with you asserting things, and assuming every inbuilt axiom in your brain has the capacity to not only intuit and represent reality faithfully, but form true judgements about it to the point where it can as a matter of certainty make statements about itself in relation to the things around it.

I’m describing paradoxes. When someone of your intellect encounters a paradox, they exhaust themselves with masturbatory nonsense to try to prove one answer is correct, because you’re incapable of higher thought.

                Anonymous

No moron, I agree with you about paradoxes. I think paradox is the essential nature of human thought, but you aren’t mounting a defence of paradox. You’re using your conscious faculties in a yes/no line of reasoning to arrive at the conclusion that your faculties don’t matter. That’s not a logical paradox, it’s just presupposing your ability to make true judgements and having the stupid opinion that your judgements don’t matter while employing them. Obviously everything humans use to describe the universe is just an analogy. Obviously a scientific model is just whatever analogies are useful for their time. None of this naturally leads to the kind of materialistic nihilism you’re espousing but the opposite, that we aren’t in touch with a 1:1 representation of reality and infact our minds do a lot to organise that information for us. The kind of people who reject fuzzy logic are usually atheistic morons who believe that random chemical activity has given them a 1:1 model of reality they can make certain judgements about, including the moronic proposition that a series of contingent things suddenly gains the ability to create itself when called the universe.

You’re attempting to ascribe value to consciousness in terms that rely upon consciousness. It is provable that consciousness isn’t intrinsic to the universe, thus, consciousness is not an axiom of the universe.

I know that last reply was a little brutal, but that’s the point. In order to ascribe value to consciousness, it can’t be on its own terms, because that’s just circular logic. Which is why I was surprised you didn’t start going on about gawd.

                >you said earth
                You did too.

                >Everything else is inert, dead rock, incapable of perceiving itself or anything around it.

JWST primary mirror driving design onjective is to be a "light bucket" as big as possible to catch as many photons as possible to see very dim IR sources. Therefore it's a paneled honeycomb so it could fold. Guess they thought lens artifacts appearing in glamor shots was an acceptable tradeoff. Dunno why they don't process them out, maybe there's a technical reason, but I have noticed NASA has been favoring some "rawer" images the last couple years.

          Anonymous

No better option really. The spikes are caused by the fact that the mirror is made of smaller hexagonal mirrors that unfolded to form one large 6.5m diameter mirror.

Maybe once Starship is up and running we'll get something better and much less origami-like. Starship itself is 9m diameter so it could in theory carry a single mirror up that's even larger than JWST's unfolded mirror.
One idea, though I doubt it will happen. Is to make Starship itself the telescope, with an almost 9m mirror built into the ship. Pic related goes further and makes it binocular with 2 mirrors, though that's a stretch.

Everything we see now will eventually become unreachable and forever gone until even the distance to our nearest stars will become physically impossible to bridge. everything is moving away from everything else. if something is 100 light years away in the time it takes to travel that 100 lightyears space expands and it makes the trip longer. JWST has to use near infrared to see what it sees cause the light has been traveling so long its been stretched and red shifted. though alpha centauri is only 4.5 light years away if we moved at the speed of light its gonna take longer than 4.5 years.

it was traveling at 0.9999999999999999999999951 times the speed of light, its Lorentz factor was 3.2×1011 and its rapidity was 27.1. Due to special relativity, the relativistic time dilation experienced by a proton traveling at this speed would be extreme. If the proton originated from a distance of 1.5 billion light years, it would take approximately 1.71 days in the reference frame of the proton to travel that distance

You're right. The space race was literally just America's captured Nazis competing with the Soviet Union's captured Nazis.

    I have a pitch:
    >A team of space border police is sent to stop a ship that's attempting to cross from the Milky Way galaxy to the Andromeda galaxy
    >While they do find a bunch of intelligent life forms native to the Milky Way, including ten humans, they end up discovering parts for a mysterious machine
    >A machine that belongs to that a dying empire, the Laurent empire of the Andromeda Galaxy
    >Its later revealed to be a weapon that destroys an entire galaxy's worth of life with an artificial gamma ray beam
    >The current emperor, Deodat Laurent, seeks to deprive the universe of life after having lost his queen and son during a failed assassination attempt by a violent dissident against the empire
    >The border control team is later acquainted with the previous Laurent emperor, Ernest Laurent, who is an elderly being of extraordinary strength and dons a beautiful black armor that represents all the stars in space
    >After the officers and Ernest embark on their adventure to stop Deodat, the universe's federal agencies search for the delinquent officers
    >They also discuss as to whether they be fired and imprisoned in TRAPPIST-1e's hyper maximum x100 correctional facility, which is the worst in the known universe
    >The Milky Way, in last ditch attempt to find their careless officers, pays the galaxy's most dangerous cyborg assassin to find them
    >He's dressed like a cowboy but uses a shotgun rather than a revolver
    >The assassin joins the group after a brief fight with Ernest on top of a moving train

I wonder if most people know pretty much all of space is just black and white. It's all just white light out there.
All the space images are edited and coloured.
I mean sure it would still look impressive if you actually saw this with your real eyes, but very much underwhelming.

The odds that if there were aliens out there they would be completely unrecognizable to us. They will have integrated into super intelligent AI able to alter the fabric of reality itself. They would be like God to us. Every little coincidence, every act of nature, everything that happens could be from an alien altering our existence to guide our evolution. Imagine a deterministic super intelligence that can predict what every atom on our planet is going to do a million years from now.

For all you know, Jesus Christ could have been part of a ploy of alien intelligence to shape our future and guide us to a better understanding of the universe.

Even better if the universe is a simulation and some alien species has discovered a way to alter the source code of the universe and implanted an AI into to control things. Spaceships wouldn't need engines, they could just manually alter the quantum coordinates of objects to move them around or teleport them to anywhere they choose.

If aliens exist they probably have a few million years of evolution on us and we would have no idea what they would be like or what their motives would be.

I am not anti-science, I am anti-scientism. I reject both "only my book has all the answers" religion and "it's not real if we can't perceive it and replicate it in laboratories and have repeatability on demand" science equally, for both are based on fundamentally false premises.

The thing is this, you ask people "How do you know X?" and they'll probably reply by saying something like "Well, because it's in my science books." or "Well, because it's been peer-reviewed." or "Well, because it's been agreed upon by a majority of scientists.", but these are flimsy defences, because unless you can verify for yourself whether something is true or not either by observation or by doing an experiment about it by yourself, you are relying essentially on external sources for your information and it is naïve to think that those sources don't have agendas.

What the average person calls 'science' (which is actually just mainstream science) has been hijacked by politics, religion and corporations. So-called 'peer review' these days is usually nothing more than a circle-jerk. Just as people support the separation of church and state (and rightfully so), I support the separation of science and state. We owe it to our innate intelligence to question everything and that includes everything that I tell you.

The 'science' that is telling you the covid vaccine is safe is the same 'science' that is telling you that men can be women.
Remember that. If you politicise science, you kill the spirit of science (which is to question things).

Most so-called 'scientists' today don't know their ass from their elbow and just unquestioningly repeat what their textbooks tell them to repeat.

It's because space is hostile to human life.
Mars is probably the MOST friendly planet in the solar system. Let's look at it
      >no air
      >no light
      >extremely cold all the time
      >no water
      >regolith is heavily made up of bleach compounds.
      >extremely radioactive
Everywhere in space is like this, so if humans are destined for space travel the choice is to live and die in tin cans, like pond scum or to fundamentally change ourselves to be tolerate of the hostility of space, in which case we are no long human at all, but something else.
