JWST primary mirror driving design onjective is to be a "light bucket" as big as possible to catch as many photons as possible to see very dim IR sources. Therefore it's a paneled honeycomb so it could fold. Guess they thought lens artifacts appearing in glamor shots was an acceptable tradeoff. Dunno why they don't process them out, maybe there's a technical reason, but I have noticed NASA has been favoring some "rawer" images the last couple years.
No better option really. The spikes are caused by the fact that the mirror is made of smaller hexagonal mirrors that unfolded to form one large 6.5m diameter mirror.
Maybe once Starship is up and running we'll get something better and much less origami-like. Starship itself is 9m diameter so it could in theory carry a single mirror up that's even larger than JWST's unfolded mirror.
One idea, though I doubt it will happen. Is to make Starship itself the telescope, with an almost 9m mirror built into the ship. Pic related goes further and makes it binocular with 2 mirrors, though that's a stretch.

The odds that if there were aliens out there they would be completely unrecognizable to us. They will have integrated into super intelligent AI able to alter the fabric of reality itself.
