The tone did shift drastically though and it's not unfair to say the first half was more compelling than the latter, which was much more fan service. Either way it was kino.

Yeah I agree it was rushed but there wasn't much you could do in a 20 minute time frame also the show was nearing 20 years old at that point it was time to wrap it up.

I really liked that she wasn't some feminist trying to outdue jack and instead she was just a sweet girl and his love interest

Ashi was actually a good character. She didn't try to outshine him, wasn't "men are bad" etc and actually loved and respected him when she saw everything he went through.
The arc was great and I was happy for Jack.

if you're really rich any village girl from said shitholes will be sold off to you at a not so high price by their parents if you know where to look for

I won't lie. I saw Samurai Jack when I was a teen and it came on cartoon network. Fricking loved it with a passion.

Got nostalgia-baited when the last season came out. I actually did like it - except not getting over Aku's voice.
I didn't like the ending because it fricked Jack over and went all adult when the whole show didn't have that feeling to it.

    Felt cheated on

      >went all adult when the whole show didn't have that feeling to it.
That's because everyone was a child when samurai jack aired. The audience grew up so it was more mature.
I remember seasons 1-4 always having mature undertones but never going all the way. There was always lots of insect blood or robot blood oil. Personally I liked that it was more mature it didn't feel restrained.
Also I liked how in season 5 they dealt with the idea of samurai jack taking a human life. He's a samurai after all and samurais do kill people.

        >That's because everyone was a child when samurai jack aired. The audience grew up so it was more mature.
I understand that, I do. But the only reason Samurai Jack came back was for our inner teens/kids.
Don't know if it makes sense, but I wanted a Samurai Jack ending to Samurai Jack - not for it to go realistic on me. My inner teen was dissapoint.
        >I remember seasons 1-4 always having mature undertones but never going all the way.
It never went "bad". It always had a happy/good ending.
        >Also I liked how in season 5 they dealt with the idea of samurai jack taking a human life. He's a samurai after all and samurais do kill people.
Eh. Like I said, I watched Samurai Jack for an ending to Samurai Jack - not "the adult version - it's serious now guise" version.
I get your points, but I was watching for nostalgia, not a change in the tone of the show.
        Still felt great watching though.

This is such a perfect example of the how the show played with contrasting both the visual and audio at the same time. The stark blacks and whites, combined with punctures of absolute sudden volume spikes of dissonance in the creature's roar. Really spectacular shit when you're a kid.

Samurai Jack's original run was one of the best action shows of all time, that said the last season was solid but needed more time focusing on Jack and Aku dueling and that could've been achieved with just one more ep, it was too rushed in the end. Also it lacked the artful direction you got from the old show, missed the vibe of episodes like 4 Seasons of Death. I'm just glad the story was concluded cause to me it felt like Samurai Jack was stuck in this eternal struggle that he would never get out of which was tough since I started the show when I was like 7.

The biggest mistake Genndy made was changing to a linear format. Other than a few episodes, you could really watch the bulk of the series in any particular order and it had zero effect on your ability to understand and enjoy them. There were even several episodes of mini anthology that had stories that didn't connect to each other in the slightest beyond being a Samurai Jack tale. It's the entire appeal to the Samuari/Western style of story telling.

      Anonymous

The ironic thing is that the non-linearity was pretty much imposed on the original show, they didn't have a choice on the matter due to how CN used to air the episodes.
Season 5 is the "unrestricted" version of what the show was intended to be.

        Anonymous

Of course. Another fine example of how something of actual quality does require it's maker to have some fricking limits imposed on him if he's unable to do it himself.

Not OP, and I'm not gonna defend a show made for kids (one of which I was) on it's plot and arc and all that.
      The plot was simple:
      >Long ago in a distant land, I, Aku, the shape-shifting Master of Darkness, unleashed an unspeakable evil!
      >But a foolish samurai warrior wielding a magic sword stepped forth to oppose me.
      >Before the final blow was struck, I tore open a portal in time, and flung him into the future, where my evil is law!
      >Now the fool seeks to return to the past, and undo the future that is Aku!
Das it mane. Das all you need. Everything else are episodes in that grand adventure and the character is Jack.

        Anonymous

        >Das it mane. Das all you need.
Yet they technically gave us more. That's what makes the show memorable. It punched above its weight class.

          Anonymous

          >Yet they technically gave us more.
Of course, but to understand that you'd have had to watch the show which that anon doesn't seem to have.
Like we mentioned above, there were episodes that were fricking movie-level quality stories within 20 mins like

way too difficult but heres a top ten after looking at a list to jog my memory
          >Jack Versus the Ninja
          >The Princess and the Bounty Hunters

It was gay to assemble all the characters from the show to fight and Genn told on himself when he explained Ashi was a character he created in his teens and then had the tragic "I'll always love you ack" death ending as if the show was still written by a teenager. I don't think there would be a single person on earth who would be happy if samurai jack came back. We all waited a very long time to see the finale and we finally got closure. They would just be desecrating a grave if season 6 was made. The vidya gets a pass.

The vidya is pretty much just a retelling of S5 with a bonus alternative ending. Nothing wrong with that.
