She's not very alluring in English, but she's ok in Japanese. She does have a reason why she's so uptight, but it isn't covered in the movie adaption

Incorrect, she deserved her happy ending, I don't need no book to tell me too.

I didn't mind the "blonde dike" so much, I think she was written to be abrasive and haughty and annoying; it made it more satisfying when she eventually came around.

They're extremely good. The worldbuilding is fantastic. If you've watched the first Vampire Hunter D, you'll remember all the strange creatures and flora and fauna. All of those things get described in the books. They are recurring too, as newer things are brought into the story every book. There's so many oddities with all the different locations, monsters, plants, cities, etc, you've got something to wonder about in each book

There's a lot of various characters too, many of which you'll become attached to, or feel sad for. It is a very somber series. Bloodlust was adapted from Demon Deathchase, which is quite a bit different than the movie in many ways. So many in fact, they are almost two different stories entirely

The first book establishes the world, so I'd recommend starting with that one. The first Vampire Hunter D movie is an adaption of it

There's decades of Vampire Hunter D books that Madhouse could sit around and adapt for years, but they don't. There is no audience for this in Japan. Even back then when Bloodlust was made, they knew it. Bloodlust was made for a western audience at the movie theater. What sells is moe and isekai. It is cheap and the risks are minimal

To get another D book adapted on the level of Bloodlust, you'd need some rich oil prince in the middle east or something to want to fund it. Japan is not going to foot the bill for it and neither is the USA

The Russell ones are very accurate, for a comic adaptation anyway. Some of the dialogue is verbatim but condensed. Great 70s psychedelic art too, matches the vibe of the era more.
The french ones by Julien Blondel cut out some of the multiverse stuff and even skip through some of the books (although the events in them still happened). The art is hellraiser-y with modern techniques, reminds me a little of Requiem Vampire Knight, but not that much. Still, it's a very good adaptation, and Moorwiener himself has said it's his favorite.

Probably because Hideyuki Kikuchi uses the same type of formula in the books

          >D goes to a new part of the Frontier
          >New character has a problem
          >D attempts to solve said problem with varying results of success or sometimes none at all
          >Melancholy ending

It works pretty well and gives the author a lot of creative freedom to make new and fresh stories every time. Kentaro Miura had a formula similar to this with The Black Swordsman, The Lost Children and The Flowers of Oblivion chapters of Berserk. He abandoned the formula though and then things started to stagnate really bad with no direction. It became more difficult to introduce new characters, settings and stories

It really did spiral into mediocrity after The Lost Children. If you liked The Black Swordsman and The Lost Children, you might like The Flowers of Oblivion. It is a Dreamcast game and has the same kind of pacing as those other two chapters

Shonen still sells incredibly well and is what most people think about when anime is discussed. Not too familiar with vampire hunter D but it would probably be considered seinen. A lot of seinen are considered kino. It just needs the right platform and studio. If madhouse or mappa adapted it and put it on netflix, they'll be printing money (assuming the source material is actually well written, which it apparently is)

The Romans killed Christ, the US follows the Roman model.

Why don't these well animated OVAS get made anymore?

Put yourself in the shoes of an animation studio. Do you make a high quality OVA/ONA that suits your tastes but is unlikely to be economically very successful or do you make a lower quality series you might not enjoy as much but it more likely to keep your company afloat? The majority of studios will obviously pick the latter and the ones who pick the former probably go bankrupt after their first release.

There's just not a lot of business sense in making more work for yourself than you need to. We enjoy it as art, but they do have to pay their bills after all.

because they have no purpose anymore
they used to be advertising for the manga
      now everything just gets adapted

This is the only team I would have wanted to adapt Berserk properly.

Berserk was cursed with the worst adaptions since the first anime. I don't know why Young Animal didn't just save up and hire Madhouse instead of all the horrid garbage they had made by various other studios who shit the bed

It is really impressive he's been writing D for so many years and still going

Two movies were also surprisingly accurate adaptations of the first and third novel. Not 1:1 of course, but way more than you'd expect them to be.

He definitely is hot, though he can be pretty scary looking too in some cases. That's part of his charm that's he draws people to him, but also people are rightfully afraid of him

Setting is by far the most interesting part of Vampire Hunter D for me.

I wish the books had its own wiki, documenting all the various things in the world in autistic detail, like the Dead Man's Hands plants that grab you when you walk near them

Is it anything like Ninja Scroll (movie)? So tragic what happened to anime since it became a fan-service sex-pest infested cesspit.

It isn't as hyper violent with nudity as Ninja Scroll was, but it has all of the theatrics

The 2000s movie is fricking amazing. So glad I was told about it. The director made a lot of other kino as well, Kawajiri. Watch Ninja Scroll by him.

I've seen a couple versions of the original and the changes in dialogue make a big difference.

One part I recall being more interesting/making more sense is the meeting where Magnus Lee's emissary brings the candle. Worth hunting out if you are a fan IMHO.

There was a version of the original that I can't find anymore. It had Count Lee disintegrating when the rock fell on him. For some reason, most versions don't have that in it and it is just a flashing red screen

Vampire Hunter D are Castlevania movies in everything but the name.
