Holy shit this movie is fricking awful.
I finished the OG show and really loved it and found it a unique ride and I kept hearing that this movie is a masterpiece and better than the TV version but it was a big fat lie.
it's so lifeless, no character development, everything is rushed, the story is butchered to hell, most of the good parts are cut, the deaths of certain characters are way worse...
how did this shit get so much praise?
As a piece of animation it's fantastic but as a condensed retelling of the show it's a fricking mess. I mean Max and Milia's romance in the movie makes the shows version look like a long-term relationship.
>As a piece of animation it's fantastic
Maybe, but Ideon Be Invoked looked better and it was an older movie
>Be Invoked looked better
Watch it again, it really didn't.
I did, last week
I'm willing to agree. Be invoked had some godly layouts.
I think its great, sure not as well told as the show but what can you do as a retelling of it in a single movie.
why not make it 2-3 movies like Ideon/Gundam?
Honestly the movie felt like it existed just to sell Minmay's songs
I don't know, macross was really popular at the time too, so it wouldn't have been impossible for the studio & shoji to go that direction.
>why not make it 2-3 movies like Ideon/Gundam?
Then they couldn't do all new animation like that. And, really, the selling point of the movie is the animation. If you're wondering why some people say it's above the tv show... it's all about the animation.
Anyone who tells you DYRL is better than SDF has literally not watched SDF and for whatever reason a lot of Macross "fans" pride themselves on not watching SDF.
As for the movie itself, it's pretty obvious why the characterization suffers: It's Kawamori's first directing project and unfortunately he never got any better after this.
Anyone who says that the movie is better than the show is a moron with the attention span of a fricking fish.
It's a great watch if you take it for what it is: a summary of the show that trims a lot of what it made it unique, but with incredible animation in the battles. It works because there's a lot of things that refer the TV series and if you watched them you don't need them to explain you those references. As a standalone product it's confusing at best.
DRYL = Super Dimension PURE KINO Macross
SDF = Super Dimension Annoying Melodrama Macross
>KINO
Frick off tourist.
Keep in mind that DYRL is supposed to be a movie you would watch if you lived in the actual SDF universe. Think of it as their own "Saving Private Ryan".
false
Not in the least.
It and the series are both supposed to be different fictionalized accountings of the 'real' events. There's also something about how the in-fiction DYRL isn't the same as the DYRL we saw, but that may have been conjecture.
DYRL is literally mentioned in later entries you fricking moron.
No it isn’t. They have their own “Minmay Story” in universe.
i think its good. its just that you are a fricking worthless homosexual and that gets in the way of enjoying anime. why dont you go put a loaded shotgun in your mouth and have a nice day.
who said any of what you're claiming and where exactly did you come from? sure hope you aren't the dumb Black person responsible for influx of other garbage threads with needless opinions lately
