Honestly this is incredible

Just finished last night, the first half was okay, but the second half took it to a whole new level

It's very rare that we get a good adapation of a video game (let alone one as wacky as fallout), but this blew me away

From all the twists and turns, the subtle vidya references from the games, the world itself, the music, everythigns so fricking good

it builds upon the existing lore, adds stuff we don't know and since it's the furthest away in the timeline there's so much to explore now

fricking A Todd. Frickin A.

We'll never see another Fallout game. Bethesda is going to frick up TES 6 and when they do after back to back failures (Starfield & TES6) Microsoft will shudder Bethesda to prevent anyone else from using the Fallout brand to compete with them and that’ll be that. It’s done.

Bethesda released Starfield last year. The entire studio and three satellite studios are working on Elder Scrolls 6 that won’t be out til 2026 at the earliest if they reuse Starfield meshes and don’t upgrade for latest graphics tech. They might just wait for the new consoles by then so it might come out 2027/2028.

They aren’t making any fallout game. I think obsidian will make the next fallout because their new game is coming out later this year and they might shelve outer worlds 2 to focus on New Vegas 2 and they might release it by 2026 if they reuse the Starfield engine which Microsoft owns. I think that’s the game plan if Microsoft wants two aaa entries to release close to each other but not too close to be competing.

Tim Cain is blogging about Fallout and video game development on his YouTube channel, but I don't think he has an interest in continued game development. It was clear that Fallout was a passion project that succeeded as much as it did due to Interplay thinking of it as a B-tier project. He discussed why he left Fallout 2 mid-development, and it was basically Interplay and Brian Fargo mismanaging the SHIT out of 2's development process (Fargo's intentions were good, but his methods were fricking awful). He's out of the picture, Avellone is cancelled, Gonzales is gone (he's working on Horizon now), and Sawyer's last remaining brain cell withered away on Twitter years ago.
                >if it ever happens
Bethesda will never permit another Fallout: New Vegas to exist, but the thing is that they don't need to do anything to prevent it. At most, we'll get a remake after the inevitable Fallout 3 remake. They're perfectly content to be milking the Fallout IP for all it's worth while letting Amazon have its way with the West Coast setting. Bethesda won.

      Anonymous

No, I honestly think it was wiser to release every episode at once. Consider the following: we're a week out of the show's release, and the audience has already balkanized into four groups:
      >Bethesda Fallout fans who are happy with the show because it's a good adaptation of Bethesda Fallout
      >Viewers who aren't familiar with Fallout, and are happy with the show because it's a wild romp through a wacky wasteland
      >Black Isle and / or Obsidian Fallout fans who are ambivalent about the show
      >Black Isle and / or Obsidian Fallout fans who dislike the show because it's basically Bethesda Fallout, but on the West Coast
The latter two groups are already realizing that the show has significant flaws, both as a TV show and as a Fallout adaptation - and the last group is extremely fricking obnoxious. By dropping all the episodes at once, you're ensuring that your show is FOTM entertainment that will be watched and forgotten as "good", rather than a weekly series like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, or Twin Peaks S3 that have to hold up under direct scrutiny for months at a time.

The less the first two groups think about things like
      >How did no one realize that everyone in Vault 32 was dead despite the 3 vaults regularly communicating and exchanging goods
      >How did Steph's husband Bert, who's from Vault 32, not realize that he didn't recognize a single Vault 32 inhabitant
      >Why is the water chip "crisis" in Vault 33 immediately memory hole'd
      >Why was the capital of the NCR moved hundreds of miles south to LA only to be bombed
      >Why did the West Coast's most advanced nation-state completely collapse from one city being bombed, and why is there no evidence of other NCR settlements in the LA area
      >Why does the BoS elder decide that Maximus "coveting his knight's armor", lying, and deceiving the BoS is reason enough to pardon his execution and hail him as the "sword" of his new BoS?
      >etc.
the better. Releasing it weekly would give people much more time to poke holes in it.

        Anonymous

Thanks for an elaborate answer. Yes, that's some valid points but you could make these kind of points with most of the other aspects with all the previous fallout games. The capital was also moved a bit in the older games, and frankly. When the last fallout game of the isometric view came in 1998, it's not that strange that they'd move some things around to better fit a narrative being built. One i personally have felt they have done a mostly good job on. As well as some of your points likely being answered in the next season.

Don't really agree still with releasing all episodeds at once, still wish they waited with it.

          >The capital was also moved a bit in the older games
Isn't it still in the same place (east of Vault 13), but just renamed from Shady Sands to "New California Republic"? Regardless, my issue with Shady Sands and NCR is that it's moved to Los Angeles (which is no longer the Boneyard, by the way) for no other reason than to be blown up by Vault-Tec and completely collapse. Even Avellone wanted the NCR to endure an existential crisis after New Vegas, but wiping them off the face of the wasteland is, well, a waste. The NCR in the show isn't written as a faction, like the BoS, the Vault-Tec, or even the Enclave; they're written as a "mystery" to be solved by Lucy and the audience (at least, the audience members who aren't familiar with Fallout).

I do not have a lot of faith how the writers will resolve the intrigue that they've written into the show because of how they handled Moldaver, whose arc is the only one in season 1 that is resolved by the end of the season. Everything else is intentionally vague: Vault-Tec instigating the Great War, Vault-Tec's deeper motivation, whether Shady Sands being referred to as the "first" capital by a billboard means that there's another NCR capital (even though there's no evidence of any remaining NCR presence in the LA area).
Meanwhile, Moldaver's arc was about her being a mystery homie who died as soon as she served her role of acting as an exposition dump for Lucy. We don't know why she's so feared, we don't know how or why she survived the Great War (it'll be cryogenics, but still), we don't know what her feeling about the NCR are despite being its de facto leader, we don't know how she became the de facto leader of the NCR, etc. She just says
          >Lucy, your dad is a bad guy
turns on her infinite power MacGuffin, and dies from a gut shot which doesn't even happen on-camera.

Why doesn't Max know about sex and his idea of it is that its gross when his wiener pops and makes a mess? He took a gay Puerto Rican girls spot as bag man. There were also other women in the BOS.

Main girl has been fricking her cousin and pretty much everyone else in the vault, ffs.

          These were weird things.

They tried to do the whole "BoS mimics monastic conventions" thing without thinking it through. Same reason they bless their armor.

            Anonymous

NCR had 700,000 citizens about 15-20 years prior to current events. I don't think one crater on Shady Sands population of 35,000 wiped the NCR off the map. Maybe they fractured, maybe they held together. Maybe they DID lose in the big picture and there's just pockets of them now. Whatever the outcome, there's a reason the show only shows us a timeline of Shady Sands, and not the New California Republic as a whole.

              Anonymous

The issue with this is it's Shady Sands: the "first" capital of the NCR. That means that LA (in the show) is the heart of NCR territory. But there's no NCR presence in the show outside of the ~30-40 survivors of Shady Sands. By all accounts, there should still be evidence of an NCR or ex-NCR presence in the LA area, if not other NCR cities and towns which weren't destroyed - even if those settlements balkanized and their citizens resorted to raiding.

              It raises so many questions:
              >Why was Shady Sands the only NCR presence in the LA area if it's the capital?
              >Why would the NCR completely collapse in ~10 years from one city being bombed?
              >If it didn't collapse, why isn't the NCR sending aid to the survivors or reinforcements to the remnants?
              >What about the Hub? What about Junktown? What about Dayglow?
              >Did every single surviving NCR citizen in the LA area collectively and unanimously decide to evacuate and destroy their settlements?
              >What is Filly? Is it a former NCR settlement? Was it unincorporated when Shady Sands still stood? Filly is actually inspired by Megaton from 3
I'm not trying to be pedantic, these are all legitimate questions that should be asked and answered - and they don't need to be answered directly. That's what worldbuilding is for. But the show fails to answer a single one despite having 8 episodes to do all the worldbuilding it wants. There is no evidence as to the NCR's continued existence or nonexistence except the billboard that refers to Shady Sands as the "first" capital, a crumb which may or may not matter

Amazon wrote itself a massive amount of what I'll call "intrigue debt", where it's stuck between this "may or may not". Or you can call it season 2 bait. How you feel about the show as a whole is really about how much faith you have in Amazon to pay off all this intrigue debt that they've incurred when the only thing they've paid off is Moldaver's arc, which was shit.

                Moldaver's arc hasn't even begun.

It is still a colossal mystery how she survived, how she knows the Enclave scientist who defected with her invention, why everyone knows her name in the wasteland, what connection she has to Howard's daughter (who he is still searching for), and why Hank thinks Moldaver is just as bad as he is.

Don't sweat the game connections, the show sure doesn't. It takes place in the Fallout setting but it has no connection to the games, past present or future.

I assume cryogenics, since the show throws that shit around like candy. Vault-Tec? Freeze 'em all. Moldaver? Frozen or some other form of stasis. Cryogenics was previously shown to be an unreliable and not elite, but still exclusive way to survive the post-apocalypse. After all, everyone in the Fallout 4 vault dies except for 3 people.

                Who knows.

Moldaver's company was bought by Vault Tec so she had access to cryo. She could have even been frozen in Vault 31 and caused the Vault 32 rebellion when she was thawed out.

It seems a bit odd to continue to explore a dead character's backstory when there's still so much to explore (they really explained NOTHING about her). Even in a show with one character who has regular flashbacks. This also means that every scene about Moldaver has to be from Goggins's perspective, which doesn't seem realistic from a writing perspective at all.

                so heavy doubt

        >How did no one realize that everyone in Vault 32 was dead despite the 3 vaults regularly communicating and exchanging goods
Except they don't, the 3 vaults are not in regular communication with each other save for the overseer.
        >How did Steph's husband Bert, who's from Vault 32, not realize that he didn't recognize a single Vault 32 inhabitant
The vaults in the show are like actual vaults instead of the theme park ride in the games, there's possibly thousands of people living in a single one. Do YOU recognize every single person that lives in your neighborhood?
        >Why is the water chip "crisis" in Vault 33 immediately memory hole'd
It was meant as a throwback to the first game, and comedic relief.
        >Why was the capital of the NCR moved hundreds of miles south to LA only to be bombed
You're acting like various factions can't move around or relocate, which has happened in every single game. And they got nuked because it drives home that war never changes (kind of the main motiff of the games) and ties into the mcguffin of the season.
        >Why did the West Coast's most advanced nation-state completely collapse from one city being bombed, and why is there no evidence of other NCR settlements in the LA area
The NCR was collapsing already by the events of New Vegas, and the show takes place something like a decade afterwards.

I could go on but it's obvious these "holes" you mention are either explained by the show, or being aware of the lore.

The show literally had a shot of the small frame guy looking down on the catway, at the entrance of the vault, to show that there's so many levels to the place that you couldn't even see the bottom. And this isn't even half way through the first episode.

I have a strange feeling you may not have actually watched the show at all, for some reason.

              Anonymous

And that entails what exactly? There's nothing shown there except a pit into hell with nothing explained. You're making shit up for a point that doesn't have any semblance of truth in the games and certainly doesn't prove anything you said here so I think you actually didn't play the games and you're finger pointing at someone else when you don't have the full scope of what you're talking about

The point being is that there's more than a hand full of people living in them, and it's a lot harder to remember who lives in the same vault as you if there's 1k people living there.

It was really really good that they didn't do weekly release. The sidequest middle episodes would have lost audiences. Meanwhile, the comedy-action hybrid style with multiple characters wrapping storylines made the show very compatible with bingewatching.

During my latest binge-watching session of the Fallout TV show on Amazon Prime, I encountered a snag – my episode wouldn't load. Frantic, I reached out to Amazon Prime support, expecting a typical troubleshooting runaround. Instead, I was met with the most delightful support agent, who not only swiftly resolved my issue but also shared my enthusiasm for the show. As we wrapped up, they chuckled, 'All set, Lone Wanderer! The Wasteland awaits you.' And just like that, I had a new nickname and was back to my post-apocalyptic escapades.

Now, as 'Lone Wanderer,' I can't help but rave about the Fallout TV show. It's a spectacular triumph, a series that masterfully brings the iconic game to life. The narrative is compelling, the characters are richly developed, and the world-building is immersive beyond words. Each episode feels like a new adventure, keeping me glued to the screen and always hungry for more.

The Fallout TV show isn't just good; it's a groundbreaking addition to the sci-fi genre. It's the kind of series that doesn't just tell a story – it pulls you into its universe, making you a part of the narrative. So, join me, fellow 'Lone Wanderers,' on Amazon Prime. Let's traverse the Wasteland together and revel in the brilliance of this exceptional show. Trust me, it's an experience you don't want to miss!

Why are Bethesda fallout games so fricking boring? I feel more connected to my Courier than I do in any other fallout game. And I’m just a pissed off vengeance seeking jerk off who’s nothing special other than “Rage is a hell of an anesthetic” as motivation. Other ones I’m looking for family members who lied and were stolen from me who became jerk offs.
Is it the flat, one dimensional factions?
The repetitive, samey, landscape and dungeons? “Oh look another subway tunnel!”
The NPCs that have no soul and just are content fillers? And when you do find one that isn’t just a boring filler it’s a meaningless interaction like the fresh water beggar? Why bother if there’s no positive or negative outcome to make the world seem lived in?
Fallout 4 bores me to tears. Its quest mechanics are just fetch quest tier completions. Same thing with Starfield, now that I think about it. I think that’s the only thing Fallout 3 has on any other Bethesda fallout. There’s fun conflicts, but they seem weightless compared to the quests in New Vegas. Little Lamplight could have been a fun faction that they evolved or built on. Then there’s the AntAgonizer vs the Mechanist. Picking one faction drastically changing the towns future.

        Thanks for reading my blog.

That's a bit funny behind the scenes, you can almost tell the actor when he speaks about the actress portraying the chick that got her feet thorn up by the razor blade, that he's struggling using the "they" pronouns on her. Unironically a "they/them" person irl.

It was alright but the major misstep was the tone.
It never goes full satire and at the same time doesn't take itself seriously so it's stuck in some weird middle ground where most things are played for laughs, but in a dry tone. Like an unfunny dramedy.
It's kind of obvious they attempted to be "funny" almost with everything, but it just comes off .... flat.

Also they kept killing off interesting characters randomly

He's in a weird spot. They go out of the way to show he's not a super heroic person. Maybe they're just trying to show that it's hard to be entirely moral in such a cruel world. Or maybe they make him a bad person so that black people can relate to him easier. I think they will have him do something really bad in season 2 so they can make him a bad guy or kill him off.

the last episode was straight up fricking moronic with nonsense "payoffs". I have like 100 questions

    >Why would entire squad of Brotherhood of Steel just stand there while a fricking GHOUL monologues IN THE MIDDLE OF A COMBAT ZONE, and then STAND THERE DUMBFOUNDED AS HE SHOOTS ONE OF THEM AND NOT INSTANTLY OPEN FIRE. follow up why did none of the power armors just turn their big ass fricking SPOTLIGHTS ON SO THEY COULD SEE HIM when he cut the lights. the fricking helmets have built in night vision

so many problems with this fricking scene.

What was this dumb b***hes leading the NCR groups plan?
    >Spends months and tons of resources wiring up entire city grid to observatory labratory
And the scientist was secretly working for NCR I guess?
    >Alright the brotherhood is absolutely going to find out about this fusion tech eventually because we plan to light up an entire city and absolutely going to want to control it or destroy it
    >knows she has no chance of standing against brotherhood firepower obviously, sets this shit up anyway, gets herself and all her people killed, brotherhood gets control over the Fusion reactor.

At that point you mine as well have just given them the fricking thing.

Why was Lucy mother kept alive ALL THIS TIME? Just for this stupid fricking reveal that was obvious from literally the first episode. We know her mom was in the surface the NCR b***h basically tells her when she is in the vault

How the frick does a disgraced BOS trainee who was sent to die in battle for a punishment of malingering have the authority to Knight someone???

      Anonymous

I assume that Lucy's mother was kept alive because she was somehow important to Moldaver's character. I'm trying not to say it, but it's the only explanation that makes sense: they were lesbians. Consider that Moldaver's dying act isn't just turning on the cold fusion cell, but crawling over to Lucy's mother's corpse and hold her hand saying
      >We did it, Rose...
Like what the FRICK is their relationship? The only other explanation is that she decided to hold onto a charred, irradiated corpse for TEN YEARS to force Hank MacLean to see it.

        Anonymous

I see it as more she didn't want to put her friend out of her misery. The hand holding thing is something we all would do if we're about to die and friend or family is close to us.
There wasn't really any other hints of Lucy's mom or moldaver being a lesbian.
Or maybe modaver was a lesbo but the mom wasn't, but they were close enough that the mother just kind of accepted it but didn't reciprocate

        Anonymous

        Moldaver's arc hasn't even begun.

It is still a colossal mystery how she survived, how she knows the Enclave scientist who defected with her invention, why everyone knows her name in the wasteland, what connection she has to Howard's daughter (who he is still searching for), and why Hank thinks Moldaver is just as bad as he is.

Don't sweat the game connections, the show sure doesn't. It takes place in the Fallout setting but it has no connection to the games, past present or future.

The Hank father is going to get a fleshed out arc I bet. Hopefully he sticks to his mission, I'm not sure I want a redemption arc.

Comparing this to all the other TV shows I've watched, this show is extremely average. Mainly because of how cheesy it is.

These characters feel like they were written for teenagers to self insert into and nothing else.
The campfire scene and scene with Maximus saving Judy from Ghoul's bullet were laughably cheesy.

In 2 episodes, I couldn't be bothered to finish the rest of this series.
