It will be October before we know it. What's your favorite, or least favorite, horror comic? Is there one that terrified you, or stuck with you for a while afterward? What frightens you most of all, Cinemaphile?

Nothing fictional scares me, but I like Al Columbia's stuff.
Pim and Francie: The Golden Bear Days goes well with The Caretaker music, I think.
>Al Columbia
This. Master illustrator.
His stuff has such a unique vibe
It's what happens when an artist knows exactly what they want and is able to create it. His vision and execution is flawless in that regard.
Is there anyone else like him?
Dave Cooper sometimes does that rubberhose cartoon weirdness in his comics/artbooks.
Lots of sexual content.
Chris Ware, sort of.
They actual worked together on Acme Novelty Library (Al did the color separations for at least some of it).

*ACK-
never heard of Al Columbia before, just looked him up the art is amazing.
Thomas Ott's stuff is pretty cool too.
woah
Holy shit, I like his art style very much!!!
Love Thomas Ott. Dude rules
This is an oddly unsettling style. Definitely going to want to check out more of this artist's work.
Since Scarecrow's in the OP file, are there any actual scary stories involving him or characters similar to him (Mad scientist obsessed with the brain and messes with people's heads)? I really enjoy the character, but he doesn't really shine in terms of horror stories, probably because he's in a superhero comic. Joker's Asylum wrote him similar to a slasher character, but that's all I can think of and the reason it worked so well was because Batman didn't show up until the end.
The closest you'll get is Ragdoll from Starman unfortunately.
I dont know any good Scarecrow stories but here's a Troy Nixey commission as a consulation prize.
There's this one comic I remember was storytimed on Cinemaphile a few Halloweens back, about a family who stop at an abandoned hotel/apartment building during a storm and are terrorized by ghosts, but I just can't remember the name of it and it's been driving me nuts for days now.
Is it Hotell?
It was Lot 13 by Steve Niles. Worse than I remembered sadly.
BLAST is probably the closest thing to a horror comic i've read. There are probably lots of horror movie comic adaptions though. Wonder if any of them are any good.
Halloween: Nightdance was good, better than most of the sequel movies at least.
Just read it because if this post. Good shit, dark and affecting.
It was also fun seeing people in the comics freak out about the breasts.
*comments, not comics
My fault for being up too long
Im still mad there's no print edition of this
There is but only now I've learn that there are no English physical editions
Yeah thats the sadness. Ive debated finding a printer to make me a custom copy but I have no clue the cost
Most places would charge you half your life for a single print of something like that. They would expect an order of 50 or more at the least and it would still cost you a shit ton. Also not sure how legal it would be to get some people to help you crowdfund that in exchange for a copy. Basically just selling copies of a comic you don't own and didn't technically was never in print.
Is what it is mane.
Just finished it now, that was fricking scary.
Nice.
Americans can't into horror, I can't imagine anything scary that was made in USA, and comics are american culture, so tough luck, try looking into manga, Junji Ito et al. The only thing that is close to "horror comics" is A Serious House On Serious Earth, the rest is the same capeshit "but with vampires, blegh!".
>Americans can't into horror, I can't imagine anything scary that was made in USA
You don't have to. Just look about one post up.
>t. seething yurotroon
When did anyone mention America?
This is my current “horror adjacent” shelf
shit someone on here actually fricking likes locke and key and gideon falls other than me
Redneck is horror adjacent?
It’s about vampires in Texas/Mexico
I got it confused with Southern Bastards for a minute, don't know why
I can see how someone could easily confuse Southern Bastards, Redneck, and That Texas Blood
It's just weird I made that connection, Southern Bastards hasn't released in forever and Redneck came out with a new issue not that long ago. I'm just gonna chalk it up to crossed wires involving vaguely southern titles.
>recolored Vault of Horror
Gross. Get the Fanta or Russ Cochran collections instead.
third anon here, i also liked Locke and Key, especially the issue when the artist made an homage to calvin and hobbes
Finally something horror-related on Cinemaphile that isn't that gay ass analog shit. Frickers have been spamming that tripe more and more lately.
The movie adaptation of this was surprisingly really good
Analog horror could have been good if it wasn't all people copying each other and they tried something more original. It's always cosmic horror/supernatural shit, I'd like to see something more grounded, like an analog horror that's hiding messages from a killer or something.
Then it would just be horror that looks like a VHS tape, analog horror is just a shitty internet meme made by deep lore morons.
That would be preferable. The WNUF Halloween Special was close to what I mean, wouldn't mind analog horror as much if it took more tips from that and less from FNAF.
There's a secret coming out this year
*sequel
I'll have to keep an eye out for it, thank you!
The good analog horror is somehow still Local58 because it's the only one where all the episodes work on their own without having to follow some stupid deep lore.
There's also that one about the flesh chasm which is unique in that it's no a video series but rather in universe documents and pamphlets.
I'm just tired of all the threads posted here, it's obviously the same Cinemaphile-tards trying to make it a "thing" here.
i dont know why gideon falls doesnt get love
do people just hate lemire?
Personally I just abhor traced art in general, it is aesthetically disgusting to me. Unless the story is is top notch, it's going to distract me every time. The story certainly didn't reach that level, the second they introduced multiverses I kind of checked out. I normally like Lemire too but this was just kind of forgettable.
weird
the things i loved about it was the scratchy art style and the multiverse (sort of)
His art style is a bit static but I really liked all the weird paneling and 2-page spreads in GF
Eh, paneling doesn't really matter when it's filled with traced shit that has a grimy filter overlaid.
Not the greatest adaptations but still pretty good.
The one with the clowns was neat
Lovecraft has a nice amount of adaptions and homages
One thing about comics I never could stand, all the damn vampires.
>American vampire
>Vampire State Building
>Tomb of Dracula
>I, Vampire
>Killadelphia
>Redneck
>Morbius
>Vampirella
>blood stained teeth
>30 days of night
>vampironica
Frick you’re right, and those are just the ones off the top of my head
I liked the beginning of Nailbiter, but I heard it got stupid later on.
It very much does. It has a moronic ending then a moronic sequel series. I think shit went downhill the second they had the issue where fricking Bendis (the writer) guest starred.
Bendis?
Yes. Bendis. The comic book writer. That Bendis.
Brian Michael Bendis, the comic book writer, guest starred on the comic Nailbiter?
Are you a buffoon? Of course I'm talking about THAT Bendis, the one who writes comic books and was in Nailbiter.
Nailbiter, the horror comic, invited Brian Michael Bendis, the comic book writer, to guest write?
It starts as a neat spooky thriller but as it goes on it does get more comical and goofy, to the point that by the end of volume one and all through volume Nailbiter is almost a cartoon character.
Why do so many horror comics fail to stick the landing? Lot 13, Night of the Ghoul, The Autumnal, all had strong and compelling starts and weak, shitty endings. Are there even any good horror miniseries that end in a satisfying, or at least halfway decent, way?
Rise
A shame how slow it is, can most people really handle only experiencing horror in October?
>favourite
Lovecraft: The Myth of Ctuhulhu, by Esteban Maroto.
Good thread btw, got lots of recs
scary
good
Dr. Giggles… a friend in high school shown it to me after finding it on one of the teacher’s bookshelves between 2013-2014. Dunno know, but it’s always stuck with me.
I only know the movie which is super fun

Here's the link for the online one.
Are the Hill House or Archie Horror lines worth checking out?
The Dollhouse Family and Daphne Byrne are both great. The rest of the hillhouse books are okay at best.
Ice Cream Man is hit or miss, but there's a lot of good stuff in there.
I prefer The Silver Coin
I love Ice Cream Man. Nice weird semi connected stories.
I don't care for the framing device for either of em. Just make a horror anthology, no need for this gimmick shit.
Even the EC horror comics had the hosts as framing devices
I think it's more that for the EC horror comics the framing device was more of a bookend type of deal while for Ice Cream Man and Silver Coin it's within the story itself. Like the Crypt-Keeper wouldn't be as cool if he appeared within every story instead of just being a host. The coin and the Ice Cream Man having to appear in nearly every story kinda limits the whole anthology aspect in my opinion.
In fairness like 2/3rds of the stories don't have the ice cream man physically show up at all, or it's just a cameo. The ERT issue is a good example
Tapping the Vein is wonderful. Adaptations of Clive Barker shorts with a variety of fantastic art. In the same vein there's a bunch of good Hellraiser comics but they are a lot more hit and miss.
Ben Templesmith's Dead Space comics are rad.
The House On The Borderlands. But then I suppose it doesn't quite count since it's adapted from a book.
HP Lovecraft by Eric Krieg. It wasnt translated to English. I did once. Anon ignored the thread.
Other than that, besides Beasts of Burden I have no clue about western horror. Maybe The Walking Dead but thats not really the horror OP means.
how can a comic be scary?
Do you only find jumpscares scary?
Building tension through the combination of text and imagery - issue 5 of Ostrander's Spectre run isn't necessarily a horror but it's tense as frick.
Any cosmic horror comics?
Somewhat
This could be fun but I'm a fan of Burham/Schoening anyway
Please for the love of god just finish Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, I beg you
never gonna happen
Frick you.
don't blame me
the writer doesn't want to write it anymore but also won't let anyone else finish it
Burnham is working on TMNT and Sabrina?
Why the hell was there such a long hiatus for Chilling Adventures anyway?
I found pic related quite disturbing when I read it (although the plot doesn't actually make a lot of sense once you think it through).
Just read it
Was enjoying it till the end where the plot just falls apart and the story shits it's self
What a disappointment.
Dylan dog is amazing, but it does walk the line of horror/comedy, so it depends on which issue you get. But all are enjoyable.
The movie i hear is pretty bad and i have watched it before, but i honestly cant remember a single thing about it
Horror itself is a kitsch genre.
Spooky skeletons and bloody scenes have become cliché. Society isn't entertained by this shit anymore. Epstines Island would be a better horror story
There's different kinds of horrors.
There used to be a thread common on this board called the Horrorverse where he discussed all horror media and theorized what a universe where all these things existed would be like. It stopped being a thing for some reason.
Horrorverse threads were kinda stupid though. We should be able to have regular horror threads on Cinemaphile without trying to make it about all media then adding some stupid death battle crossover aspect to it. Weren't they also a weekly occurrence too? Kinda sucks they got shitposted to death by a death battle autist but the whole thing felt like some sort of forced general and would have eventually suffered the same fate as the off-season Spooktober threads. Remember those things?
Already preparing for halloween?
