Hot Take: there is nothing inherently wrong with this character. She just has the misfortune of being the least interesting member of her team and ending up with Zuko, who was fetishized by Zutara posters.

wow shocking
she's fine. She is raven without the powers. Just a brooding monotone teen girl.
And yes, much of the hate comes from fans who wanted her bf to frick his sister or that water bender.
I liked Mais design but i never thought too much about her
Also i kinda liked Zuko and Jin
I liked Zuko and Ty Lee. They're the perfect opposites attract types and that episode when she hit him with the "I know you" did it for me
Zuko and Ty Lee would've been brilliant. The whole "I love Zuko more than I fear you" line that Mai had would've been way more impactful if it was Ty Lee who said it (considering she's the one obviously terrified of Azula).
I think a big problem people have with Mai is that she's largely a satellite character for Zuko, so it could be that Ty Lee would suffer the same fate in that parallel timeline.
Don’t worry they canonically break up in the comics and zuko ends up marrying a completely different chick so no body wins!
it's ok to have characters without any depth. ty lee for instance didn't really need depth. but mai was paired up with one of the main characters, so she needed a little more fleshing out for sure.
I don't think season 3 had room for this
It did, but only if they removed the entire Day of Black Sun plotline (which would have required rewriting some bits of season 2). That entire sequence was a waste of time except for getting Zuko to leave.
Showing a plan that failed was an interesting narrative decision.
Season 3 would have been much better if it was split into 2 and both expanded into full seasons with more episodes to flesh out some things. The multiparter in the middle of the season already feels like a season finale anyway.
It would have been fine as one or two episodes, the problem was the amount of build-up to it. I also don't think that the actual two-parter is all that interesting, not many moments that stick out to me besides that one part where Azula jumps over Sokka.
S3 is a bit poorly paced. There's a reason why everyone talks about the latter half of the season plus the beach episode.
I actually though that both she and Ty Lee had interesting personalities. Obviously they are not main characters, but you can see that they have their own inner depth.
>Azula: proud, autistic sigma female
>Mai: serious, reticent, somewhat gloomy girl
>Ty Lee: a radiant, joyful and good natured girl
Mai looks like a horse.
Depends on the frame. She's ugly sometimes and other times she's honestly quite pretty and has bedroom eyes. The fact her animation is so inconsistent is the issue.
Case in point. She's fine here.
Horse...
Nay.
>neigh
would ride
I like Mai's design; its a nice contrast to the more round faced Tai Lee
I still think Tai Lee was an air bender descendent. While he chi was dormant, her physicality was next level, she's able to jump like 10 ft.
She has small eyes and a long mid face, VERY easy to accidentally uglify her with proportions like that.
She has a sexy voice
I guess you just made me realise why there is so little good art of Mai.
I think she is beuatiful but most art goes so off model with her face to the point she doesn't look like herself, or is just plain ugly. Meanwhile there is plenty of art for all other girls that look spot on with the series.
I like this Aang x Mai fic on fanfiction.net
Weird ship, but I'm interested.

Kino ship.
I wish they gave her more to do. Mai had the potential to be the voice of sanity for Azula but they repeatedly pointed out the various ways Azula tormented her followers
That flashback to when they were kids pretty much sealed the deal
She's my favorite girl out of Azula's group, both design and personality. I do wish she had more attention given to her.
People hated her?
online autists hated her
Mostly shippers who see her as a barrier to their fanfics.
I have never had any issues with Mai and don't understand why there are people who dislike her.
The comics disagree.
She has a couple issues.
1. She's on a kid's show so she can't so much as graze anyone with her sharp projectiles. She can only pin people's clothes, or miss. This makes her less of a threat than Ty Lee with her chi blocking.
2. Since she's not with Zuko with most of the show, we only see their relationship in a handful of moments, and most of them are tainted by Zuko's angst resulting from his character arc.
She's not a "bad" character, she doesn't actively detract from any scene she's in, she's just not a great character. Compared to Zuko, Azula, and Ty Lee, she's just kinda there.
Mai and Ty Lee needed more accountability for their actions when hanging out with Azula
I liked her because she was sort of the straight man of Azula’s group. She didn’t really give a shit and was your run of the mill moody teen. I don’t really see why people get so upset about her.
Threads like this make me realise how much of the bullshit said here is just the same few homosexuals who can't shut up.
She needs more lewds.
No because that brings demons.
She was my favorite when the show was airing
She's a whiny b***h that only cares about herself
Thats a lot of characters in Avatar and some of those are ugly ass dudes, your point?
Yes.
She's ugly.
Mai is boring when you're a kid and relatable when you're an adult
She's not just the least interesting, she's boring. Even Suki is more interesting than her and she's just a confident warrior girl.
Surface level she's not as interesting or charismatic as any other character, you can fix this with a bit of focus, season 3 kind of rushed it all though. People shit on her in the beach episode but it's like the perfect couple fight, Zuko tries but he fails and she's not impressed which is her being a little shit then immediately Zuko starts acting like an ass at the party. The real issues biting at each other gets resolved at the fire "I wish you would react or act out more and give me something to work with" vs "Why are you such an angsty angry b***h around me 24/7?". Works fine, would work way fricking better with a bit of set up of them having issues in episodes previous. Azula's breakdown if it was slower and not as sudden and developed over episodes till the finale where she's left behind and THAT causes her to fall completely off the deep end it works way better. Ty Lee is pretty much fine, defining character moment as the bubbly but intimidated character who betrays Azula and stands up for herself since her identity crisis by this point isn't exactly plausible to be resolved.
TL;DR her development is tied to Zuko which is fine if they focused more on it, they don't though just like other things in S3 that would've been better with a bit more time devoted to set the moment up.
I like her personality. And she probably tight and athletic under those robes
Azula uses her to vicariously seduce her brother.
