Braavos never defied Valyria. The city remained closed off from the rest of the world, cowering in terror, until the Doom of Valyria. Only then did they feel ballsy enough to make their existence known.
They did successfully resist Volantene imperialistic ambitions, which is impressive enough.
unironically there should have at least been attempts to plunder it like the other free cities, but Gurm made sure this would never happen by giving them protagonist powers and army of faceless super assassins that teleport behind you that is both super secretive while everyone is still scared to death of it. Its the location equivalent of characters like dark star with untouchable plot armor jsut because until the fat frick changes his mind again. They benefit greatly from being poorly defined for if Bravos was actually properly explored it would once again his shoddy worldbuilding

I think it's more that the rumors would have some benefits in addition to the obvious drawbacks. Also, she was fricked if she stayed married to Laenor because he didn't have the political savvy or the connections to keep her alive during the inevitable power struggle.
