in a franchise you always have to ask
    >what was the movie released right before
eg, TLJ only made so much money because TFA was well received

Captain Marvel was released a month before Endgame, and Disney shills were broadcasting online that it was necessary viewing to understand Endgame, and that if you didn't watch Captain Marvel you would be totally lost watching Endgame and have your Endgame movie experience ruined.

Nobody actually said it was essential viewing lol

I worked in a movie theatre when Captain Marvel came out. Every one I worked with was a Marvel obsessed dweeb and that was their take before Captain Marvel was released. They were all speculating on what the movie would be about and how it would tie into Endgame because they knew Captain Marvel was going to be necessary for the Endgame plot. It literally was billed that way to audiences. Stupid fricking zoomer. Just because it wasn't shilled like that on Cinemaphile doesn't mean it was the same way in the real world. Go touch grass homosexual.

TLJ actually held the record for worst performing sequel of all time, it made 700 million less than TFA. The Marvels shattered it though, so congrats to them.

Disney inflated first captain marvel film box office because was during the deal with Fox. If the box office was bad, Disney would had less power and Fox would have asked for more money because of risks with the merging.

Absolute peak of the MCU story wise at the time. The hype was absolutely insane. The Marvels was promoted piss-poorly, especially after being pushed back to a late Fall release.

the marvels released at the time of captain marvel would also make around a billie. Analogically, captain marvel released today would flop like a motherfricker

Audiences didn't have any idea Captain Marvel would be as unappealing as it was. They also didn't know Brie would be insufferable and box office poison.
They knew when The Marvels came out and avoided it.
