You guys ever seen Spartacus (1960) with Kirk Douglas? It's really good. If you're a fan of Gladiator and HBO's Rome, you would like it. I watched it for the first time the other night.
It's alright. It's dated though. Not one of Kubrick's better films but absolutely indicative of his skill considering its scale and awe despite Kubrick's age and the way the studio butchered the film.
The story of how he clashed with the cinematographer is also one of my favourite Hollywood stories
>Kubrick clashed with the Spartacus cinematographer?
Yeah. Basically, Kubrick was this young kid brought on to direct by Douglas. The DP was an old guy with decades of experience.
Kubrick had his very specific autistic vision of how the film should look. The dp wanted to do it the same way he'd done every film. So they kept arguing as Kubrick kept trying to make the dp do what he wanted.
The dp eventually relented but said Kubrick was an idiot and the film would look shit. He then went on to win the only oscar of his entire career for that film.
It's definitely of its time. It's beautifully shot. The gladiator fights are really good. I can't tell if Kirk Douglas was a good actor or not. He's definitely from a different generation and style of acting. He was okay but didn't blow me away or anything. I can see why Laurence Olivier was so well regarded. He was great as Crassus. Peter Ustinov as the gladiator school owner had a much more natural style of acting like you would see from Brando and would slowly develop in the later 60s and into the 70s.
Absolute kino.
But it'll be cool to hate on it and everyone will jizz themselves whining about how historically inaccurate it is and complaining that it's not a slow burn a24 drama
Half the characters will be black, there will be a STRONK WAMEN that outwits le bad masculine male and the main character will either be a massive homosexual or a Black person.
according to imdb Crowe is not in it ? But I see Derek Jacobi is back to play Gracchus. Glad to see he is still around since most old timers his age have passed.
Kino, hopefully it'll spawn a Gladiatorverse
So.. Spartacus?
No, something good, not gay interracial porn billed as a show
Season 1 and the prequel season are absolute kino.
Shame the lead actor died RIP
wait, are you implying gay interracial porn ISN'T good?

Kubrick clashed with the Spartacus cinematographer? What I know is that Kirk Douglas ended up hating Kubrick to death after filming the movie.

I'm Spartacus!
I've never actually seen the movie.
At least the Colosseum and the surrounding areas won't be (fully) CGI, Mr. Satan! They're being built as we speak on Malta.
For me the most pleasant surprise was Tony Curtis' Antoninus. An impactful performance from an actor who was like 20th in the billings.
At first I thought his accent was really jarring, but he seemed to tone it down as the film went on. His role was good.
Kino
NEWSFLASH they didnt have PERMS in ANCIENT ROME
Absolute kino.

As bad as all the other garbage Scott made in the last 30 years so absolute garbage of the highest degree.
what would it even be about? the year of the five emperors? septimius severus?
Scott has lost his mind

>tfw Crowe said he should get paid despite not being in the movie as he gets asked so many questions about it regardless
lol did he?
>What we do in life echoes in eternity
The original was better.
I reckon it’s going to be really good which will allow him to make another three or four shitty firms
I want Roman political intrigue, not this...
Curious to see how Paul Mescal will perform in this. He does great at Dramas/Romance, wonder how he does in a more Action/Thriller role
I expect 1000% more blacks
>someone how…commodus has returned
