They do this in basic training to break down your civilian personality. You are supposed to be offended to the point that you decide it's better not to act out of line. Just because it looks like a stronger man is trying to dominate you doesn't mean it has to be explicitly homosexual. Just because the actor is homosexual in real life does not mean it is specifically homosexual. Just because men sign up to join the armed forces to be yelled at by men so they can cower in submission does make it homosexual. Just because you have pent up feelings of shock and anger and excess chemical-hormonal reactions from the whole experience and have to routinely relieve your excess semen in the bathroom stalls when no one is paying attention does not make any of it homosexual.
I recently learned that Tim Colceri was originally casted as Sgt Hartman. Kubrick ultimately made the right decision going with Ermey, but I don't think he Colceri would have been bad. He has other drill sergeant roles that are decent.
If I remember right the guy who played the drill srg also really did have a drill instructor experience from the military. On set he just dressed up in his old uniform and started barking orders to the crew like he was commanding an unit. That is what got Kubricks attention and lead him to his new role.
One time I weighed out a metal bar to be roughly the same weight as an M60 and was able to pretty comfortable LARP through the bush in pseudo-nam gear with it for a good 12 hours, so yeah I reckon I could walk the walk.

Being in the army exposes you to a lot of banter. It's a bunch of young men with a lot of free time.

At least he still got a memorable role in the film. Everybody loves Get Some Guy.
