Hard to say. The movie is notable for having pretty much all period appropriate dialogue and depictions of shipboard life. Much of the movie plays out like a slice of life on a British warship.
Although the events depicted didn't actually take place, it is very historically authentic.
For me, I didn't know much of that time period, but the movie got me into learning more about the British Navy and the Napoleonic era.
You might find the movie to be slow, or you'll be so immersed that it'll fly by.
I saw it when it first came out in the theatres as a teenager and I liked it.
Then I never saw it again for like 20 years and rewatched it during the pandemic. Still liked it, but I grew the love the movie upon rewatch. There are a bunch of little moments and dialogue you might not pick up on the first watch, and though not necessary for the story, it does add to the whole atmosphere.
This is a 10/10 kino but I have a complaint and, yes you guessed it right, it's the fricking weevil scene.
I'm an ESL and I always thought that "weevils" referred to the bread they were eating. It didn't help that, in the closeup of the plates, the bread is way bigger than the tiny insects that can barely be seen. Pic VERY related.
A few years back, I went to the the UK and wanted to get some bread. I went to the bakery and saw some "weevils", which I had never tried in my life. I said to the baker behind the counter: "I will get a weevil please. And I am sorry I don't follow British custom, but I don't want the lesser but the bigger of them all *wink wink*. I saw the look of hate in the baker's eye and then he told me that there were no weevils in his store, to stop taking the piss, and that I should get out of his store before he beat the shit out of me.
Ha that's a funny catch. By having two pieces of bread they made it possible to confuse the weevils with bread. They shouldve put one pieces of bread on the plate, or multiple smaller pieces of bread.
They really should make an Aubrey--Maturin television series based on the books. You could do a book per season (or more even) and have a lot of really good content since there are like 20 novels of material. As long as it has production value like Master and Commander, the Hornblower tv movies, or maybe even Black Sails it would have a ton of potential.
Not sure who I would cast as Jack or Stephen though.
What was the point of the Brazilian girl?
I was thinking about it, and I think the reason he didn't bring her along was to keep her safe. If they lost a battle she would've been raped etc.
OR
It was so that he could stay focused, and continue being a present leader for his men
What do you all think?
Obviously the second, why the hell would he take a girl away from her family and put her on a ship full of men who spend the vast majority of their time away from women? Either you didn't think this through or you have a unique view of the morality of the average sailor.
Aside from physical differences one of the biggest reasons behind separating women from combat units is that they frick up the entire dynamic of a group of men. A woman in an isolated location such as a ship, with a group of aggressive men, would be at best fought over and at worst use your imagination.
Soundtrack was da shit. check out The Bounty if you like M&C. Mel Gibson rallies the ship's crew to overthrow their captain because he won't let them frick the native island chicks. After they take over the ship they go island hopping cruising for chicks until they find the island again and turn it into Frick Island. The island was so remote and the crew was so horny the people who live there til this day are all descended from Mel Gibson.
I think it's one of the best movies ever made. I've watched it with a few girls and they've all enjoyed it, but then I don't date "live laugh love" morons. My first girlfriend was fully into all kinds of fighting sail stuff already and was a huge fan.
weavles
So was the kid actually cursed?
they got wind as soon as they killed him lol
Yes, in fact, just right now there's a Jonah in this thread. He be marked by repeating digits...
well I wouldn't know
I hope it's not me
couldn't be me
Couldn't be me!
Not me
Grim.
*salute
Forethought and care.
I exceeded my posting orders long ago.
SAFE AND SOUND AT HOME AGAIN, LET THE WATERS ROAR, JACK!
No women.
This movie should have at least two sequels and have inspired a genre. Shame.
That sequence in the Galapagos always gets me.
There were a couple, but they weren't important and had no lines. Just like it should be.
the hubby was out so i invited my girlfriends over for movie night to watch this and OMG... it was so boring!!! i was so embarrassed lol
Attention to detail and sea men.
Memes
you fricking Black person
Jonah!!!!
GTFO JONAH
How can it be perfect when women don't understand it?
You know the answer: Literally ZERO(0) woman
will I like this if I like boats but have zero idea how the navy works? my favorite boatkino is the first potc

2 weeks?
2 weeks what?
> little moments and dialogue you might not pick up on the first watch
Yeah sure. I'm not sure how this relates to my post though
It's a great movie about the everyday horrors sailors were exposed to and a cool adventure story besides
>ends before the climactic fight with cool explosions
That was just cruel. Way to turn a 10/10 into a 7/10.
Yeah why on Earth would you use your imagination
If i wanted to use my imagination I'd just read the book the film's based on
Pre-woke movies all seem good these days

Oh it's probably ships biscuit, aka hardtack.
No speaking female roles
we should have gotten a trilogy. this was prime trilogy material but all we got was 1.
Soi: the movie.
The perfect masterpiece for anyone who has never done any serious boating.
Only unrealistic thing was that they weren't raping the boy constantly like what really happens in those ships.
I wanna see the boat movie.
>a whole lot of Swash but very little Buckling
What did she mean by this?
They never undid their belt buckles for some butt sex.
What's wrong with making ships out of matchsticks? I actually hate women so much it's unreal.
>is not a homosexual love story, or at least its not intended to be
lmao that got a kek out of me. Women can be funny sometimes.
Yeah that was a pretty good burn.

Oceans are now battlefields lads
Not a single woman or minority cast
There was a woman in the scene where they picked up supplies off of Brazil and there was at least two black shipmates.
Not a single Black person in sight
What about this guy? We see him assisting Killick with cooking the captain's meals.

Hmm point I didn't consider the other sailors. Probably would've been a mutiny.

Never a tune you could dance to
>a white European film like this will never be made again without 'diversity'

Ships of wood and men of iron.
> Tugger!
