I think the difference is that Heartstopper's drama is either straightforward baby gay angst or unrelated young person issues, depending on where you are in the story. The two main characters are stock but in such a broad way that it's hard to make it a fetish. They're also not particularly nice to look at.
Combine all this and it gets more of a pass from gay men, though I've seen initial hesitation about it.
Boyfriends, on the other hand, comes across as a lot more "look at the gays! [and the troony i've included as if that would ever be tolerated by actual gay men in a sexual relationship]"
