Mandy is fine, just underwhelming compared to BtBR
AFAIK Cosmatos' problem was always trouble finding financing, he made BtBR on residuals from Tombstone DVDs and had to film Mandy in fricking Belgium for lack of funding.
BTBR definitely has the better atmosphere and soundtrack, but Mandy tells much more of a cohesive story. I dont just mean how easily you can follow it, I mean it feels like a more complete vision. BTBR feels very slapped together, I mean what the frick are those last 15 minutes?
yes mandy is a little reddity with its neon and le nick cage, but panos' hand over the whole thing feels much stronger the entire run time, as opposed to rainbow where it drifts in and out
>Visually appealing
PINK PURPLE AND ORANGE GELS AND GOBOS EVERYWHERE IT’S MORE ARTISTIC YOU WOULDN’T UNDERSTAND
Style is substance. Film is a visual media. Are you complaining that paintings are too pretty to look at? Tard
>Film is a visual media
Firstly, ‘media’ is plural, the correct word is the singular ‘medium’.
Secondly, film is a multisensate medium, also using sound and on occasion gimmicks like electric currents (The Tingler) or scratch and sniff cards (Polyester ‘in videodorama’).
Thirdly, garish (or excessively desaturated) colors, soulless brutalist sets and agonisingly dull and drawn-out scenes where actors stare at each other intently are still part of the visual milieu but add nothing of value other than artistic pretension.
Cosmatos, Refn, and Villeneuve are the stormtroopers of a worthless and indulgent film aesthetic that hides a paucity of human understanding. All three create movies ideal for autistic masturbators, long on visual interest (perhaps) but short on emotional depth and nuance.
All of this is just my opinion of course, I don’t expect to change any minds ITT.
>roommate keeps touting this as the greatest scifi/horror ever >I love that shit so agree to watch it >it's literally nothing
I mean yeah it looked beautiful and had great atmosphere but the plot was both simple as hell and vague. It felt like a really great proof of concept or demo reel rather than an actual movie.
No offense, but you just can't handle slow movies - although BtBR is a bit too slow even for an experienced viewer.
If you're ever in a mood and prepared for a meditative experience, try giving it a rewatch.
Mandy wasn't bad, it just recycled too much from BtBR. He also diluted himself somewhat to appeal to the mainstream mouthbreathers who cried about the end of BtBR being a let down.
Beyond the black rainbow is my favorite movie to watch late at night when I’m half asleep
I know it is amazing how much better he got.

Finally something to look forward to
Any info on this apart from the announcement and IMDB synopsis?
Dis gun b gud
Nice. If only he made a film more often than every 8 years or some shit
They still haven't peaked to what horror they could make aesthetically. BtBR is at the top with really a low budget.
mandy is a better film overall

Yes. Btbr is the greatest boring movie of all time.
How have these guys not sued Stranger Things yet?
Oh look another style over substance Refn wannabe, wunderbar.
>NOOO! YOU CAN'T HAVE A VISUALLY APPEALING MOVIE!
Read a book, homosexual.

You're a sad caricature.

Cosmatos is a god tier director
Should've cast him in Mandy instead of le meme Cage
Cage was great
Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie should do a project with Panos Cosmatos.
love evil Carl Sagan
Aids Christian Bale
i'm glad that the movie has a lasting legacy in this meme
His episode in Del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities was really fun btw, check it out!
the rest of the anthology is garbage tho, don't watch
The Viewing and The Autopsy were kino
Graveyard Rats and The Outside were good
The rest was trash
