Because this is a direct answer to shows like NWBHG. Those shows trick you into thinking it's going to be funny talking animals but then it's Gen X malaise and existential depression. This show has candy colored main characters doing shit that doesn't make sense but dammit, they just want to make you smile. Mission accomplished.

That's not an acronym, it's an initialism. An acronym is pronounced as if it were a word, like NASA, whereas an initialism is where the individual letters are pronounced, like DNA.

Because Bojack Horseman (and Rick and Morty after the "Rick is le suicidal" episode) wants you to buy into the stupid melodrama and take it seriously.
This show doesn't do that. It takes from the Seinfeld/Larry David mantra -No hugging, no learning-. There's no moments where the audience is legitimately meant to go "AWW".
Once it does otherwise, I'm out.

Uh, no, there's definitely moments that are intentionally heartwarming, like the ending of the Brother's Egg episode, Pim hugging Charlie after he gets resurrected in the Christmas episode, the Shrimp guy finding love, Mr. Boss reforming the Frowning Friends etc. Even if some of those moments get undermined by humor or violence, there's still a genuine heart to the show that's rare for an [as] comedy

Partly because Smiling Friends actually makes use of its medium and understands that it's a cartoon.
Bojak has no value beyond its dialogue. Which is why no one actually posts visuals from the show, all of them look like crap.
Hence, "Normal words but horse guy."

Criticisms about Bojak stem a lot of from the tone of the show dragging on too long. It's not the kind of thing that needed 3 seasons.

Probably because Bojack was always trying to act like it was this deep mature show that you should take seriously, when in the end it’s about rich people being sad oh boo who gives a shit. While smiling friends is about 2 wage slaves misadventures that isn’t suppose to be taken seriously at all.One is relatable and the other is pretentious.

      >when in the end it’s about rich people being sad oh boo who gives a shit.
That's like saying wagies have never enjoyed The Great Gatsby or Anna Karenina lol. Just because characters aren't #relatable doesn't mean a show is bad
      >Bojack was always trying to act like it was this deep mature show that you should take seriously
Did you watch the show? Be honest.

Because the other show is an Oscar bait show trying to win an Emmy with the veneer of being an adult comedy show (actually a tragicomedy) about its "realistic takes on the human condition". The show would be so utterly trite and at its worst pretentious if it weren't animated.

    >How come Bojack Horseman got mocked for "grounded/relatively normal dialogue with cartoon characters!"
    It didn't really.
An ancient shitty show made bad joke #8112317 and an autist started spamming it. The vast majority of people who watched the show don't care.
In terms of comparing Bojack to Smiling Friends, SF is much wackier on average. Bojack has plenty of sincere moments whereas SF is much more ironic and silly, when it does try to be serious it falls flat.

Smiling friends doesn't under cut its humor by trying to give you an emotional ballslap several times a season. The "normal words" used in smiling friends are usually just random character breaks to contrast the general absurdity.

bojack: this character is toxic!!!! you must hate this character cause he is a fricking piece of shit with no redeemable qualities however we'll also make him relatable and ostracize the fanbase for finding him relatable in the slightest
smiling friends: this character isn't necessarily bad they're just aimless and need some direction in life

for the record i like both shows but this is the main difference for me. bojack writers seem to love deconstructing why their characters are shitty while smiling friends is about uplifting people and offering them advice

Other anons get it, it's Hollywood/LA bullshit that never tries to make Bojack relatable. The writers want you to feel sorry for a washed-up Hollywood actor, but you never feel sorry for him because he does unfunny moronic shit that only Hollywood people do. It's not escapism either, because who the hell wants to be a suicidal, depressed, washed-up Hollywood actor?

Smiling Friends works because it's simple, episodic comedy that the audience can relate to- they're wagies living simple, comfy lives that play the straight man to the weird world around them. The spastic animation heavily contrasts the grounded dialogue for comedy- and that's all it needs to do. It's not complex.

Bojack has an actual plot that occasional realistic diatribes take away from. Jokes in that show tend to serve the story. SF is a much more gag driven show with a sillier tone where the realistic dialogue works to break up the wackier moments and contrast them. And I've never heard anyone really b***h about the normal sounding dialogue in Bojack aside from people on this board posting that single Family Guy joke.
