How come nightmares and night terrors are popular with fanart? Almost every fandom that I seen has a dramatic fanart of a character going through it, then revealing some past trauma to the audience.

Most of this is just shipping art where one character wakes up from a nightmare and the other one comforts them. The author of course self-inserting into the character being comforted because EVERYONE IN THE FRICKING WORLD WANTS THE OTHER PARTY TO PUT IN ALL THE EFFORT IN A RELATIONSHIP
