>Sorry super intelligence isn’t a super power bro
Brainlet take
The Blood and Powder book series is kinda like that. Privileged and depraved wizards pull the strings of society until gunpowder (and minor gunpowder-related magic) allows them to be picked off from a distance. The balance shift is one reason they get their version of the French revolution
That does sound good, but
makes me second guess it. Can we get a second opinion?
I'm getting Gods of Blood and Powder every time I search that up. Is that the same thing? By what I've seen of it it also seems to be the follow up to his Powder Mage stuff.
The Blood and Po-
Frick you got there first.
Still; I won't blame you for having good taste.
I read the 1st few chapters and it didn't make a good first impression. It felt like it really wanted you to know that it was a SUPER SERIOUS GRIMDARK book for MATURE audiences, but instead it came off as intensely edgy as a teenage furries AMV. Does it get better? I did think the setting had potential, but I couldn't stomach the edge.
One of my main thoughts when reading Harry Potter as a kid was "what if someone had a gun?".
They mention guns in Harry Potter.
Basically the way wizards describe them if memory serves was very difficult to defend against. "Metal wands that shoot death."
>Basically the way wizards describe them if memory serves was very difficult to defend against. "Metal wands that shoot death."
You know what they say
"God created man, but Samuel Colt made them equal"
That's about the size of it, yeah.
Apparently there’s only like 3000 wizards in England, so one could do a lot of damage
Anon, early guns fricking suck, you aren't soloing a entire civilization no matter if is fantasy or real life. At best you kill some guys then other people with special power hunt you down for your gun
Anon it's just a contrived power fantasy, let them have it.
>noooooo I know how to mix potassium nitrate, charcoal, and sulfur so I could totally make a FN FAL with medieval tools!
Feels like a crossbow would do the same and earlier. There's a reason they were banned in several countries, knights don't like peasants being able to kill them that easily
>peasants being able to afford a crossbow
>crossbows being more dangerous to knights than longbows or even other forms of war bow
lel
I don't know about cost, but bows are hard to learn to use effectively. It's why the firearm first became popular, because any rural idiot could use a gun well enough in a week of training.
Bows are hard to learn but crossbows are not. With a crossbow you don't have to use your strength to draw it while you are aiming, so you'll have all the time in the world to aim it
Well yes, that's why crossbows replaced bows in mercenary companies - they had the money to buy expensive crossbows and if one of your crossbowmen is crippled or dies it only takes two months instead of 5 years to replace them. England became famous for its use of longbows over crossbows in large part because they were too poor to afford them but their peasants had plenty of time to practice the long bow in the evening, which came in handy at Agincourt where after a rain that soaked the far more difficult to unstring crossbows of the mercenaries the French employed, the easily unstrung and sheltered English longbows even more massively outranged them than usual, resulting in the mercs quitting the field since money is worthless if you're too dead to spend it. The French noble knights in their full plate and on fine war horses fared little better since the mud bound them up long enough for the longbows to do their work - while their plate armor was phenomenal protection it was thick enough to defeat the far more common crossbow bolts of their usual enemies, not the ~30% more powerful longbow arrows fired at ~6x the rate of a crossbow.
POOCHADS RISE UP!

This is the implied future outcome of the wheel of time world actually.
I’m surprised people don’t talk much about how in Harry Potter is confirmed Voldemort was set to fail, because human outnumbered and have far superior weapons
Guns are shit against magic force fields and invulnerability
Guns are great against everything because noone human can erect forcefields fast enough to react and we have guns that can penetrate concrete
Eh depends on the magic, I could see some gay doing the playground thing of going
>Nuuh MY force field is always active, never tires me out and can block a tungsten spear launched from low orbit
Now this is cope. Nobody is soloing Star vs. with a glock
Star can't react to a snipershot she can't even hear. Perks of being faster than the sound barrier
how fast can she say "Magic Pony Unicorn Tsunami" in the time it takes me to pull a trigger?
Less common than it is in anime
Sounds like Naruto. He's supposedly an underdog but literally has a fricking god bound to him
And Black Clover, where the only nonmagic normie on earth actually has the most broken power because a demon is bound to him, and My Hero Academia, where a one-in-a-million nonsuperpowered teenager exists then gets handed the most powerful ability in the canon instead of a billion gazillion morbillion much more worthy and hardworking candidates some of whom trained to literal insanity to surpass that ability’s power - as well as 8 other broken superpowers when everyone else just has 1 shitty power, and DBZ, where Goku leaves morons like Krillin behind because Goku is actually a superpowered alien from another world while Krillin’s just a butt-nothing human
Krillin held back Goku's Kamehameha while goku was in blue also krillin stopped training Goku does it every day even when he dies so yeah he'd be stronger
He’s stronger because Goku is a Saiyan and Krillin is not. No matter what Krillin does or how much he trains he’ll never be able to achieve any form of Super Saiyan because unlike Goku he wasn’t born into it
Krillin was stronger than Goku for a bit in dragon ball and Goku has lost to humans before tien and Jackie Chun beside Goku isn't unbeatable he's lost plenty of times
Goku is unbeatable to any human once he gets his Super Saiyan forms, which are available to him and to no human ever for one and one reason only:
Goku is a saiyan, humans are not saiyans. Hard work means nothing for any human because they can't become Super Saiyan. Goku rises above humans because he was born privileged with this ability they are incapable of no matter how hard they try.
>my point, left still unrebutted
Humans in Dragon Ball canonically can't even beat Goku with Super Saiyan 1, no matter how hard they train. Let alone now that Saiyans have more than 20 successive Super Saiyan forms available to them solely because they were born lucky like Goku, meanwhile the humans can't even grasp the power of SS1, because they were born less lucky than Goku.
Tien btfo every one else pre hyperbolic time chamber by holding back cell in his 2nd form piccolo couldn't do that shit after fusing with kami also Goku isn't special going super Saiyan isn't some grand achievement post cell saga and cyborg 17 and 18 are technically human and fricked the z warriors up
Tien isn't human, he's a descendant of the Triclops race, lol. Imagine not knowing anything about the series you yourself are desperately trying to defend.
And 17 and 18 are enhanced cyborgs, not humans. They didn't work for their powers, because no amount of work puts a human comparable to Super Saiyans in the DBZ canon.
You can only be born lucky, like Goku was. Be borna. regular human and it's impossible to reach those powerlevels because you're not as privelidged from birth as Goku canonically was.
Goku had a power level of like 10 when he was born and tien is human just some shitty inbred human/mutant not some triclops that's a lie
And Goku's power level went beyond what any human could possibly achieve no matter how hard they trained solely and for no other reason than because Goku was born with the power of Super Saiyans.
>"The Triclops[1] (三つ目人 Mitsume-jin, "Three-Eyed People") is an ancient group of three-eyed aliens from which Tien Shinhan is descended."
Cope.
>Wiki
Wow that's accurate
You could also watch the show, you know, where he grows arms from his back and splits into 4 clones like that species is known for doing, or better yet read Daizenshuu 4 where it says in clear sentences that Tien is a triclops who got his triclops powers and triclops eye from the fact he is not a human but a triclops.
Or you could just continue bawling about the canon fact Goku is only powerful because he was born luckier than everyone. Either works.
Silly anon, nobody watches the original Dragon Ball.
Goku isn't the only Saiyan tho nothing he does is exclusive to him not even ultra instinct since other people can do it
It is exclusive to Goku amongst humans. No human can do it, only Saiyans, something Goku was BORN into.
He's naturally stronger than all humans. No matter how hard a human trains they can't ever surpass the Super Saiyan form that is available to Goku for being born a saiyan.
Being born less lucky than most saiyans doesn't disclude the fact Goku was born far, far luckier than any human to ever exist.
Goku might be naturally stronger than most humans by virtue of being a Saiyan, but he was on Earth to start with because his race's quasi-Spartan society judged him at birth to be a bottom class weakling unfit to be raised among them as a fellow warrior. That's why they stuffed him in a pod with one clean diaper and shot him into space to conquer a lesser people or starve to death whichever came first, who cares?
He eventually becomes who he is by working for it and going beyond his originally estimated potential. Compare him with Vegeta who is the heir to the Saiyan throne and is now a hopeless jobber 90% of the time
Saiyan infants aren't worthless, they're sent to conquerable worlds because the full moon will turn them into 20 story tall King Kongs that shoot lasers and berserk all night. Unless the world receiving a saiyan baby kills all strangle aliens on sight they're doomed, and everyone loves cuddly Lil babies.
>Goku was born with the PL of a fit full-grown man
goddamn
I remember TFS said they deliberately made this part more hype than in the original because it was the last time a human accomplished anything in Z.
To be fair Goku is also the son of two trash tier Saiyan goons but he's managed to eclipse prodigies, mutants and galactic warlords through hard work and dedication. If you compare him to humans yes he fits but against the wider universe he bucks the trend
You missed the point of the comic. Asta and Deku are still lower class "poo people" however they were able demonstrate that they were also worthy of having abilities reserved for the upper class
Yes, both of them are gifted with amazing powers compared to the other people but it had nothing to do with their birth
Goku is on the edge because hedoes surpass humanity but he's also the lowest form of Saiyan
Yuno was born the son of the king, Asta was born with a magic demon giving him a uniquely advantageous power to everyone else, Deku was literally handed his power for doing nothing.
Deku was handed his power for his attempted heroic actions, even if they don't strike US as making him "worthy" of them they did to the character in universe in a position to make that decision.
The end result is similar but it's still a very different moral from being BORN special.
>it's still a very different moral from being BORN special.
true, especially since him being born "special" put him on the lowest social rung of society.
Have I missed something recently? Asta wasn't born with a demon, he was sealed inside the grimoire that Asta eventually obtained. Their meeting was by chance despite the odds that he would meet the son of the woman who put him there in the first place.
Deku was given AFO because he showed All Might he had a heroic spirit despite not having powers. Nothing to do with his birth.
Yuno is an intentional example to contrast with Asta.
Technically Dragon Ball doesn't fit. It's sad the normal humans get power crept. But there's literally nothing special about Goku when it comes to being a saiyan. Goku is strong because he is go. He's not a royal purebreed like Vegeta. He doesn't have a legendary recessive gene like Broly. He's not an amalgamation which includes earth's god like Piccolo. He's just a regular saiyan's son. He got the super special forms first, but the only explanation we have for that is talent and hard work.
Say what you will about how shit it makes him a father and husband but Goku also never stops training and never stops improving that's like the one character trait he's retained from 30+ years, four plus series and two separate interpretations of the character
Isn’t that why Vigilantes exists? Crawler is just some college student who works a wagie job but does volunteer hero work since he loves it but missed his shot at UA because he chose to save someone.
Fricking Koichi
Just a slidy boi gradually, fight by fight, learning from friends and foes alike and honning his power into a sniper concussive blast speedster almost untouchable rocketman
From being the bug underneath people's feet to soaring above the masses. God damnit, how could a side manga's protagonist have such a kino journey
I think the artificial limit of not being allowed to outshine or compete with the main comic allows for a little more creativity.
This is specifically about a society that's divided into aristocrats and peasants, not just a society where some people have special powers.
Black Clover IS divided into aristocrats and peasants. Aristocrats have the most powerful magic and peasants have the worst. Then here's the two main characters who have ridiculously strong powers for peasants and it turns out it's because one was born with a Demon inside his soul from when he was a baby and the other is literally the son of the King so they were never disadvantaged to begin with.
Or are you just interpreting it that way because you are anxious to blame Japan for a Western trope? I've heard of this trope in a Western context before (and the comic is also commenting on it), but never in a Japanese context. In all the years I've seen people talk about battle shounen, this topic has never come up. Yet somehow it's supposed to be a central element of the genre.
you clearly have not read black clover.
man you could ignore that and there'd still be a long list of bullshit
>son of the 4th
>reincarnation of the son of the sage of the 6 paths
>one of the last members of a clan with a freakishly huge chakra pool
don't forget
>godfather and personal trainer is a legendary warrior
Don't forget the multiple hokages who looked after him and gave him special treatment and gave him get out of jail free cards
You may as well give up if you don't have a spirit slave or a bloodline trait
In the case of Black Clover, the protagonist can only use the demonic anti-magic because he's a totally magic deprived turbo normies. Anyone else would have their soul sapped whenever they tried to use it.
Naruto is fricking shit. Straight up and down shit. Everything after the Chuunin Exams should just be fricking ignored, it's garbage. Kishimoto is a terrible fricking writer and his messages are absolute horseshit.
Not as bad a Blach with Ichigo's half hollow, half shinigami, half quincy and fullbringer abilities.
I can't immediately think of any anime like this.
Bleach fits, more or less
Then you don't watch fighting or shonen anime
Which is good I'm very jealous of your purity
Dragon Ball.
Does Dragon Ball feature a societal structure where people with powers are the ruling aristocratic elite while everyone else may as well be a slave?
Well no but the saiyans might as well be the top dogs on their universe, still doesn't really fit the story since Goku isn't some reincarnated alien messiah just an alien who trained hard and managed to survive long enough to break his limit and become blonde and super powerful.
>the saiyans might as well be the top dogs on their universe
Theoretically but as we've seen on average there are plenty of aliens with strength on tier with them at least at first baring wide spread SS transformations and zenkai boosts
most talented race in the DB universe is arguably Frieza's through
And yet they die to human destructo disc techniques if they don't see them coming/take them seriously
For that matter the transformers are pretty powerful too. Original DB had a rabbit that could turn people into carrots with a touch, and Buu turned people into candy. Magic is scary yo
Dont forget, some old dude in the lab made robots that are leagues stronger than freeza.
Actually Goku is now the son of the legendary super saiyan, Bardock.
It's not on the same level as reincarnation like Broly, but it's still has that special blood angle.
First off, a “Legendary Super Saiyan” isn’t simply a very powerful Super Saiyan, it’s a specific type of transformation that’s exclusive to Broly and Kale.
Second, Bardock is only a Super Saiyan in non-canon shit like video games and a tv special that even Mexican DBZgays think is lame powerwanking shit.
Thirdly, even if he was supposed to canonically be a Super Saiyan, in any continuity the only time he transforms is AFTER Goku is born and being a Super Saiyan only affects your bloodline once you transform for the first time so Goku wouldn’t have gotten advantage from that shit.
>Super Saiyan only affects your bloodline once you transform for the first time so Goku wouldn’t have gotten advantage from that shit
Source on that? Cuz that would mean Goten and Trunks have super saiyan blood.
Yeah, that’s literally the reason given for why Goten and the main timeline Trunks can transform into Super at the age of 7: their dads had acquired the power of the Super Sayian before fricking their moms.
Not to mention the transformation is triggered by EXTREME anger brought on by shit like
>My best friend has been murdered right in front of me
>My father has been murdered right in front of me
>My race, my planet and my wife are about to be killed by space Hitler
>Vegeta's nearly suicidal self loathing
Most if not all Saiyan are sociopaths incapable of giving a damn enough to get that angry
Outside of the original OVA Bardok has never gone SS, and since Super Broly is the new cannon he's never gone SS at all
.Does Dragon Ball feature a societal structure where people with powers are the ruling aristocratic elite while everyone else may as well be a slave?
The most prominent super-powered race, the Saiya-jin/Saiyans, were very much like this.
No, dragon ball is a joke jrpg so iety where the president of the world is a dog and about 15 percent of the world are beastmen or flying cats or vampires.
This is what happens when you let a gag manga writer write one of the most popular action manga of all time
>where the president of the world is a dog and about 15 percent of the world are beastmen or flying cats or vampires.
Fun fact apparently all the beast men were just people fricking around with transformation drugs

Why do I keep having to repeat this question over and over again, and why is every single answer to my original post a battle shounen?
>They have a society where an aristocratic elite wields supreme power while everyone else is a powerless, slave-like peasant?
We get it, you're fricking hung up on this one detail like a goddamn autist calm your breasts homosexual

Just ignore the troll and hide his replies. He's doing it just to bait people into exchanging hot air with him.
I have not trolled anywhere. I accept your concession.
You're still going too. Why do people keep thinking that "he's still going" is an argument?

Bleach, One Piece, Naruto, YuYu Hakusho, Gundam,
Again, no.
That is the entire thesis of the early Naruto anon.
It's not really a bloodline thing in Gundam. Random fricks can be newtypes.
It's still something you're either born as or you aren't.
Also technically not true.
I know most cyber newtypes are nuts, but they aren't all.
Only space people can be newtypes, that is the entire reason why the butthole from Zeon felt like they had the right to control everything, they feel superior that everyone else, and the only one who can balance the fight on earths favor is also a space person.
The only way normies can fight newtypes is by having a good AI in their robots which is seen with the same contempt as a tool assisted speedrun or by getting some cyborg augmentations to be on par with the enemy which also gets criticized.
>Only space people can be newtypes
I know Victory isn't popular, but he main character in it is not a spacenoid, and he is a newtype.
Also being a spacenoid isn't really special in itself regardless. It's partially the result of population control and it's often depicted as a misfortune imposed upon poor people.
How do they explain him being a newtype? in the canon of Gundam newtypes is evolution to adapt to space how did he got it?
By fricking around in spaced essentially.
But the point is it's not a birthrite of spacenoids.
The implication is that random people, even among earthnoids, adapt to the turmoils of 3D navigation more quickly. Newtypes are more noticed among spacenoids because they simply have a head start adapting to space.
Correct until Gundam
There's a lot but usually it takes some time to hit, since it's a plot twist type of deal. I personally remember when Yu Yu Hakusho came with this twist out of nowhere.
Gash Bell
MC is commonly referred to as a dropout who barely gets into the tournament, later you learn his dad is the previous winner and seal the demon equivalent of a WMD into him that he can use as a spell
Pretty much any shounen battle anime. Particularly frustrating in Naruto with case of Rock Lee who was literally never able to keep pace.
>f Rock Lee who was literally never able to keep pace.
A better writer would have alowed him too, dude was on par with Shippuden Sakura strength wise WITHOUT chakra boosting and "being really fast and hitting really hard" is a power that seems to get you pretty far in Naruto considering stuff like Guy vs Madara
If he could keep up that would have shit on Guy, it took his entire life to train up to the level of the Madera fight.
It was a problem that permeated the entire series post-time skip. With the expectation of the shadow control guy who seemed to be the author's favorite, everyone got sidelined really fricking hard. There's a reason the Akatsuki fights are the most well-remembered parts of shipudden despite so much other stuff happening.
Lee's story is a weird take on OP's pic. He goes from poo person to special through hard work, but then the super specials like Naruto stand above everyone anyway.
>He goes from poo person to special through hard work
Not really, the way Naruto works is EVERYONE is capable of learning some ninja magic except for small proportion of population like Lee. As such Lee isn’t a poo person he’s more like a cripple or moron.
>EVERYONE is capable of learning some ninja magic
I always thought that was weird. Like, why isn't that standard? In real life acrobatics or boxing has little practical use outside of fun, but in Naruto ninja skills have incredible utility. Shouldn't all children at least be taught that fast travel tree jumping thing?
>fast travel tree jumping thing?
Also shit like
>Water walking
>basic medical ninjutsu
>basic physical enhancement ninjutsu
>As such Lee isn’t a poo person he’s more like a cripple or moron.
And look how far the motherfricker went with a few years of hard work
He lost his first big fight and then became wheelchair-bound for the rest of the series. But oh boy he sure did drop those weights I guess
Yeah he got bodied by a guy who was destined to be leader of his people.

I'll also say that it's some next level shit. This is REALLY bad.
Holy shit I used to watch that show in middle school. Really hated how people hyped it up just cuz S2 of snk got delayed.
I've spent the last year binging a good chunk of my library's graphic novel section.
My god, there is so much SHIT manga that people don't even talk about when doing East VS West. They are comparing shit like The Boys to Naruto without even knowing Taboo Tattoo exists.
I've read like six chapters how bad did it get
Pretty bad. Kagami has always fujobaited since day 1 and ONSgays still act surprised when he doubles down on it. But then again, they're the ones who didn't catch on to the shut writing to begin with.
I dropped it sometime before volume 10, but it was a constant cycle of:
>I'm going to kill all the vampires!
Hey, if you do that thing you'll be risking the lives of everyone, here's the safe way to-
>I'm doing the thing because I hate vampires!
Oh shit he did the thing, we're going to die
>My main character powers let me solve the problem I caused and proved I was right to do the thing.
We forgive you for doing the thing. We really did almost die, but there will be no consequences.
>I want to kill all the vampires!
That happened at least 4 times in a row.
I actually never touched the manga either, but damn I didn't know the writing was that bad. Combine that with gaybaiting and man am I surprised this series still has readers.
Gaybaiting can get you pretty damn far sometimes
>Combine that with gaybaiting
I'll also point out that the girls get naked and touch each other a lot, so that also plays a role in it. It's pandering to both sides.

>isekai is the only anime that doesn't follow this specific formula that's actually more particular to Western stories than anime
Are you being serious?
Deadly serious.
Watch more than one anime.
No, this is more prevalent in Western stories and the comic is criticizing Western stories. People just don't want to admit it.
I've watched more than you. So I know I'm right.
Delusional or dishonest bullshit. You have very obviously watched extremely little anime if you think OP's comic applies to all of them except isekai. In fact isekai is much more likely to contain that trope than other anime.
It is. Keep crying.
It's genuinely impressive that you've spent the entire thread trying and failing to be a janny and resorting to spergery when called out. You are a massive homosexual
I have not tried to be a janny or sperged out anywhere. You also haven't "called out" anything. I've dominated the thread easily from start to finish.

That homosexual spent most of the thread getting low effort trolled and it was hilarious
It's not, but you keep crying.
Definitely. But films like the Star Wars sequels and Mulan are just as guilty of this.
It all comes down to pop media being the produce and property of a wealthy, exclusive private sector of a society that is an aristocracy in all but name.
>Mulan
Really? I'm glad I never watched either version even more if they added this dumb bullshit onto the girl power narrative.
Not as-
-Oh this anon has me covered.
If it's so common then what are examples of it?
Every shounen has a society divided into an aristocratic elite at the top and oppressed slave-like peasants at the bottom?
Do you ever get tired of willfully miscontruing people's sentences to prove a point? It's called hyperbole, smartass.
Every fricking shonen ever jesus christ
What will it take to have a protagonist who has average powers and actually puts in the work to punch above their weight, instead of the so called losers who are extensively trained in Asspull No Jutsu?
One Piece and Demon Slayer are some of the biggest and highest-selling shonen of all time and both them have protags who are just some guy with no special origin (unless there's been some recent reveal in one of them that I'm way behind on?).
I dropped one piece but you're wrong about Demon Slayer his family passed down the secret frick you demon dance for generations.
Luffy has the vague power of the Will of D. Tanjiro has some special training he was indirectly given by his father but I don't think he has any special in-born gift.
>Deku was literally handed his power for doing nothing
Not even figuratively true, but you're entitled to your feeling that he didn't deserve it.
Luffy
>muh Joyboy
>muh Will of D
>muh broken devil fruit that grants him the powers of a Sun god
Thanks, Oda!
>>muh broken devil fruit that grants him the powers of a Sun god
Again, gaining powers from random luck or grace is narratively a similar result, but a totally different "moral" to the story from being born special.
There are basically three possible ways to make a Poo People character important:
Hard work, random luck, or secretly born special. OP comic is about criticizing the third, but Luffy is more the second.
I admit I forgot about the Will of D bs though.
>O my memories
>O my dance specifically made to kill demons
Come one semon slayer is just as bad
Things that came from hard work and training that anyone COULD learn, not "oh you're just born special."
Lotta people in this thread who don't understand the Divine Right of Kings.
He never trained it beforehand they kinda foreshadow the memory ass pull like 5 minutes before it happens but that's it
>Oh he was actually trained in a special technique that would be OP in this exact situation years ago, we just never showed it on screen or mentioned it before now
is 100% asspull, but not Divine Right of Kings.
Oh please, Luffy is lucky he got over-powered stretchy powers.
Do you really think he would get as far as he did if his devil fruit power was turning into a chicken or shooting muffins from his eyes?
Again, "lucky RNG" is not the same thing as "Divine Right of Kings."
Anyone can work hard, and anyone can get lucky, but you're either born royal or you aren't.
>Luffy
>Just some guy
>Son and grandson of two of the most important people in modern history
But that fact doesn't really mean anything. Everything Luffy has, besides his devil fruit, is something he had to earn.
Isn't Saitama just a dude that did one too many pushups?
It's something to do with God and Garou, we just need to wait 2 or 3 chapters to see the full story
Only in murata version, in the webcomic the final conflict concludes in a different way.
One Punch Man isn't shonen.
In the webcomic his potential was so low that just by exercising he "broke his limiter", meaning he has no limit.
In the manga it's much the same but they never talk about the limiter, just that his power scales up as needed to beat the threat. They even showed a chart about it recently.
That's what's cool about sports manga, read Hajime no Ippo and Baby Steps. Amazing underdog stories
>That's what's cool about sports manga
To me there is a similar problem with sports manga, a good number of them, heck I can't remember a single one right now where this isn't the case, has the protagonist grow up training since elementary school or something. So that by the point of where the story starts, usually middle or high school, they are already one class higher than everyone else.
Sure they "trained" to have such strong bodies, but it all happened offscreen before the series started.
Baby Steps, Welcome to the Ball Room, Harukana Receive.
That's a really dumb and weird complaint.
It's like complaining that sports dramas that take place in high school like Friday Night Lights or All American don't show the characters training as kids in Pop Warner leagues to get to the skill level they're at.
Let me tell you a story of when I was younger.(around 25-30 years ago)
Back then I didn't know the difference between anime and cartoons, I just watched whatever was on. As a dumb little kid, I was content with that, like any other child of preteen age. One of the cartoons I watched was a soccer story. I watched quite a lot of episodes, thus one day there was the climax to a longer arc, the protagonist finally beat the rival team. The protagonist and the captain of the rival team exchanged shirts and it showed a bunch of flashbacks to previous episodes.
Then it blew my mind, I didn't realize it watching the show episode by episode, week by week, but the characters actually aged up throughout the show! In the first season they were small children, in the end they were like young adults. I was fascinated by that, a show where it showed actual progression. It blew my mind that such a show existed and I wondered why not more shows do that. Why is it always the same age, the same status quo.
That show was Captain Tsubasa.
To sum up: Yes, I want them to show them training by the time they start.
That is of course if the focus is the sport, not the drama around it. I.e. if the character "just happened to be playing soccer" then it doesn't matter, but if the drama is about the sport itself, then yes, show them as kids or whatever.
That's the beauty about underdog stories, because the characters do start off as weak losers and have to grow up during the duration of the movie.
That series was great, it also showed the only think that can save you from the Isekai truck is a football.
Teppu’s sorta a fun inversion on this.
I'm still butthurt it got cancelled.
Read Boku no Hero: Vigilante
Koichi is fricking based and what Deku should have been.
True but I feel like Hori can cry about it in his piles of millions of dollars.
Howdy, Skycrawler!
Never it goes against cultivation to have hard work matter
Wasn’t that at least the first half of BNHA? He had to extensively train for at least a few months just to get access to OFA, then had to hypermanage its use so he doesn’t kill himself in one punch?
Instead of blowing out his body or his fingers he switched to using a fraction of the power and regulating it through his body, or through his feet. All the while combined with trying to nerd up on the obstacles they were facing and the resources they like, like Grapes' or Dark Shadow's power. Then somewhere along the way it got lost with 'I'll just use my full power because I'm really angry/this little girl is a makeshift battery' and it got lost in a muddle of themes that weren't well-executed on paper. And THEN then there was the idea of giving him more abilities, and then having him leave the school to go solo
>And THEN then there was the idea of giving him more abilities, and then having him leave the school to go solo
How did that turn out? I fell off around the Villain arc and struggled to get back into it since life got really busy since 2020.
It was cool for about 5 minutes when he was super dedicated to capturing villains, but it ended when The Friends got through to him via the power of friendship and being a fricking crybaby and took him home.
And you know what's the best part of it? They show that some of the extra powers he gets, he visualizes as tools and gadgets he could use. This helps him control them and whatever but it just goes to prove the idea of a well-equipped and competent but quirkless hero could work just as well as any powered hero (Vigilante does too, with KnuckleDuster). Which I think was the concept for the original version of the story.
Yeah, a lot of fans didn't like how the start of the manga seemed to imply a "hero wins using his quirk combined with his knowledge of quirk analysis", and what we ended up with was largely pic related.
I think a lot of the recent problems with BNHA come from how the author seems to be speed running to the end of a story that was only just getting started. Everything from around when seven quirks got introduced is either tying up a loose end or rapidly advancing the plot through power creep.
>O MY SEVEN QUIRKS
Its really bizarre how fast everything got all of the sudden. As soon as the Overhaul Arc wrapped up it was like everything was playing in fast forward. Hell, it's been years of the manga running and the students are still first years in the endgame. It feels like everything is too soon and too late at the same time as the plot meanders her and scrambles there. I just think Hori got sick and tired of the series and just wants it over with.
>I just think Hori got sick and tired of the series and just wants it over with.
I remember hearing that the second movie was where he originally wanted to end it, with bakagou taking one for all. So yeah, with how much time he was taking off due to illness, he's probably sick of it.
The worst part for me was when Twice reached his true potential, only to get killed off in the next arc before he could do anything.
Hardly a surprise at this point, full power Twice is super busted. This is from the man that doesn't let Uraraka be involved in any major fights because her quirk is death touch when combined with Deku.
>full power Twice is super busted
If he had left it for the last arc it could have been great.
I liked the Festival arc. It felt short, but it was like a week of prep then festival day. Post-Overhaul arc, I felt like that one was pretty well done.
Not really. Deku was a powerless gay that got extremely lucky and inherited the strongest quirk from the de-facto strongest and greatest hero in the setting. The "training my godly powers so I dont kill myself" stint was fresh for shounen at the time, but at the end of the day he was given the keys to godhood like so many other "nobody" protagonists.
It also doesn’t work since every single other character does the same “my power is useless but I trained and trained and trained and made it superpowerful because All Might inspired me” schtick, so it makes Deku seem cheap because he’s training the same, and often much less, than they are, but he’s the only one worth anything because his power is the strongest. To the point you get people saying gays like Mirio should’ve been the Mc since they already did Deku’s entire arc but better offscreen.
Semi-related, but god fricking dammit every male MHA character is the exact fricking same. They even look the same.
>Deku seem cheap because he’s training the same, and often much less
I'm not sure where you got this perception from given all the scenes showing Deku spending all his free time training and even training mid-class where he's able. Kid has no hobbies, he just trains and buys All Might merch.
They all do that. Endeavor became an abusive father because he did that. Mirio and long-earlobes girl and sticky black balls boy all made their useless powers op because they did that. Dabi went insane because he did that.
Shiggy said it himself while fighting Bakugo: none of it matters for shit because Deku is the only person with One for All. They’re just sidecharacters who don’t matter and will job no matter what. It’s so bad the manga has become self aware of this.
It also doesn't help that most people in the western hemisphere think Deku is a crybaby b***hboy, and Mirio's whole existence was that he was a better Deku in every sense of the word, including him having the balls of steel to fight the guy who could turn people into red mist with a touch while quirkless and juggling a hostage the entire time.
Deku barely grows, if at all, as a character. Any consequences he gets for his faults is handwaved or fixed with a magic wand (permanent damage my ass). For all intents and purposes, he's the same person from the sports festival as the one to end AFO's centuries of tyranny. He still
>cries like a b***h
>is a totally obedient boy scout who believes in heroes
>simps for his bully
>suicidally endangers himself
>does brash and impulsive things that end up fricking himself and others over
>has a horrific hero complex
I don't blame others for thinking that someone else was more deserving of OFA than him. Hell, the manga and anime even say this much.
>Semi-related, but god fricking dammit every male MHA character is the exact fricking same. They even look the same.
They really are. Pic somewhat related
All those posts about how femDeku would have been an improvement are misguided, but the picture edits were cute and the idea of a brash melee-class tomboy nerd was cute so I saved them
Personally I believe in Femneta
Also a good choice. Luckily I have already stolen both these characters to make expies off of
Not gonna lie the world needs more gross horny girls god imagine how much porn there would be of her unironic best girl
>the world needs more gross horny girls
strongly agree with that, especially a womanlet
I like this more, since I can just imagine her flicking the bean all day and shipping all her male classmates together though the amount of balls jokes goes down unless you make a lot of "balls in my face" jokes.
Holy shit there's two of them
If you made Deku female, there would be 95% more shipping though and most of it would be yuri
>like Mirio should’ve been the Mc since they already did Deku’s entire arc but better offscreen.
>offscreen
That's the thing, if it's offscreen hori can't try to force a emotion in the reader and waste the entire attempt of making something emotional. Remember Uraraka speech? There was no feeling in it the people there, maybe it's better for someone who can speak japanese i don't know, but the translated versions just looked like the author REALLY WANTED you to feel, but didn't invest a minute of his time to make it feel more natural. Every "happy moment" looks like kubo mouth materializing through the manga pages and saying "PLEASE FEEL EMOTIONAL PLEASE FEEL PLEASE FEEL EMOTIONAL PLEASE CRY PLEEEEASSEEEE".
>kubo
Sorry, Hori. Mixed the authors alittle bit
I don't agree with that.
The whole point of Deku and the comic really is that people need support and fostering.to unlock their true potential.
TinTintangible over there might have a "shit quirk" but his origin story is "he's inspired by a hero then his dad tells him to go for it" while Deku's origin is "literally everyone shits on him 10 years straight, any attempts to improve himself are met with derision, even his own mother's response is 'my poor moronic child." Yeah Deku got lucky, that's half the point, but it doesn't mean he didn't work his ass off when he finally got the support and direction he needed.
That not commenting on the development of extra quirks.
There's Rising Impact.
A 1998 Shonen Jump manga about a 9-year old boy training rigorously to oneday become the world's greatest golf champion because he's being groomed for marriage by a female pedophile who happens to be a golfer
also they do get together and have a baby and there's like 3 chapters of them as a married couple raising their son
>when I turn 30, Gawain is still 18 *heart*
>who's running right into the pedophile quality is popular with the middle/highschool girls
>please let her and gawain get together to show that age isn't a problem in love
I fricking love Cinemaphile man
Man they really like "raising your future wife/husband" stories over there
It's a millennia-old tradition, and true traditions withstand war, nukes and state capture.
Usagi Drop left me weirded the frick out. What is this, a degenerate hentai manga?
obligatory
well, how does it end?
Honestly this.
It is especially worse in Anime because they try to have it both ways.
They try to claim this MC “worked hard” to become stronger but also “comes from a super powerful bloodline”/“happened to get a super OP power or powers” that makes them more special than the other characters.
It makes the whole “underdog” aspect of the protagonist a lie.
Why do people keep not understanding what OP's comic is talking about?
>They try to claim this MC “worked hard” to become stronger
> also “comes from a super powerful bloodline”/“happened to get a super OP power or powers” that makes them more special than the other characters
I'm not sure why these things are mutually exclusive in your mind, having an advantage over your peers but not putting in the work to develop inevitably results in falling behind, aka the Gifted Kid effect.
Nobody cares about common tropes in stories aimed at young girls
>Nobody cares about common tropes in stories aimed at young girls
Then why does this thread have a hundred replies?
Because it got sidelined into common tropes in stories aimed at young boys
>It makes the whole “underdog” aspect of the protagonist a lie.
Japan has, understandably, some natural objections to the idea that an underdog can overcome anything to win against impossible odds.
Sometimes you're just fricked, and if you pick a fight with the wrong dude you get rolled.
>ichigo
>starts off as a human that can see spirits
>becomes part soul reaper through chance
>as the story progresses, manages to be part everything
>yusuke urameshi
>dies saving a kid
>becomes a spirit detective
>oh and he's the grandson of a demon god
I wish this moronic trope would go away forever
Didn't OP just reveal that the fruit Luffy ate wasn't some regular Devil's fruit, but like THE God fruit instead?
...yes. The fruit Luffy ate wasn't the Gum-Gum Fruit that gave him rubber powers. It was actually the Human-Human Fruit: Model Nika that transforms him into the legendary warrior/sun god Nika. Nika just happens to have toonforce powers, which is why Luffy can stretch. The user of that fruit who awakens its true power is destined to change the world, so the government tried to hide it by changing the name.
true, especially in shonen
it's still mega cringe how fast this thread turned out a daily ''let's criticize anime'' thread tho
Fair, but I find myself hard pressed to find western examples as well known for this specific trope.
It pops up from time to time
>Spiderman is the son of super spies and the chosen one to defeat the Devil
>Cap Marvel is the half Kree daughter of some super kree woman
>Thor is the son of Odin and Gaea and the Phoenix
There are many more but I'm not as familiar with
>true, especially in shonen
It's already been established in the thread that this is not the case, and there's a reason the comic is about Western stories, not anime.
And if we're just reducing this down to a "chosen one" trope, that's so universal that it has nothing in particular to do with anime.
>it's still mega cringe how fast this thread turned out a daily ''let's criticize anime'' thread tho
Well let's turn it back to Western comics. I really hate how they keep adding chosen one and special bloodline shit to Spiderman
>Parent's were super spies
>Long lost sister is a super spy
>Destined hero to stand against Mephesto
>Or the sire of the destined hero to stand against Mephesto
Like c'mon can't he just be some kid from Queens who fell ass backwards into superpowers and tries to do good out of guilt. Also I don't care for Spidergirl and other second gen super heroes
It is prevalent in comics too, see house of El or Kamala Khan powers.
>Kamala Khan powers.
Isn't she just an Inhuman with decent, but not top tier powers?
Her powers are multiversal in nature.
Are we talking about comics Kamala or MCU Kamala? Because completely different characters with completely different powerset and origin.
He probably means comic Kamala since her powers work by taking mass from other Kamalas across the multiverse
>her powers work by taking mass from other Kamalas across the multiverse
How exactly does that work? Does this mean every time 616 Kamala uses her powers she cucks another Kamala somewhere out in the multiverse out of using hers? Sounds like it can lead to some interesting implication, like the idea that using her powers might be causing an incalculable amount of deaths somewhere else because other Kamalas get depowered in crucial moments and either die or fail to save people.
That would be funny but I think the idea is that she takes like a pinch of mass from a million different Kamalas instead of just stealing everything she needs from a few unfortunates. She can also shrink so you have to imagine there's probably a lot of free mass flying around at any given time anyway.
Ah. Well then that makes me question what exactly did anon who complained that "she's special because her powers are tied to the multiverse" mean, because that's basically how all powers in Marvel work. Except instead of drawing shit from specialized punch dimension Kamala's power just takes a shortcut. And I assume every other Kamala in the multiverse with the same power operates the same way.
Finally, a break for the Cinemaphile poster
Is this an intended message in battle manga? It's so common. I can think of like three series that don't do this. And many that almost don't do this suddenly did it near the end (Like Yuyu Hakusho and Toriko).
Is it simply because the writers can't resist the temptation?
Ever heard of Princess Kaguya?
Also raw undistiled power creep combined with stories going on for waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too long
99% of shonens are literally determinator underdog stories, the frick?
No, almost always they've got some secret bloodline heredity nonsense.
I'm not sure what the deal with Naruto is but everyone always brings it up about this trope.
Goku isn't a weird strong monkey kid, he's an alien from the most powerful race of conquerors!
Edward Elrick isn't just a kid who worked hard to master alchemy to repair his mistakes, he's actually the son of an ancient alchemist from Xerxes, made immortal by the final main villain.
The formula is a bit altered, but Denji isn't just a guy with a devil contract, his devil is actually the most special devil who eats other devils and retroactively deletes their concepts from existence.
And so on and so fort.
Naruto is the son of a former Hokage and he's akshually from some super duper hotshit bloodline
Edward was related to Hohenheim, but I don't recall them saying being Xerxian did anything special to his own ability as an alchemist. It was cheesy "they're the last of their kind" stuff, but otherwise that was it. Arakawa also didn't have the homunculi treat them different, she kept a "are they blood-related?" joke to a bonus gag comic. But yes, it is a part of a lot of fantasy to be related to someone important.
SPBP
People see that someone is criticizing a trope in Western stories and the whole thread starts immediately projecting it onto anime as much as possible, because they can't deal with anything Western being criticized.
I think it was just easier to point to Naruto than Spiderman is all. That and Anons can't read. Myself included
>Sounds like somebody got Poo Person on their online personality quiz!
All this board does is criticize Western shit. Cinemaphile doesn't actually like anything.
It just so happens to be a fact that anime and manga are much more guilty of what OP is claiming.
Fricking /thread
See
>makes a post trying to imply manga is better for stupid reason
>is instantly destroyed
I do love Cinemaphile sometimes.
are you fricking serious
it's just Cinemaphile being absolutely insecure as always
Oh shit you're right lmfao
I don't think he tried to be Cinemaphile vs /co thread. He tried to be specific with Cinemaphile media because Cinemaphile is already full of it, and anyone with a brain know.
It's common in every media aimed at kids. Kids still think they might be special, so they easily relate to whatever mary sue you show them. The whole "achieving greatness through hard work" is an adult fantasy.
MHA is specially terrible at this. The whole point of deku in the first chapter was to become a hero without powers, thanks to hard work and strategy.
Is MHA a society where people with powers are the ruling elite, while everyone else is a downtrodden peasant?
Yes. The stronger your powers are the more famous a celebrity you become. They have an entire ranking system for that, and people marry just so they can combine quirks and produce a superchild. Meanwhile if you're born without one you're treated like dirt and bullied by everyone for being worthless.
>and people marry just so they can combine quirks and produce a superchild
man that butthole dad had the right idea after all
So people without powers are clearly second class citizens across society with very few rights?
It's weird, there seem to be almost two parallel societies that occupy the same space. Like, you don't really see any supers involved in politics or the state and the police still exist and seem to be all normies, but then supers are more or less self-governing and have their own hierarchies and infrastructure.
In the school system though powerless kids definitely get bullied, and the prestigious elite schools have entrance exams based on power use.
>Like, you don't really see any supers involved in politics or the state and the police still exist and seem to be all normies, but then supers are more or less self-governing and have their own hierarchies and infrastructure
That happens all the time in real life, too. Unelected officials, bureaucrats, financers, private entities, celebrities, criminals organizations, etc. all can have a level of influence on par with local, national, or even international politics than the two or three singled-out guys that voters elect every few years. Any nation, functional or not, is always over 90% made up of unelected people.
Not really, you need a hero license to be able to use your powers in public so there's not much difference between them once they reach adulthood
>you need a hero license to be able to use your powers in public
What about powers that are always on? Or powers that permanently transform you into something blatantly inhuman?
Or what about powers that are non-violent or at least used non-violently? Would you be arrested for, let's say, disappearing a fallen tree trunk blocking the road or pulling a cat down from a tree with telekinesis? Is there any leeway for samaritan cases, like if you have a power to boost regeneration (without a liscence) and use it to heal someone who got his chest ripped open and was seconds away from dying?
It's like a driver's license. If you're only ever doing donuts in a field on your own property nobody cares, and if you need to drive a woman in labor to a hospital the authorities are probably going to ask too many questions, but if you're involved in a traffic accident the consequences for you are going to be way way worse if they check and find out you also didn't have a license to be driving at all.
>the authorities are probably NOT going to ask too many questions
I a word
Just walking around being what you are is fine, but there's no good Samaritan laws for quirks. If someone's in trouble and you try to use your powers to help without a license it's your ass if it goes wrong or your ass period if there's violence involved.
What the frick is wrong with Japanese people?
This is the whole reason behind the "Meta-Human Liberation Front" and their ideology. Destro believed that people with quirks have a natural right to make use of their powers and social restrictions against them are rooted in fear or unwillingness to address the root social causes of supervillainy.
>Destro believed that people with quirks have a natural right to make use of their powers
That seems like a swing from one extreme end of the spectrum to another. Like, what if your power is "firing blasts of concentrated radiation" or anything similarly dangerous, or they are just uncontrollable? Sounds like there needs to be some middle ground because both these ideas suck, but I'm frankly not sure how it should be implemented. Power-dampening devices for anyone with problematic powers? Obligatory training courses for uncontrollable quirks? Idk.
I mean yeah the MHLF are essentially superpower Libertarians that have decided that since bad regulations exist having no regulations is optimal, as if that's not already something that happened and was so awful that the current flawed system was implemented to fix it.
They're not even libertarians. They're more like hardcore anarchists with a social darwinism/pack hierachy fetish. See how Redestro bows down to Shiggy literally because Shiggy is stronger. No higher ideals, just zero-empathy extremist individualism.
>That seems like a swing from one extreme end of the spectrum to another. Obligatory training courses for uncontrollable quirks? Idk.
The X-Men have been trying to tackle this issue for 59 years and still haven't put forward a good answer.
Well yeah because they keep getting distracted with going "actually maybe the flatscans SHOULD be killed off so we can inherit the world?"
>Obligatory training courses for uncontrollable quirks?
This seems like the best one. Like, violent morons exist irl but we have courses tot ry and help them integrate into society, better still if society already accepts you and all you need to do is learn how to shut your dangerous power on and off instead of being forced to choose between joining the police or becoming The Joker.
That's good and all, but what if your power just... has no off switch or can't be dialed down to manageable levels? To continue the "we have violent morons irl" analogy, we also have people who do mad shit just because they are mentally ill and no amount of coaching or courses will ever correct that.
So... do you just toss anyone with inherently uncotrollable powers somewhere where they can't hurt anyone?
Yes, if they're not willing to try and integrate. Noone in the series so far has a truly unmanageable quirk, even Shiggy's Decay is stopped by just wearing gloves.
Just like irl if you are too crazy to cooperate or are just not willing to try you get sent to jail. That's fair.
>Just like irl if you are too crazy to cooperate or are just not willing to try you get sent to jail. That's fair.
But what if you ARE willing to cooperate, but your power is literally "at random time of the day I turn every person in 100 meter radius around me into gummy bears and my power can't reverse it"? I understand that powers like that may not exist in MHA, but I'm talking in general. I'm pretty sure tons of powers like this exist in Marvel or, to be specific, in X-Men titles.
There's usually some sort of power dampening chicanery to avoid the implications that power may cause, but problems like these that challenge these situations are a tough moral and ethical call. If there's a truly uncontrollable and destructive power, the answer might range from banishment to taking the power away to even death. It's always gonna be something messy.
why don't they just keep making those serums Overhaul produced that take away quirks. There are clearly a significant portion of people who have no business wielding city-destroying superpowers, and some quirks are more hindrances than benefits to the user anyway. Aren't there also implications that quirks are just getting more crazy and hard to control, so in a few generations who knows what the society will look like
>why don't they just keep making those serums Overhaul produced that take away quirks
Aside from Overhaul being a selfish little frickface, those serums require harvesting the flesh from a little girl. Plus, who's the one distributing and administering this irreversible product? Not to mention the reception since calling it controversial would be underselling it. In their world a quirk is tied to their identity, would removing it be ego death? The morals and logistics are a fricking nightmare.
>why don't they just keep making those serums Overhaul produced that take away quirks. There are clearly a significant portion of people who have no business wielding city-destroying superpowers, and some quirks are more hindrances than benefits to the user anyway.
I know X-Men writers don't tackle that issue properly. No matter how shitty your mutant power is or how inhuman you look thanks to it, you must be proud of being a mutant and refuse any kind of cure, even if it's voluntary. What, you DON'T want to look like a giant urchin or generate an uncontrollable aura of death? Get fricked.
...Do...Do any of the non mutants or anti X-Men people call this out or not? If I knew nothing about the X-men I would've assumed this was supervillain recruitment.
It's a serious issue with X-Men as a concept stemming from its origins as a minority allegory, it wasn't a big issue before decades of power creep but now they're still talking about being born with the power to passively atomize everything within a mile radius as if it's exactly the same as being black or gay.
Thematically it makes sense, sure, but in a logical sense the X-men are fricking horrifying. Imagine a group of people born with nigh absolute destructive power capable of, and may have already committed, massive death and calamity. Instead of learning to control or even remove the power's negative effects entirely, the superpowered just go
>lol its who I am deal with it
and face no consequences since they can atomize them away with a fart.
Overall it's just bizarre tone-deaf writing. Invalidating the experiences of mutants with negative powers so those with pretty privilege/positive powers can feel better about themselves doesn't help anyone in-universe or out.
>Invalidating the experiences of mutants with negative powers so those with pretty privilege/positive powers can feel better about themselves doesn't help anyone in-universe or out.
You gotta remember that a good amount of X-gays AND X-writers seem to be self inserters who think they'd get cool powers and not be Jimmy six buttholes
Not really. Recently they did help out a girl whose powers had accidentally warped her body, but even that took a while because some X-man (who looked totally normal) sperged out about humans.
Yeah, well the x-men were claimed as gay property so they can never be villains.
What mutants are even bad guys anymore? I can't think of one aside from Mr Sinister who doesn't count because he was evil before artificially giving himself the X-gene. Even Cassandra Nova is working with the heroes now. Brand doesn't count because she's incredibly based.
So far it hasn't come up in MHA but it's been foreshadowed with the Quirk Singularity concept. Quirks have gotten stronger with each generation and there have been multiple canon examples of young children with extremely powerful and destructive Quirks that they don't know how to control causing the deaths of those around them, it's only a matter of time until a walking nuke is born and society has to decide what to do with them. Quirk dampening or destroying drugs are a possibility in-universe so it may not be as huge of a problem as with X-Men though.
Good guys tend to be bothered by the ethics of harvesting a little girl's body for pharmaceuticals, but yeah that's probably where it'll end up once she's old enough to make the decision on her own.
oh yeah forgot that's how they made them, but there's gotta be like one other person out of literal billions with a similar power that can replicate a similar effect, better yet get a bunch of scientists to try and reproduce it without harming anyone
That's why they're an antagonist faction eventually subverted by straight up villains.
But they arguably have so many members because of how MHA Japan deals with quirks.
>Sounds like there needs to be some middle ground because both these ideas suck, but I'm frankly not sure how it should be implemented. Power-dampening devices for anyone with problematic powers? Obligatory training courses for uncontrollable quirks? Idk.
Thats precisely the problem. In-universe, the law can't (or doesnt want to) make laws covering every possible quirk under the sun. Some powers are mundane like stretching out your eyeballs or long fingers or blowing bubbles while others are shit like destroying DNA or melting flesh or making people shit out their lungs and vomit entrails. The same world where someone has harmless shit like sweating moisturizer is the same world where someone can literally murder-pulverize ANYTHING with a single touch.
>forty_one_percent.gif
MHA is a work of fiction. It's not real. The characters don't exist. Super powers don't exist.
Literally every shounen has a society where an aristocratic elite wields supreme power while everyone else is a powerless, slave-like peasant?
You just said this, homosexual
, quit being obtuse on purpose.
Yes that is my post. What about it?
why are you taking the aristocratic society stuff so literally you autist? That's not even the point the comic was trying to make, it shits on the trope of "underdog character is actually supremely blessed and shits all over the theme 'hard work' it originally tried to convey,' you're the only one itt caught up about "muh aristocratic elite"
I'm not taking anything literally, autist.
>That's not even the point the comic was trying to make, it shits on the trope of "underdog character is actually supremely blessed and shits all over the theme 'hard work' it originally tried to convey,' you're the only one itt caught up about "muh aristocratic elite"
I am the one who is correctly understanding the comic, not you.
no you aren't, you're literally the only one itt harping on about irrelevant details because everyone else can comprehend what the comic is actually trying to criticize
I'm the only one who gets it.
>Back to Cinemaphile, I want to ACTUALLY discuss anime for once.
Then go to Cinemaphile. This isn't the anime board and this thread isn't about anime.
>I'm the only one who gets it.
Ah, you're the stubborn kind of moron. I'll be sure to hide your posts for now on.
>he thinks you can talk about anime on Cinemaphile
>he doesn't know
>says he's not taking anything literally
>has a connipton over the hyperbolic sentence "Literally every Shounen"
Back to Cinemaphile, I want to ACTUALLY discuss anime for once.
Yep, thats the point. It's supposed to be unfair and a genuine criticism of Hero Society, but Hori is a massive pussy when it comes to these kinds of consequences. So its there as motivation for some villains but it never really challenges the MC's point of view like that wet fart Stain and nobody cares enough to change it, only to upheld the status quo.
>If someone's in trouble and you try to use your powers to help without a license it's your ass if it goes wrong or your ass period if there's violence involved.
So basically, people are discouraged from using their unregistered powers even in cases where their interference might save a life? That's kinda fricked up.
It's a major contributor to crime, yeah. Japan being Japan any form of criminal activity has major stigma attached so flubbing an attempted unlicensed rescue is almost certain to get you shunned, ostracized, and pushed out of polite society into its seedy underbelly. The system being fricked is one of MHA's overarching themes.
Especially since plenty of Heroes work with Vigilantes on missions in an "off the books" sort of way.
There's an entire side story manga that's centered entirely around this.
I heard it's significantly better than the main series and is actually good, how true is that?
>So its there as motivation for some villains but it never really challenges the MC's point of view like that wet fart Stain and nobody cares enough to change it, only to upheld the status quo.
Ah yes, the "Big Two capeshit" syndrome. Why can't one just write capeshit series that actually explored the effect superpowers with have on the society and humanity in general?
>I heard it's significantly better than the main series and is actually good, how true is that?
The early chapters are a bit awkward at times, but it's VERY good once the author finds a rhythm.
>I heard it's significantly better than the main series and is actually good, how true is that?
One of the best Shonens of the last couple years and genuinely one of the best capeshit for the last couple years. And it features pretty much everything the people in this thread want
>Hero is an average dude with a mediocre power
>Just wants to help people and uses his powers to do so
>Through shenanigans he gets the attention of a professional unpowered vigilante who takes him under his wing and trains him up
>Through surviving crisis after crisis he grows and enhances his powers to the point that sliding on the ground becomes, sliding on walls and even the air
Seriously if you hate special snowflakes and destined chosen ones and just want to see some good ol super heroism and a shmuck punching above his weight class and barely surviving read Vigilante
Also, don't forget
>Hero's willingness to help people is also a hinderance that prevented him from becoming a hero in the first place
Really puts his heroic idealism up against the necessary selfishness it takes to become a pro Hero.
And let's not forget the most enjoyable villain in the MHA franchise
The best part about Vigilantes is that it knows what it's central message is: A true hero will do good regardless of the circumstances. Since the theme is so simple and clear, it manages to do a lot with it. One of the biggest problems I had with the original series is that it had like three or four different central themes that it would bounce between, without really committing to any of them.
Trying to do too much is probably MHA's core problem, it has such a large cast with so many overarching storylines that it fails to properly service most of them.
That's... a hell of a twist this late in the game, I'm not sure how someone would write that to make it satisfying but I haven't read OP since shortly before Whole Cake so maybe it's not O My Rubber Nen in context
>That's... a hell of a twist this late in the game, I'm not sure how someone would write that to make it satisfying but I haven't read OP since shortly before Whole Cake so maybe it's not O My Rubber Nen in context
believe me, there was quite the outrage over this. At the very least the same people who complained about "Oh my rubber nen" also complained about this
>Trying to do too much is probably MHA's core problem, it has such a large cast with so many overarching storylines that it fails to properly service most of them.
This, there's too many players with a limited amount of screentime to spread to everyone, so you have literal whos present in the story that were introduced since like chapter 8. It got to the point that nobody cares for the big endgame war arc since the cast is full of nobodies and the main crew has dogshit or tired storylines. But this is Cinemaphile and not Cinemaphile, so I'll save my bitterness for another thread, lest it derails into anime again.
>lest it derails into anime again.
Anon... it already got derailed into anime hundred replies ago.
While the Nika reveal was pretty annoying, I feel like the impact was softened by all of the other shit we've seen.
Like how some devil fruits act like one type but are classified as another.
Or the fact that Nika is a completely made up god for One Piece.
And that Luffy's gear abilities make no sense for rubber and are just part of his toon-force powers.
And of course, there is going to be a severe draw back to using this power, like with his other gears when he first used them.
Also, it BTFO all the fans who wanted Luffy's gear 5 to look like pic related.
I really wante it to be something like the "fun fun fruit", just something that would justify his toonforce and fit his personality well. Of course, staying rubber would have been fine too.
I haven't kept up with it in over a year, but vigilantes is straight up better than MHA except for the fact that they retcon stain in a way that ruins his character. Fortunately, knuckle duster more than makes up for that.
>they retcon stain in a way that ruins his character
How?
He's even more of a loser than he was in canon: see spoiler below
Stain used to call himself Stendhal and was a vigilante that murdered the frick out of those that he deemed villains, including the victims forcibly drugged up by Trigger. He believed he was above the Heroes vs. Villains stuff and wore a mask. Get's his nose punched in by Knuckleduster after he's played like a chump and uses this incident to motivate his new desire to remove false heroes, thus becoming Stain years later.
That... doesn't sound so bad? He was already a hypocrite and a massive c**t in the original series, so not that surprising.
Yeah, wasn't the point of his character that his entire worldview was stupid and empty? Or was it an author mouthpiece to tell us how great a hero Deku is?
The point of the character was to show what a stupid manchild Shiggy is that he thought he could motivate villains by just having a scary quirk and resources, validating Deku as All Might's successor was a side benefit.
I suppose it's a matter of how you interpreted his character. To me, I got the impression that despite being passionate, he wasn't insane. I liked how he saw himself as a villain that served a greater purpose. I never got the sense that he was deluded. He knew exactly what he was doing and actively hoped to get taken down by all might.
Vigilantes doesn't really leave room for interpretation. He's just a wackjob with delusions of grandeur.
I don't mind the idea of revealing that the original motivations of the league of villains were shallow and false, but they already did that with how shiggy took stain's beliefs and repurposed them to get ahead.
Vigilantes' portrayal of the character didn't improve him or serve any narrative purpose that couldn't have been accomplished with an original character.
I agree with you. I think the fact that his ideology caught fire and public attention in the series really implicates the failures of Hero Society, especially the higher up you go.
He was Punisher, but Hobo Batman punched him so hard in the face he became Zoom.
speaking of which
>knuckleduster manages to be a hero without any quirk, completely invalidating Deku's bullshit about how being quirkless holds him back
To be fair, and spoilering it just in case you haven't gone that far, KD was already a hero who got depowered by AFO. While he obviously had to learn how to fight powerless (considering he was The Flash, his entire modus operandi had to change radically), you could argue he already had significant experience and the right mindset to be a hero.
It's not all bad, but there are a few key moments that make him seem like a hypocrite with very loose values. Like how he only started his campaign against fake heroes after being outed as a fake hero himself. As it turns out, his "creed" was only a very recent idea he didn't even come up with on his own. He's portrayed less as an intelligent man driven by his uncompromising values, and more as a madman coming up with justifications for his murder streak.
Haven't kept up since 2019 but it was good when I left off in the Aizawa arcs. Plenty of the teachers can actually be seen doing hero work too, which is a step up from a lot of the original series which focuses mostly on the kids training to become heroes.
It's also home to the single best page of the entire mha series
...what even is the context?
teacher in main series is subtly implied to be a shotacon, but not confirmed.
side-series showing her as a newbie confirms that she is a shotacon who joined the school just so she could frick kids offscreen.
She teaches sex ed and her first lesson is for guys how to jack off. I dunno if she puts the effort into teaching girls how to do it, since I don't think she's worried they'll become incel villains. Then again, she did run into one female whose sexual obsession with her friend made her turn to villainy.
I've personally never seen her out of costume but I assume that's Midnight (The R Rated Hero) explaining why she puts so much effort into being sexy despite being a middle-aged teacher. Apparently, she believes boys that don't jerk off enough become villains, which is... an ideal I suppose.
Makes as much sense as most sociology/criminology BS
And the real life feds believe it too, considering the FBI is by far the largest distributor of child porn in the world
If she's not fricking them then she's literally making it worse
I think the implication is she's giving them handys
I don't know about middle-age but she's like late 20s in Vigilantes, if I remember right. I can't remember how big the time skip is from Vigilantes to the main story, I always assumed it was less than a decade.
I like how they make Midnight a competent hero in Vigilantes but her horniness will always be a funny side thing for me.
>Your boss gets to draw the Big Boober while you're stuck on Building Duty again
the life of an assistant mangaka
many such cases
>characters power is well established as a fact at the beginning
>he has to have at least 3 points of contact with the ground to glide
>jk he can do it with 2 he was just scared
>jk he can fly now
>actually he could always fly he just forgot
and I stopped reading there I don't know what else bullshit happened
>Parental abuse and trauma gave him a mental block to overcome
All the moves he got were logical extensions of his power and even then weren't THAT good compared to what he was facing
"amnesia" is the worst plot ever
no matter the circumstances
if something is established how it works it should not be retconned
ever
>"amnesia"
It's less amnesia and more his mom beat him into staying in his lane that subconsciously abided by her wants into adulthood which is a thing that actually happens to victims of abuse, super powers notwithstanding
But then how will the author endlessly power creep? If I've learned anything from superhero, shonen, and xianxia, surely power level = story quality?
To be fair we DO see unlicensed heroes get off with just a slap on the wrist for using their powers to fight a serial killer villain and save a licensed hero's life.
Because things turned out well and there was a convenient way to cover it up. Unsurprisingly, individuals sometimes attempt to make up for the system's shortcomings when the price for doing so is low.
>Or what about powers that are non-violent or at least used non-violently?
There's a spin-off about a guy who has a weak quirk that only lets him slide around on surfaces slightly faster than running. He couldn't get his hero license, so he moonlights as a "vigilante" that picks up trash and stuff. The cops sometimes stop him for unlicensed quirk use, but he's enough of a non-issue that they let him off with a lecture.
Then he gets roped into doing actual vigilante work and discovers his quirk has a frickton of other uses he never thought of, so he becomes enough of an issue that the cops do start coming after him
Plus, he gets roped into other hero work with reluctant pro Heros like Aizawa. They also build up his character too.
To clarify, most people have powers. There are really four tiers: people with stigmatised powers like mind control, the increasingly rare unpowered poo people, most people that have shitty powers like bendy fingers (that's actually a significant character in one movie), and the elite with cool powers like shooting explosions from their hands.
You forgot the mutants unless you folded them into stigmatized powers, but I'd put them in their own category
Mutants fall under "shitty powers like bendy fingers"
>Mutants fall under
I coulda sworn they're discriminated against though, I remember some autist on Cinemaphile that finds any excuse to complain that the book is really wishy washy about it
Ugly people will always be discriminated against in every reality, it doesn't require pointing out as a feature of the setting.
Again I coulda sworn it was a level above like everyone assumes they're villains at first glance
The ones that are mutated to look dangerous, yeah. Nobody thinks Hawks or Mirko are villains at first glance but Gang Orca had to work on his public image to get respect.
Some are, some aren't. Some of the elite heroes are mutants, that star-head guy from episode 1 has shitty powers, and the goo villain falls under stigmatized.
Being a hero really helps too. Gang Orca looks like an actual monster but people don't care because he's a famous powerful hero. The 8 foot tall big titty furry woman from a few chapters ago was attacked by civilians because they said "she shouldn't go outside looking like that". And nobody bullies Miruko for having bunny ears because they don't look ugly.
>because they don't look ugly
That's the core of it yeah. In MHA you're immediately stigmatized if
>Your quirk makes you look ugly/scary
>Your quirk has obvious nefarious utility
>You commit any level of crime
All of it can be overcome and the series does make examples of each but it's undeniable that this is a cultural problem.
As long as it doesn't go all Rent-A-Girlfriend it has a chance of reaching a decently sized audience
>As long as it doesn't go all Rent-A-Girlfriend
That was a very VERY special case, Anon would have to sabotage it on purpose and even then I doubt he'd frick up THAT badly
It sounds like he wants to write about a character propelled by his negative emotions and what success they can achieve without getting healthier, which can be interesting so long as anon doesn't forget that the protag is a miserable, wretched thing at its core.
True but still it's kinda hard to top writing official NTR porn of the main heroine getting railed in a cuck fantasy for 1/3 of a chapter and the MC crying and cumming to it in a pool like a fricked up version of the Nervermind album cover.
>it's kinda hard to top
Perhaps, but I have faith that if anyone can do it it's an anon that frequents the unofficial home website of maidenless behavior.
Why the frick is this fetish becoming so mainstream?
The internet and social media
Oh and I'd argue a strange subversion where the fetish got taken over by sadists over the original masochists
Is that really what has happend though? I feel like we'd be seeing more stories where the one stealing the girl is stealing her from a villain or shitstain. Instead it's usually a near non-character doing it to the character who is the point of reference most the time.
You're missing the third option.
More and more of these stories are focused on the girl, who is often more of the primary perspective than the 'good guy'.
>I feel like we'd be seeing more stories where the one stealing the girl is stealing her from a villain or shitstain
That is probably a reaction to the last half decade or more of the prevalence of NTR stories that we all know and despise. What I mean about sadists taking over is that for example on Cinemaphile you'll see a lot of dudes go "I insert as the bull/girl" despite the POV being the cuck. Combine that with how a lot of the series that get targeted for NTR porn are boring rom coms where a kinda pussy dude gets with a girl "out of his league". I think theres a sizable segment of people that are fed up with certain stories/characters and NTR is like some sort of protest against it
I noticed there is a Fate: Grand Order NTR doujinshi that is apparently quite popular with female cosplayers, where Mash ends up dressed in a harem outfit.
Not sure if they are the ones who are into it, or if they are simply appealing to a visible demographic.
because of parasocial relationships making actual connections seem deliberately unobtainable or something?
I'd add poly types having access to a wider audience to spread their ideas especially the really defensive ones. Also as I said here
it seems like a lot of NTR fans take pleasure at seeing other people miserable especially those they deem "undeserving" like spineless harem protagonists.
Basically this, the internet runs on engagement and things that evoke negative responses in the majority of people are the most engaging things. These negative engaging things are then collated and concentrated by the algorithm to further drive engagement, resulting in rare but highly upsetting things seeming far more common than they actually are because they've been gathered in one place for your consumption.
>And nobody bullies Miruko for having bunny ears because they don't look ugly.
That and she's the type who'd probably beat your ass if you said something about her. Wasn't she doing vigilante work while also training to be a pro-Hero?
Kinda, people with powers that compliment their chosen profession are the ruling elite. The masses have virtually useless or no powers and criminals have actively negative powers and/or untreated mental illnesses and trauma.
Your disappointment is understandable but I'm not sure how that would have worked with the power level he was going for. When the bar was set at "change the weather as the side effect of a punch" in the second episode it doesn't seem likely Izuku could even reach Eraser's street-level hero tier with nothing but his nerd-level observation skills, some intensive strength training, and a bunch of Hatsume's support items. I'm more frustrated with his cleverness frequently getting sidelined in favor of hysterical fury and the addition of new powers when he's barely scratched the potential of his super strength.
>The masses have virtually useless or no powers and criminals have actively negative powers and/or untreated mental illnesses and trauma.
True. I mean, the series starts with All Might basically saying that quirkless kids can grow up to be cops which is essentially the shitty consolation prize for not getting to become a hero.
Like you said it just wouldn't work with the way Deku was. To even do justice to the "normie in a superpowered world" concept he'd have to be fricking crazy and make full use of deadly /k/ weapons without restraint to ever hope of beating anyone, like an operator batman
>To even do justice to the "normie in a superpowered world" concept he'd have to be fricking crazy and make full use of deadly /k/ weapons without restraint to ever hope of beating anyone, like an operator batman
Either weaponry, or augmentation, or find some way to harness/crystallise other peoples' abilities and be a hypocrite for relying on them while touting the message of being a hero in his own way without relying on the 'crutch' of a power. I don't think MHA even goes into the idea of tools/food/accessories being made from or enhanced with powers, outside of Overhaul's drugs - society could be full of things shipped to stores and taken for granted, things that were born off the backs of unlucky people captured and experimented on and harvested
Sorta. Being a certified Hero gives you semi-elite status and puts you into an international upper class of people who went to the best prep schools, were trained like hell, and will essentially be put into televised popularity contests to rank how much you’re worthy of being idolized. Vigilantes also reveals that the Hero system was established to favor the elite and to criminalize low level heroes after like 90% of the world got powers. Doesn’t stop Heroes from working with them though.
Fortunately for you there is a long running spinoff that features just what you're looking for
>the only secret ingredient to achieving greatness is that you need to believe in yourself, and have others believe in you, your species and circumstances do not matter
>lol jk Po is part of the only race of animal that can harness Chi and become super saiyan dragonform plus ultra in the spiritrealm that’s why Oogway chose him indomitable Fate dictated that only Po could become dragonwarrior no matter how hard anyone else like Tigress or Tai Lung tried because they’re not a panda
>lol jk Po is part of the only race of animal that can harness Chi and become super saiyan dragonform plus ultra in the spiritrealm that’s why Oogway chose him indomitable Fate dictated that only Po could become dragonwarrior no matter how hard anyone else like Tigress or Tai Lung tried because they’re not a panda
Is that really a thing in the sequels? Makes Tigress' angst completely justifiable.
NTA but yes, and it's a damn shame.
I have a bit of a similar problem with something Im writing. So the mc isn't a chosen one, but he has a cool ability. It turns out that a long time ago, everyone of his kind had this ability too, but right now they don't because of their situation. Is that okay? It's like, "this power used to be totally normal." Also, it's not the strongest.
It's only a problem if the entire fricking plot of the first one was that there was no "special sekrit" that made you DA CHOSEN OEN
I get it in KFP's case, but for what I'm working on there is basically no mention of destiny or chosen ones.
Tell me the title so I know if I should care
But you literally wouldn't know about it, it's being worked on
Tell me anyway
The set-up as you put it is not bad, but be careful permanently of power creep. Like Naruto and
explain, this "special all along" reveal happens much later into a story, not at the start. My advice is, have the MC start something like their own school, like Luke Skywalker in the Extended Universe.
They needed fodder for a sequel and chose something easy to throw together even if it contradicted the spirit of the original film.
Yeah that was fricking stupid. Going from "no one is special, people just step up" to "YOU ARE SPECIAL ON A GENETIC LEVEL, SO SPECIAL THAT AN ENTIRE CULTURAL OF FAT AND LAZY IDIOTS CAN CHANNEL HIDDEN MAGIC POWERS WITH A SHORT MONTAGE"
To be fair, pandas aren't the only ones who can harness chi (as seen in the petal yin-yang scene where Tigress uses chi to help Po,) they just have the mindset that allows the flow of chi to come to them naturally, and Oogway picked Po because he has the most talent, the most room to grow and an appreciation for the art of kung fu itself, versus Tigress and Tai Lung who both were too set in their ways and were only using kung fu to impress their surrogate father
Tigress wasn't using Chi in that scene, she was doing the same handsignals to try and help but nothing was happening. She was basically just cheerleading Po's moron village.
This was confirmed in Paws of Destiny, btw. Only Pandas can use Chi, no other species.
>This was confirmed in Paws of Destiny, btw. Only Pandas can use Chi, no other species.
Oh motherfricker, you gotta be kidding me. Does that mean Oogway and Kai knowing it means its a plothole?
They could use it because they were immortal spirits who'd died
>tfw daddy issues make you good at kung fu but maxes out your skill levels so you can never become a legend
That was in the third movie, wasn't it? Every day, I thank myself for not seeing it.
Yeah it was dumb, but at least the villain had a catchy theme. At least listen to that.
>Anyone can be special, no matter what the circumstances of their birth!
Not really, Theophilia Wallace or rather Rey because let’s be real, this is about Star Wars and the whole Rey Palpatine thing, was only special because of the circumstances of her birth made her naturally good at The Force. If she had actually trained or anything yeah you might have had a point but even before the RoS retcon, Rey was just naturally better than everyone else and the only way to be as good as her is was to already be Rey. As such the real less is
>If you’re not already special, then you never will be and no amount of effort will ever change that
I thought it was more a reaction to the live action Mulan, where they changed her from "normal girl who uses hard work and courage to defend her homeland" to "godlike kung fu prodigy from childhood"
Oh yeah that makes way more sense. In my defense I forgot the live action Mulan even happened
That's been a thing since the original trilogy
>Luke is a poor dirt farmer
>Turns out his father is Darth Vader
>Anakin is a poor child slave
>Literal chosen one
It's true that the SW protags are all Chosen Ones by birth though it's notable how the exact style of CO shifted between trilogies. Luke was the son of one of the strongest force sensitives ever but he spent two movies as a whiny bumbling shithead whose only real skills were droid maintenance and piloting small craft, his job and hobby respectively. Born with a gift, but had to do a lot of work to make anything of it. Anakin was a poor slave, but born a genius with stupid levels of force sensitivity so he was mega-gifted compared to his son. He still had to work to develop the skills of a Jedi but largely coasted on natural talent. Rey was also born to similar circumstances to Anakin and over her off-screen life developed some skill in staff-fighting and jury-rigging machines thanks to her starship scrapping job but showed no signs of genius until the plot required her to be able to do something, then she just... could. Rey is an example of The Power Was Inside You All Along flavor of Chosen One that plagues girls media, one doesn't have to work to make anything of their advantages, they're just that special already.
Ask Dimm, that's how he ruined Batman Beyond and even worse than that.
>muh empowering
Get fricked.
I wonder why ~~*they*~~ would write and promote stories like this?
Man, not really Cinemaphile related but this is my number 1 fear for the Rings of Power show. Beyond all the other tasteless 2022-isms being shoved into it, having Hobbits be at all relevant in it ruins the whole point of Lord of the Rings, where the peasants so unimportant they're literally small and most people have never heard of them are the ones who save the world.
>be fricking moron born to some amish fricking morons, can't even find enough money to feed family, they die in a fire

>Put telling a fricking nauseating moral message than the story you intend so you can inspire the grown ass adults that will read it
>Put telling a fricking nauseating moral message over the story*
In the fairy tale, "The Ugly Duckling", the ugly duckling was never a duckling at all--he was a cygnet. The moral of the story is that if you want to grow up to become a swan, you'd better be born a cygnet, because no amount of effort will make a duckling grow up into a swan.
I thought the moral of the story was not to try to be something you are not. The Cygnet was an Ugly duckling because he wasn't a duckling at all. In the same way a beautiful giraffe would be a really an ugly cow.
The message has become muddled with generational retellings and poor understanding of duck biology, because now in most versions it's an actual duckling instead of a cygnet
Yeah but the duck wasn't a cygnet determined to be a beautiful duck he thought he was a duck until a swam came along and told him who he really was.
I think the problem like you said is that the core of the story was misunderstood and modern interpretations links it with being ugly as a kid but becoming beautiful as an adult when that was never the case for the duck.
>How common is this in western media?
It's a cornerstone of media both East and West
Most run of the mill fantasy fiction for and written by females is this. Maybe subtract the backstory but its always some woman that has powers that basically make the world revolve around her. And honestly, having a normie find out that they have special powers greater than the specials defeats the comic's theme of 'oh anyone can be special despite circumstances of birth' anyways because it's just an inherent mutation that would make them no different from a special anyways. t. Femoid.
>Most run of the mill fantasy fiction for and written by females is this
Examples? Haven't checked up on what was popular with women in years, not since The Hunger Games
Unless something else happened in this show that contradicts me I think this one guy managed to do magic stuff like the elves without any magical special ancestry or divine providence.
I suspect the twist there is going to be that the whole "humans can't magic" thing is a myth, and always has been, but one so ingrained in both cultures that no other humans have made any serious attempt to do anything but Dark Magic in generations.
He did it surprisingly easy though, he just used the primal stone for a while, and later learned to do magic whiteout it. You'll think someone else would try it in the hundreds of years that happened before him.
It would be a nice cruel twist if he starts a magic school to teach others to become mages thinking everyone can do magic just to discover he was actually half elf the whole time or something.
That'd be the one series it'd be cool to see it happen in. The problem isn't humanity's ability to use Dark Magic, the problem is elves being buttholes about Dark Magic. They should accept it is neccesary and so should Callum.
The debate over Dark Magic in The Dragon Prince is the most and only interesting part of the show I've seen. Shame it's all black&white wishy-washy about it. Based off of what I gleaned from roaming the threads, my own delusional headcanon I made up is that Elves and other magical creatures are fricking terrified of the shit since they'd be an excellent source of Dark Magic fuel, and take this paranoia out on the human race since they're the most adept or attuned with the art.
Oh yeah normal magic can be done by saying AbraKadabra but dark magic requires the heart of a manticore or the horn of an unicorn to work.
Exactly. It's kinda like equivalent exchange but with strictly organics. Hell, you can make miracles by hunting regular game and using the bodies to cure diseases or whatever. A little drop of blood for a big effect. Makes me think that the stigma over Dark Magic is out of fear that magical creatures like Elves would be harvested to perform Dark Magic.
Elves hate it because the Dragons told them to hate it.
Dragons used to hate it because it "upset the natural order"
Then they hated it because a human sorceror became the first creature to ever slay a dragon, by using Dark magic (in order to protect his city from being fricking burned for no reason)
*injure
not slay
He didn't even kill the dragon though, right? Sol Regem is still alive and being a huge racist butthole.
Yeah that was mistaken.
What I mean to say is the dragons are mad because "you ARE lesser beings." then got more mad because the lesser beings are suddenly as powerful as they are. Their hatred of Dark Magic isn't borne out of fear, but borne out of vanity.
Too late for that. It's pretty clear that the writers want the audience to think dark magic is inherently evil despite only being shown as a tool, nothing else.
>You'll think someone else would try it in the hundreds of years that happened before him.
Maybe they did, but records were repressed and hidden by those interested in keeping Dark Magic supremacy, or elves, or both.
>Dark Magic supremacy
Dark magic in dragon prince is weird because as far as everyone knows at the beginning of the series is the only way humans can do magic. Yet dark mages aren't really an institution in their world, there isn't a grand academy of dark magic or something like that nor is revered as something good that levels the playing field with the elves.
Everyone distrusts dark magic like they where Amish looking at technology, if anything it makes less sense people didn't want to do the other kinds of magic, since is both easier and more socially acceptable.
It's Dragon Prince, shitty worldbuilding that doesn't really make sense is to be expected.
Now stay and watch the nth time where humanity has to be the bigger man and forgive the elves.

Lol what a gay
I accept your concession.
>Searched me out just to reply catty shit
>noooo you aren't allowed to reply to me
If you don't like how imageboards or forums or subreddits or social media work, stop using them. And what "catty shit"? All I said was that I accept that you have conceded the argument.
I'm the only person here who even understands what the comic is referring to.
Your concession was already accepted.
Again, your concession is accepted. Why are you still replying?
Because it's funny watching you sperg
I haven't sperged anywhere. Again, I accept your concession.
>I haven't sperged anywhere
lol lmao
Correct. I haven't done that. Again, I accept your concession. What exactly is your problem? Do you need me to ship you a signed document?
Alright fine, I'll let you win, poking autists like you is fun at first but you're just repeating yourself
You're an autist and you're projecting, and you already gave up on the argument a long time ago because you realized you had lost.
>Respond to the troll
>Repeatedly insist that it is the other person conceding
Not that guy, but that's not how this fricking works. You're supposed to not respond to the bait. By responding to the bait, you are automatically assumed to be assmad and butthurt and you have lost.
'I accept your concession' is a sign of snotty veiled weakness. You're not fricking twelve and this isn't fricking reddit, 'I know you are but what am I' doesn't work here you mongoloid. Proceed directly to Lurk, do not pass Go, do not collect more than a single (You).
There was no troll, and he conceded the argument.
>'I accept your concession' is a sign of snotty veiled weakness.
No, it's just me making the simple factual statement that I have accepted someone conceding the argument. What is wrong with you?
>You're not fricking twelve and this isn't fricking reddit, 'I know you are but what am I' doesn't work here you mongoloid
You're a 12 year old redditor mongoloid and you're projecting.
Lol you made me come back and reply to you after saying I was done just to laugh at your eternal butthurt
okay now this is the last one for real though
You aren't laughing. You aren't having fun. You are putting on an act to try to conceal the fact that you are seething at losing the argument. I've seen this many, many, many times before.
Aw frick I lied, you're just too fun to poke
You aren't having fun. You aren't poking anything. You're seething because you lost the argument and can't get over it.
Seriously man I'm gonna level with you man to man. You can't win, the previous argument no longer matters to me (not that I'd ever concede if it did). All that matters is that when I poke you you respond. My Brother in Christ you could ignore me, hide my posts or just close up shop and move to another thread but you won't because you're too egotistical and you just have to be right, especially since you're still sperging about societal structures
so we'll continue this song and dance until I get bored again
I already won, and you said so yourself when you conceded the argument.
>All that matters is that when I poke you you respond.
Wow, you mean when you say something to people on Cinemaphile they respond? Did you discover that just now?
>My Brother in Christ you could ignore me, hide my posts or just close up shop and move to another thread but you won't because you're too egotistical and you just have to be right
You are the one who keeps saying he's leaving only to come back. You are the one who can't let go. I already told you several times that your concession was accepted, but here you are.
>especially since you're still sperging about societal structures
I never did that in the first place.
lol you've learned nothing
You lost.
Not my decision.
You homosexuals are still going?
He keeps sperging so I keep poking
hey it keeps the thread bumping
lol
I never sperged anywhere, and you aren't "poking." You are seething because you lost the argument and can't get over it.
I have not trolled anywhere. I accept your concession.
No, you walk away.
I suspect it's two trolls baiting each other, like a blindfolded orgy with only 2 people, or that thing ants do when they follow each other round in a circle until they die.
I'm not him. I'm a one-post poster who forgot to hit Shift on my > before greentexting his quote.
Not involved in this stupid monkey crapfight, don't wanna be involved.
Japan is a very misanthropic, nihilistic country. Especially their pop culture. They really aren't worth discussing, because they will never get better.
The West can rise above this, it only sucks conditionally, so its more important to focus on what we can improve here.
I think Harry Potter doing this is what killed it for most zoomers.
>harry is just some normal mundane kid but his mother's love defeated Voldemort
>lol no it was based on a prophecy actually
>lol no it was based on a prophecy actually
The books kind of implied the same twist as the Lego Movie with prophecy being bullshit. Remember, Neville is Harry if his parents DID actually die in an unceremonious car crash; plus when Trelawny was replaced with Firenze, whose entire species are about divination and prophecy, he made it clear that most prophecy is still pretty bullshit
The prophecy would've been whoever Voldemort attacked. If he had attacked Neville's parents, then Neville would've become the chosen one. Harry wasn't special, Voldemort made him special.
Neville would've gotten it done in 4 books
No, I feel like that's probably just overly online millennials posting cringe about how much they're a Hufflepuff and JK Rowling seething over the transes. I used to work in a school and I knew some kids who were still really into Harry Potter, but presumably they weren't online enough to encounter that shit.
>muh empowering
These fricks deserve the rope.
Ironically Harry Potter isn't this. The Wizards always knew who he was and his prodigy is just on a broom because his dad was also good on a broom. Plus if, say, James or Lily survived Voldemort attacking them, he'd be of zero note in his own world.
Yeah the only think that made Harry special is that Voltdemort fricked up and inadvertently liked his destiny with Harry's.
You're a real homosexual if you're bothered by this.
>superpower society
>MC is born without powers or special bloodline
>seethes for the whole series inbetween attempts to get a leg up on everyone else
I dont think a whole lot of people would gravitate towards that but I did so I'm working on a /coc/ project about the idea

Thanks a hundo
This thread made me wonder if there's a story where EVERY single person in a population is superpowered, without muggles/flatscans/whoever, and all powers are at least somewhat useful. The "non-powered masses discriminate against powered minorities" or the reversal of that like in MHA are kind of getting tiring.
Earth X
Is it good?
I only got up to the first four or five issues and it was okay
Very
Closest off top of my head is a Darkwing Duck episode with a planet where everyone is superpowered except one guy who is the designated civilian for everyone else to rescue. He gets fed up of the role
MHA is pretty close to being that
I find that most western media that does the "anyone can be special" moral still has a main character that is very clearly different from the normies in some way.
Like when superheroes do the "you guys are the real heroes" routine. It's patronizing.
>Like when superheroes do the "you guys are the real heroes" routine. It's patronizing.
Yeah, it's clear that this is done to give respect to real cops, firefighters and etc. because they are real and superheroes are not, but it makes absolutely zero sense in-universe. In fact, cops should be the one saying that to heroes, because it's heroes who routinely save the city, the world and entire fricking universe.
>Trying to get the last word on an anonymous image board.
Get a load of these clowns
The dude is too fun to frick with, even after revealing my hand he still wants to play
how could I not bully this sperg
You aren't having fun. You aren't bullying anyone. You're seething because you lost.
lol get some prep H for your ass hurt
You're the one whose ass is hurt.
lol
You lost the argument, as you admitted yourself. You said more than once that you're leaving, but you kept coming back. You can't get over the fact that you lost.
Stop making these posts and read the thread.
Win/loose doesn't matter all that matters is you're butthurt
No, you're butthurt. Because you lost.
I don't know much about the character, but is Captain America free from this? As far as I know he wasn't born with anything special, and only got chosen for his powers by being brave, patriotic, etcetera.
I don't think he was ever retconned to be special in any kind of way.
Other Marvel heroes aren't so lucky. Spider-Man got a whole list of "chosen one" roles hanged on him over the decades.
Spencer turning him and Mayday into the ones who will defeat Mephesto felt like the biggest frick you after he left that dumpster fire of a run
I was talking more about the web of life/destiny/whatever bullshit, but this works too. And I'm pretty sure there's more.
Yeah, he's still the son of an alcoholic wife beater and his mom still died when he was young. Secret Empire tired to do some shit but that was dimensional frickery from the cosmic cube
>teamwork is what really matters, you gais!!!
That's the way the world is. It's a reflection of God's design. The liberal fantasy of anyone born anywhere being able to do anything doesn't make any sense because there has to be some reason why someone does better than another person.
The end game in Christianity is the humble becoming glorified, Theophilia (wow what a name is that) is a caricature of the same thing happening in life during a fictional series.
In the real world it's the part where Theophilia ever thought she was a Poo Person that's unrealistic.
Anyone else read this?
I thought the concept was interesting he never gains any powers just wish it was longer
Haven't read it. If you like that sort of stuff, there are hundreds of quirkless deku fanfics. I can't vouch for their quality though
Superman is the antithesis of this trope.
Yeah cause Batman beats his shit in every day
The Lego Movie is so based for not doing this, even in the sequel.
Well, you have things like Spidey getting powers from a freak science accident, until no, he's the destined avatar of the Spider-Totem of the Web of Life or some shit.
Or Superman, who yeah has always been an alien but the thing that sets him apart is the good, moral upbringing he got from his adoptive parents, until no, he's good to people and living things because he can see souls or some shit.
it's so fricking bizarre
all china, korea, and america can't stop stealing shit from japan when it comes to comics/animation, but that only makes them more hostile towards japan
if western shit stop trying to be anime-like, you guys will be less insecure
Well, thats the bump limit. Was strange to have a f/a/ke thread reach its conclusion without posts getting pruned or the whole thread deleted. Funny thing is that I dont think you'd be able to discuss it the same way on the proper board.
because its easy way to write why the main character is the only one who can do it
also easy way to give them power with out having them earn it
One of the mha villains was literally just a woman with a sniper's rifle. She wasn't even doing unrealistic numbers or feats with her gun, we've beaten her distance records irl. That could've been deku bro
This is the most unintentionally hilarious thing I have ever read
All Might makes Deku bento and cries instead of helping heroes reassure the public because in Hori's mind this is the most a quirkless human can do to help
