I can answer that question. You see 99.9999999% of modern "journalists" are just freelance writers. They write an article, farm it out to distributors online, those articles are posted (anyone can do this btw), and they are paid like .0001 cents per view. Well to you and me making 19 cents for a days work isn't a very good deal, but to Mondogumbo Diginiropoopoopeepee from Bumfrick Egypt that 19 cents buys your family a weeks worth of dirt pies. Pretty much everything like this online is farmed out to third worlders now because they will work for slave wages.

What saved disney in 1980s was Whos Framing Roger Rabbit and The little mermaid, so I guess they should make noir stuff with cartoon breasts, and colorful animations for little girls. And the huge flop was an animation based on welsh shit, so ignore those frickers

        Anonymous

They already do this. And it probably kills more projects than it allows to go forward. A movie has to appeal to certain audience segments, meaning they think those segments will buy tickets. Like with nu-wars, they knew young men would show up already, so they tried to hit additional segments like girls and blacks and homos by adding ray and fin and Adam driver. They know little white girls will show up to the little mermaid, so they made her black to try to get little black girls to show up too and goose the numbers. If a movie just hits one demographic like white incels, it just doesn't get made anymore.

I mean, maybe, but we still all went to TFA, right? We've all seen the little girls cosplaying as rey. I'm not saying it's the smartest strategy for the long-term, but just saying "who is this for" like that'll solve the problem is moronic. They need to maximize the "who" it's for in order to make the most money. The solution is obviously to make smaller movies that need not appeal to such a broad audience in order to make it's money back. An anon suggested it up thread but was told to take his meds lol. He's right.

              >I mean, maybe
its happened over and over again. a GREAT example is that halo series they made on the assumption that
              >halogays would watch anything
              >they could draw new audiences
the halogays weren't interested because of all the shit they did to try to "draw new audiences" and "the new audiences" weren't interested because they already knew they didn't like halo.

Star wars being out of the hands of a petulant moron restored some faith in the franchise, then disney wars peaked with that first movie and exponentially declined into what we have now, shows literally no one is watching.

              >but just saying "who is this for" like that'll solve the problem is moronic. They need to maximize the "who" it's for in order to make the most money.
Girls aren't going to turn out en masse for action movies. Boys aren't going to turn out en masse for romcoms. Americans aren't going to turn out en masse for anti-American movies. Studios need just a bit of common sense. It boggles my mind that studios don't know this, but they clearly don't.

              >The solution is obviously to make smaller movies that need not appeal to such a broad audience in order to make it's money back.
Well yeah smaller budgets = less risk.
Smaller budgets = can be open to new IP (as we have seen ALL IP has a shelf life). The more you use the IP, the quicker people tire of it.

It's not just that it's infeasible in the long-term, it's that it ultimately kills your brand in the long-term. There's a difference between making mediocre movies and making movies people actively hate. What they did with Star Wars wasn't simply to overexpose the brand, they made it toxic.

This. I'm tired of the "they included women so now it sucks" argument. You can make things that appeal to both. I know, because Disney USED TO DO EXACTLY THAT! Feel like I'm taking LSD here, you just need attractive actress and men who don't spend the whole runtime getting shit on for no reason!
Disney spent the last decade or two shitting on straight White men with the stated reason of appeasing coloreds, homosexuals, and holes; and when any White guy complained about not getting any of this representation, he was told to go watch all the old stuff. Well guess what, now we're doing that and you're getting no money because we already own the DVDs.

That's how conservative minds work: they want to return to their childhood, and its real or imagined better days. What that ultimately is is subjective to the particular conservative. It's not a political idealogy so much as a tantrum.

That isn't political, but proceeds from a similar impulse. Progressives lack the shame required to mask their childish or base interests. The same behavior in conservative circles is shamed, so it surfaces in different ways. That's why you can usually tell what sins a conservative is secretly commiting by what they denounce the loudest. I'm honestly concerned by how many in the alt-right bang on about pedophiles.

It was the movie that Tolkien had the foresight to avoid. Disney has a formula, the formula doesn't work with many stories. DC manages to be way too scary for little kids and way too silly for everyone else at the same time. The books are good, Disney's take on the books was doomed to failure. And a random pretty redhead because thank you for reminding me Labour DC.

Go back in time a prevent “The Last Jedi” from being released. That’s the movie that opened the floodgates and forever changed the relationship between the fandom and the studios. >TLJ was shit but Rian at least ATTEMPTED something innovative
This kind of apologetics for TLJ is just stupefying to see. TLJ is an atrocious film. It's not just a bad Star Wars movie, it's an abysmally written movie, period. It's full of gaping plot holes and inconsistencies from scene to scene. We literally have a scene where one character kills herself to stop another character from killing himself and telling him that it's important to live rather than die, and then immediately dying as a result of her doing exactly what she stopped him from doing. It's mind bogglingly stupid and treated like some epic emotional moment. And this is just one of several follies in the script. The inconsequential side plot that eats up a third of the film. Betrayal by a character we met 20 minutes ago being treated as some kind of major twist. A slow speed space chase that characters can leave from whenever they want, but don't. And many more besides. I can write thousands of words on how badly written this film is before I even touch what it did to Star Wars and its characters, which is just the shit frosting on the turd cake.

            Anonymous

I agree in that truly terrible movies are more interesting to critique than bland retreads of older films. TFA does have its own idiotic plot holes, but on the whole its primary sin is a lack of imagination.

        Anonymous

        >The Force Awakens is where it started going wrong. Why do people pretend it isn't just as shit as TLJ or even worse?
Agreed. TLJ was shit but Rian at least ATTEMPTED something innovative. He failed but TFA was like AI wrote the movie, then AI made edits to said movie.

TFA was always going to be defined by what came after it. It's a thoughtless, shameless, embarassingly safe ANH rip-off, but a lot of people accepted it as a necessary evil to get the films up and running again. Rian looked at TFA and thought "Disney is copying the OT? in that case, I'm gonna subvert expectations, hee hee" and derailed every single plot point TFA set up while setting nothing up for the next film. Of course, it was the right decision to deviate from the OT's storyline, but TLJ botched it and triggered humiliating levels of course correction (sigh, sheev is back).

I think it's fair to describe TLJ as the best movie of the trio, or at the very least the one most worthy of discussion. But that's not an achievement. The sequel trilogy as a whole makes for a much better discussion - why did Disney take one of the biggest film IPs in history and start a trilogy without any plan of which direction to take it in?

          Anonymous

I think the answer is simply "Star Wars sells, we just spent a fortune on it, everyone just pumping out movies, tv shows and toys and lets make some money go go go". It was always a product that sold itself to them, they didn't see the need to plan anything out. Hell, they probably think planning gets in the way of "Adjusting to market demand". If they plan ahead they can't adjust to what will sell most or some other ridiculous reason.

          Anonymous

JJ is moronic for making a remake and marketing it as a sequel. Rian is moronic for prematurely ending every plot thread that JJ set up for him. Neither of these films are good and both of them deserve ridicule for what they did.

          >why did Disney take one of the biggest film IPs in history and start a trilogy without any plan of which direction to take it in?
If you've ever been in a room full of "creative consultants" or marketing people, then you fully understand that there was no plan.

What audiences are crying out for in entertainment are people with creative visions that can tell a story, and the sad reality is that these types of directors are marginalised now because academia has deliberately pushed back against auteur theory for the better part of 30 years. Movies are merely studio productions, they are not led by people with a creative direction. When Disney hires a competent director, it's almost the same effect as casting a famous star, they want a name and that's it.

TFA played it safe and took no chances, so as a result it wasn’t a very good movie.

But at least JJ’s “mystery box” set something up with potential. It offered us mysteries and questions and left me wanting to see where things went.

But then, either they had no plan for the skeleton of the trilogy, or Rian Johnson completely threw out that plan to make a movie that shit on the audience’s curiosity.
Rey is nobody, Snoke is nobody and he’s dead, Luke had no secret plan and has become a nobody and is dead. Poe is an butthole now for no reason, Finn and Hux are both bad jokes. Rose was a complete waste of time, I feel bad for her actress.

All of the amazing theories fans had, all of the potential, it was just thrown out and the answer to all of it was “nothing.” Every Chekhov’s gun left unfired, and many of them thrown into the fire.

I had bad feelings when I found out the three films would have three directors. It told me they didn’t know where they were going, and the disaster of TLJ proves that.

So no, TFA wasn’t a good film, but it might have set us up for something great if only the people who wrote episode 8 knew frick all about Star Wars.

          Anonymous

You have it so backwards. There was zero potential in the shitty mystery boxes, and Rian Johnson actually set up for something new and interesting in the way that he burned all that shit down. Any answer to any of those mystery boxes would have sucked. Who was Snoke? Who the frick cares? He sucked. The only interesting thing going on was the chemistry between Rey and Kylo and the fact that they seemed to have more in common with each other than they did with these ancient roles they were expected to fall into.

Admittedly the movie wasn't great and the setup was rough, but I had actual optimism at the end of that movie. Unfortunately they would have needed a little originality to make it work, and JJ is completely incapable of that.

bob iger is going to go down as the man who killed disney. if he had just retired and stayed away nobody would have pointed the finger at him. now that he is back not only are people blaming him for the current flops disney is pumping out, they are looking back at all his billion dollar acquisitions he made and starting to see they were a mistake.

he bought pixar, pixar makes nothing but garbage now. he bought star wars, the franchise went from the biggest cash cow in the world, even during the prequels era where public reception was bad, to being unable to sell movies or toys. he bought fox just to get the marvel ips they had and everyone cheered, but now the mcu is dying and they can't get an ff movie out and they have to respect the contracts of old x-men actors and can't recast for a few more years.

every poor decision iger made could have been passed along to chapik if iger had let it, but instead he let chapik take the fall too quickly and is trying to right a ship that is currently filling with water. disney's biggest struggle right now is they lack a significant war chest to fall back on in hard times because iger pissed away all the money they had in the bank.

      >pixar makes nothing but garbage now
This is the problem at heart..
Why did Pixar become trash? Pixar had a really good track record pre-Disney; and as I understand it they function semi-independent, where Disney is just the parent company that is doing laissez faire parenting.

You have two studios that both hit the same market of family content, and they more or less independently of each other begins to produce crap around the same time.

John Lasseter being split between Pixar and Disney Animation Studios has a lot to do with that, I think. Not that I think he's some demi-god, but he had a vision and told people no, then he got canned. Neither studio has a strong lead to guide them to where they should go, so with nobody wanting to step on toes a lot more is permitted and goes unchallenged. Combine that with the hot metoo/PC climate that was running rampant for over a decade and you have a lot of people keeping their heads down and doing what's safe to keep their jobs.

I've been under the assumption that they're doing this shit knowing full well it's potential box office poison and are just too committed to the ideology to care. If they're genuinely shocked by the backlash then it's even worse than I thought. They could stop being deliberately contrarian any time they wanted to but if this recent batch of films is unironically their best effort then they're just fricking doomed

And another issue is they've devalued their own IP's so much that even if they pull their heads out of their asses it'll be to diminishing returns. The X-Men and FF will generate much more interest than anything they have going right now but by then it'll have been several years since anything good came out of the MCU and people will just be tired of the concept in general. And they've done the live action remake thing to death so that's not bailing them out either.

I was born in 1989, when Little Mermaid came out. I spent my childhood during Disney's animation renaissance, so to me Disney was synonymous with amazing quality movies. They lost me with the shift to 3DCG, even if some of those films were okay, they just did not have the same feeling as the 2D ones, even the less successful ones that I still really liked.

I think Disney started to flounder badly when they started aggressively acquiring other studios. Pixar, Marvel, Lucas Film... they were bolstering their IP portfolio to make up for a lack of creative vision. It's obvious in retrospect, now.

A good part of the problem is that the studios are in NY and LA which are infested with dumbshit leftists. So all these zoomers and millennials look around and say "we all want woke stuff. Everyone we know want woke stuff. People on twitter want woke stuff". And the studios listened.
Problem is, a majority of people don't want woke stuff. They just want good stories they can relate to. They don't want politics either left or right. They want entertainment. How tf is this difficult to understand.

Don't accept this premise at all. Politics can be done well if it's thoughtful and committed to exploring various discourses. Even in escapist shit like superhero films, it can be, and has been done. The problem with Disneyslop is that it pretends to be "political" but it has no substance. The Little Mermaid is a perfect example because a black little mermaid could work if you actually had a story centered around it, but it doesn't! It's just like "hey, black people are here in this colonial little kingdom and everyone gets along, how quaint! Got a problem, chud?" It's just bizarre.

We've had multiple billion dollar box offices since Covid. People still absolutely show up to theaters for films if they're films people wanna see. People haven't wanted to see Disney's films for a while now. They reluctantly went to see Marvel or Star Wars films hoping for a return to form of earlier entries, but you can only be disappointed so many times before you stop bothering to meet Disney halfway.

        I saw it.
It’s a common nu-leftist fallacy that it’s better to have no standards of morality than it is to have standards but have some individuals who hold those standards be hypocrites.
I don’t care what Senator Frickhead (R) from buttfrickasota did. Maybe he’s a hypocrite but that doesn’t mean we all are.

If you wanna be a huge homosexual, go for it but keep it out of my life and away from little children.

The one thing James Rolfe had spot on that modern Hollywood can’t seem to fathom (or refuses to) was when he said basically, “when you guys watch my videos, you’re not here to think about politics or all the bad stuff going on in the world. My videos are here to give you some fun and escape from all that.”

Modern Hollywood “entertainment” is not entertaining because it isn’t mean to entertain you. It’s meant to CORRECT you.

          Anonymous

The minute I read James Rolfe I got twisted trying to figure out who that was before I remembered the theme song.
just getting that out, but yes I 100% agree and I AM huge homosexual but obviously that's my business you don't care nor do you because hey that's my preference and even me bringing it up here is completely uncalled for no one asked no one cares.
And that's why exactly as you said the modern entrainment isn't entertaining by the reality that it isn't trying to entertain you it's trying to TELL you something.
What really gets to me is this is somehow put down liberals ......sure I concede the main propagators of this media are "liberal" but I'm not fricking claiming them, I'm embarrassed by them honestly and I can't even state that without suddenly being a nazi meanwhile we have all this shit telling us how to feel and be and somehow that's fine yeah that's not being a nazi.like can't we see what's happening?
