I'm a Greg Land apologist. I like his inks and general sense of design.
In the art world he's a tracer, in the ad/graphic world he's a genius

These aren't his inks but his linework in the 90's was very silky and smooth. I don't think his modern work is great but it's borderline serviceable, the Cartoonist Kayfabe guys said it well when they said there's a line between professional tracing and amateur ones and while Land's art is obnoxious to look at these days, it's a "competent" enough to work as a publication.

He's also barely done anywork in the last 8 years, the last new interior credit I can find from him is like 2018.

Is this another guy that hates drawing feet?

You foot fetishists would be happier watching Tarantino movies instead of looking at cape comics for your fix and complaining when you don't get it.

He delivers his work on time, to a standard that's "good enough" for the average cape comic, and his co-workers don't have any problems getting on with him. All of that matters more to editors who hire him than "does he trace from photo references?" They don't care about that at all.

A guy at a comic store once told me that he is one of the most popular artists. His comics sell out almost immediately

Photo reference artists suck, full stop

The result is distinct enough to justify the reference.

      Lots of artists use references.

He's a mastermind schemer with blackmail dirt on literally everyone. The secret puppetmaster pulling strings of the entire industry.

Nobody cares about tracing except ~~*artists*~~. What the readers, editors, collectors, etc. want is comics that look good and arrive on time.

But Land doesn't meet that standard.

      >Nobody cares about tracing except ~~*artists*~~.
A lot of readers get really uppity about it and act like it's a reason for an artist to be fired and blacklisted. Unless they like the artist, in which case it's a homage, not tracing.

Actual comic artists in the industry tend to care less about someone copying from their old work than if they're copying from what they're doing right now, as a guy doing that is likely directly competing with them for the same jobs, IIRC this happened in 90s X-Men where one of the filler artists during Joe Madureira's run was copying and tracing from his work.

I don't care if Land rips shit off, his art is ugly.

Reminder that for all the standards not applied to the visual art, the writing somehow has even less QA.

Publishers don't care about worki ethics as long as people buy stuff.
