They're remaking snow white, the German fairy tale where the main character had skin as white as snow, with a south American brownie. And they're not only proud of that, they're smug about it.

Tim Burton catches heat for making his gloomy europeanesque characters white.

Hollywood has this weird trend of thinking they can just cast a korean as a japanese guy or a japanese guy as a chinese and no one will notice.

Based. I hate the weird Hollywood notion that any Asian is fine. Remember that shitty, generic action movie Ninja Assassin from back in the day? Cast was full of Vietnamese and Korean actors. Like one Japanese dude on the cast lol.

as long as an actor passes as japanese for a japanese roll it is believable for a film audience. obviously a philippino wouldn't make sense to cast as japanese, or a thai/ indian, but koreans and chinese fit the bill.

It’s an American made series. Not a Jap one. Hollywood still cares about stars even though star power has diminished. So if there is a known Asian actor they’ll want him in it over some unknown Jap

hollywood is only anti-asian if it gets in the way of being anti-white. Japanese people in a film about Japan where the English protagonist is cast as a middle-eastern mutt actor still fulfills the anti-white hiring quota.

The story is based on historical events and people. John Blackthorne is based on William Adams, an English shipwright who washed ashore in Japan and became a samurai retainer of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who is the historical basis for Toranaga. In fact the book so closely follows the broad sweep of historical events that Clavell essentially just changed the names of all the important people from history and otherwise kept the major events the same.

It's historical fantasy inspired by real events. But the costuming, language, cultural elements are all on point.

The only major inaccuracies are the languages being spoken. None of them are correct. But that is a given when doing a period piece, the languages are never accurate because the audience needs to understand what's being said. There's already enough complaints that so much of the show is in Japanese and requires subtitles, imagine if they did full accuracy:
      >middle-Japanese that even native Japanese speakers would struggle to understand
      >Portuguese for basically every part that is currently in English
      >Church Latin
      >Early Modern English and Dutch in a couple scenes

This has actually stirred quite a bit of debate on the Japanese web. Some Japanese are mocking other Japanese who would normally decry "political correctness" for praising Sanada for doing this, saying that stance is hypocritical and stupid of them. They point to their own works like Kingdom (a Three Kingdoms story made with all Japanese cast) or the Rose of Versailles. On the other hand some Japanese are really happy since they felt for a long time, Hollywood presented them in a weird, lazy way using non-Japanese to play Japanese, using anachronistic or even fake ideas and elements and passing them off as Japanese, or using Chinese/Korean things to pass off as Japanese. The push for authenticity here is refreshing for some Japanese viewers.

Still others are disappointed it has a white guy focus again, while on the flip side others are hoping this means they'll get a Yasuke adaptation soon too

I thought scientists debunked fire arrows?

      Anonymous

There's no real evidence that fire arrows were ever used to meaningful effect in any battle or siege that we have records and physical evidence for. That doesn't mean they were never used, it just means that they probably weren't very effective or else they'd have been used more and we'd have evidence of it.

Those aren't arrows. They are more like ballistas. They used to fire big ass arrows from these boxes with gunpowder. It was a stop-gap technology.
