Godzilla had been in plenty of fights, but during Vs Gigan he got this giant gyser of blood shooting out of him after getting cut, and that was novel at the time. Same reason why Mechagodzilla is such a fan favorite, every time he shows up he just DESTROYS Godzilla in their first bout before Godzilla comes back to kick his ass. Gigan did damage in a time when it felt more kid friendly, that's it.
I like any kind of cyborg kaiju, Gigan, Mechani-kong, Mecha Ghidorah. I like the Frankenstein style hubris of taking a dangerous giant monster and making it even more dangerous because frick it, what's the worst that could happen if you gave a giant space lizard scythe hands?
Why? He's one of like, 3 Kaiju total who actually have a personality.
