Wasn't he just robbing the place and killed Matt Damon when he got caught in the act?
They show him being fired from the police during the movie so I always thought he had to resort to crime to feed himself.
That's exactly what I thought. It was pretty obvious imo. A nice way to bring catharsis to the character via a happy coincidence or act of God, if you will.
It's also more poetic that the criminal character (i.e. Damon) is brought down by another criminal (whom he inadvertently created by getting Wahlberg fired from the police force).
During the whole movie, Damon thought crime was good.
Then at the end, he was shown that crime is also bad because crime sometimes gets people killed (because he is killed in a robbery).
Glad you agree. I knw Scorcese had to have evolved from just making criminals look cool in his pictures to sending a clear message that crime only leads to bad things in the end.

Yeah but the ending message is that he's stuck in his own personal hell, in a life he never chose, with no one he can trust or love (his wife left him because he was clearly hiding something). Infernal Affairs has a lot of references to buddhist hell.
>An alternate ending for the film was shot in order to comply with Article 25 (7) of the Chinese Film Administration Regulations specifying that films cannot propagate obscenity, gambling or violence, or abet to commit crimes.[3] In the original (Hong Kong) ending, Lau concealed his true identity as a Triad spy and identified himself as a police officer to avoid legislative punishment. Therefore, the original ending was deemed to promote criminal activity and injustice, and an alternate ending was filmed to make the film suitable for mainland China. In the alternate ending, inspector Cheung discovers evidence of Lau's criminal activity and immediately arrests Lau outside the elevator. This alternate ending was shown in mainland China and Malaysia.
yeah he was clearly there to rob matt damon, kill him, and then have sex with him. he was the real criminal all along, and the ending really makes you think!

He kills him and leaves without taking anything, what was he robbing, according to you?
Dumbass. Blu ray didn't exist when this film was released.

I'm pretty sure the police and surely CIA had that yechnology way before it came out en masse.

Blu-ray came out in June of 2006, the departed opened at the box office in October 2006. Sullivan could easily have gotten a black market copy of an internal affairs blu-ray. Which would make it all the more valuable to a kino connoisseur, like dignam.
>oh shit I just killed the occupant of this apartment and realized it's my former police colleague, and policemen takes it 10x more personally when you go after one of them >okay I should leave buuuuuuut not before doing 4 trips up and down the stairs to carry his plasma 60-inch TV and all his Funko pop collectibles to my van
He realized he had to fricking scram because the Boston police would be all over him in a matters of hours when Damon was found dead in his apartment.
That's exactly what I thought. It was pretty obvious imo. A nice way to bring catharsis to the character via a happy coincidence or act of God, if you will.
No, he was actually drunk and thought that Matt Damon's apartment was his own, so he broke in. When Damon entered, he shot him in self-defense. He then ran to go tell the police.
Yeah scorcese confirmed this in the directors cut commentaries, but he left it up in the air as to how he coincidentally broke into damon's flat by chance. I think scorcese was implying that that little detail was a breaking the 4th wall metaphor, just like it cuts to the rat, obviously a metaphor for how rats like wahlberg always leave a sinking ship
Hardest I’ve laughed in months. Do you have a venmo or something I can send some cash? Without going into much detail I’m going through some stuff and your post kind of lifted me up a bit.
Wasn't he just robbing the place and killed Matt Damon when he got caught in the act?

I'm not the OP and I'm baffled that is somehow my most (You)'ed post in months. I couldn't even remember the scene that well when I posted so wasn't even sure if the joke was going to land.
Is there really nothing else going on Cinemaphile these days? Fricking shithole.
Never gave it much thought but basically this is what I gathered from that scene. With his time off he did his own investigation. Put two and two together. Shot him making sure he didn’t leave any evidence. This thread is full of morons. Thought summer was over.
>the password is my name >they gave it to me in case I’d have to explain myself to someone like you
With Queean gone he knew the only one with access to the undercover file was the one who killed Costigan. And the fact that cops & criminals in the investigation kept conveniently dying while Sullivan walked away unscathed was a pretty big context clue.
Wahlberg probably poses as an exterminator to gain entrance to these buildings he robs, and releases rats beforehand so his presence does not arouse suspicion.
Before Damon steps into his apartment, we see a dog that looks to be on edge (probably because of the rat population released by Wahlberg).
makes sense. that's why he was wearing what he was wearing (the covers on the shoes, and the stylish exterminator uniform) as part of his cover as an exterminator
More than likely he got wind that Matt Damon's character was meeting with Jack Nicholson's, or he got a report that the bullets that killed Jack's character matching his gun, or something.
Basically, no one is smart enough or careful enough to not get caught. If there is someone looking for you it's usually only a matter of time before you get caught.
I always thought that the chick opened the envelope Dicaprio left and that envelope included some safeties.
One of those safeties was to contact Quignam she finds Quignam info through her job with the police department or whatever and gives him the rest of the envelope which includes a copy of the tapes
Its not really explained on the movie but thats the only logic explanation imo
>get into shouting match with woman >criticize her profession and call her names >storm out >catch up with her a few minutes later >ask her out >fall in love and frick
am I supposed to believe this is in any way believable?
Wasn't he just robbing the place and killed Matt Damon when he got caught in the act?

HAHAHAHAHAHA are you joking? Are you this fricking stupid? What the frick is wrong with you?

My quads confirm it, I guess lol.
legit made me laugh
in the original movie the bad guy wins IIRC, couldn't let this happen in Hollywood I guess..
Yeah but the ending message is that he's stuck in his own personal hell, in a life he never chose, with no one he can trust or love (his wife left him because he was clearly hiding something). Infernal Affairs has a lot of references to buddhist hell.

He had that big loose jacket on. Probably stuffed the merchandise in there so as to not appear suspicious when leaving the building.
What merchandise did Matt have in his apartment?
see
Criterion collection Blu-ray for the infernal affairs trilogy

best post
god I hate the plot of the movie so much it's unreal
Probably the real stolen computer chips. Maybe he cut a deal with the asian mafia for the info.
Man this film really needs a sequel to tie up these loose ends
>oh shit I just killed the occupant of this apartment and realized it's my former police colleague, and policemen takes it 10x more personally when you go after one of them

Maybe he was a CIA informant too, like Costello.
Dem apples
Marky Mark always has something up his sleeve
>leaves without taking anything
He took Damon's life
such exquisite bait
Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe frick yourself.
And Dignam hates Sullivan for tailing Queenan, so of course he robs him. That he has to kill him is a bonus.
No, he was actually drunk and thought that Matt Damon's apartment was his own, so he broke in. When Damon entered, he shot him in self-defense. He then ran to go tell the police.

Thanks Anon, I'm honored.

Why are you claiming his OC as your own?

Nice one
Lmao if that was an intentional joke you should do standup bro. You’re funny af
the sad thing is, i hear zoomers reach similar kind of conclusions related to simplest plots. really an unbelievably moronic generation
Hardest I've laughed in a while
fpbp. pretentious anons will disagree, but you're 100% correct.
include me in the screen capture reddit
no you moron he worked for Costello too and was covering his tracks
Good one
Top tier bait. Really thought this was some stupid frick asking a serious question for a second.
Thanks I already had the post ready and saved in a notepad file before creating the thread lol
>the cop becomes the criminal and kills the criminal who had become a cop
utter pottery. bravo scorsese.
>samegay posts literally a minute later
WE DID IT REDDIT! INCLUDE ME IN THE EPIC BASED SCREENCAP!

You. I Like you.
He got one of Leo's tapes. The end.
Never gave it much thought but basically this is what I gathered from that scene. With his time off he did his own investigation. Put two and two together. Shot him making sure he didn’t leave any evidence. This thread is full of morons. Thought summer was over.
>Thought summer was over.
It is, why arent you at school?
I’m a fricking boomer friendo.
>hurr durr you’re 30 and still on Cinemaphile.
It’ll happen to YOU!
Im 32, but
that's not my iq, unlike
You! Here's a haiku
He was visited by the ghost of Queenan
He's wicked smaht.
b***h woman sent the tape to him
>the password is my name

With Queean gone he knew the only one with access to the undercover file was the one who killed Costigan. And the fact that cops & criminals in the investigation kept conveniently dying while Sullivan walked away unscathed was a pretty big context clue.
That seems a bit far-fetched to me.
He was Frank Costello's secret son
the clues are there
>all that fricking and no sons.
I think there was an implication that Costello had abused Sullivan when he was a kid. Hence his hold over him.
Haha I’m pretending to be moronic too!
Not nearly enough.
what's the matter never heard of Shakespeare dumbass?
how did the rat know to run across matt damon's balcony? Did he know?
Wahlberg probably poses as an exterminator to gain entrance to these buildings he robs, and releases rats beforehand so his presence does not arouse suspicion.

Scorsese really is a hack
Youtube film scholars cracked it a while back.
hes the guy that does his job
How come that old lady in the hallway wouldn't even let matt damon pet her dog?
Reminds me of that scene in Sopranos before Palmice gets whacked a dog barks at him.
>LE INCLUDE ME IN THE SCREENCAP OF THE SAMEGAGGIN OP
fricking redditors I swear
include me in the screencap when it features this dissenting post
we'll let you have the next one bro

I only watched the first Infernal Affairs film. The mole in the police force doesn't die at the end of the film like he did in Scorsese's version.
he's transported to Moral Hell though
