how did the boys get so bad in season 2

season one was amazingly entertaining and really mad me want to watch more and eight episodes into season two I never want to watch this again, why'd they ruin it?

Honestly what did you expect. Its edgelord shit and Amazon is a hundred-billion dollar company. Of course they neutered it.
I'm surprised it got made at all. If Marvel had not blown up no one would have touched it.
Amazon will suffer since the public is tired of capeshit.

I hate capeshit but we all know why nobody cares about that shit anymore.

The boys could have been a breath of fresh air if they kept it edgy antihero series instead of pushing their agendas and political narrative.

Literally episode 7 was when my suspension of disbelief and ability to watch without cringing was shattered. They literally painted the image and life of a fat basement dwelling manbaby neck beard living in his mother’s house lurking Cinemaphile AND watching nothing but Fox News (which also apparently plays in every display tv on the street like it’s the 1980s, then immediately expect us to believe he’d go out and buy a gun and start shooting up convenience stores. I could probably have handled him cucking at the last minute or imagining it, but no, he literally blasts the shopkeep in the face and walks out like it’s no country for old men except crying too. Just like how the Jan 6 images of politicians hiding under benches juxtaposed to the image of the old woman waving at the camera made me question the sanity of these people, this shit had me questioning what reality they live in.

        >Comics were anti-mainstream (superheroes can be corrupt buttholes too, and sometimes antiheroes are just flat out villains themselves, too much power in any set of hands is bad)
        >Tv show is utterly mainstream wokeslop (power is good as long as it’s in the hands of a woman of color, all men are evil, corporations are bad) trying to be anti-mainstream,
It’s hard to present your anti-Marvel/DC show as a dark mirror image of Marvel/DC when you endorse the exact same kind of braindead progressive values that are driving Marvel/DC into utter irrelevance and creative and financial bankruptcy.

A Train is a joke too. He got disowned by his cripple brother because A Train doesn’t take responsibility for his actions. The white chick is the one who owned him beyond belief by giving him Blue Hawks heart and making a movie about his life, replacing his brother with Tom Hanks and making A Train out to be an ex gang banger.

Deep is supposed to be a parody of Aquaman. And The Deep inflicts a lot of that damage on himself by desperately trying to kiss Homelander’s ass. Though I am curious how they handle Deep’s ex in the next season. Gotta assume they’re going to base it off Amber Heard and she’ll get exposed for being a control freak who only used Deep for clout

                Anonymous

That would humanize Deep too much. He’s supposed to be a comic relief meme character. I doubt they’ll remember her with all the plates still in the air.

She's gonna play a role in the season, simply because she's going on all the talk shows talking about her experience with him, and on top of that writing a book. She's being played up to be The Deep's antagonist, and it'll work because she's manipulative.

I'm gonna at least chuckle if they make it where her book comes out before The Deep's did, making him write his own autobiography to try and get people to like him again.

Yet The Deep, Homelander, and Soldier Boy are far and away the most popular characters. And Tek Knight was the breakout character of Gen V who fans are begging to appear in the main series. Meanwhile not a single person asked for Starlight to appear in Gen V.

            Anonymous

Starr is great in the role, but also Homelander is maybe the character they've fricked up the least in the adaptation. And while what they did with his relation to Madeline Stillwell was something I liked, they did frick up by splitting based Stillwell into two different characters, particularly Stan Edgar. Stillwell wasn't a boss at the company, much less the public face of it

Neither was Black Noir, Hughie’s girlfriend was a white redhead not a mystery mutt, Frenchie wasn’t actually French but a mentally ill man who had constructed a French backstory for himself after surviving a massacre of Foreign Legion troops, Deep was black, Silver Kincaid was so white she was almost albino, Stormfront was a late middle-aged man, the list goes on.
Of all the characters in the show the one that is closest to the books is probably Mother’s Milk.

When did comic art become trash?

        Anonymous

It's been semi trash since the 60s during the era of underground comics where most artists didn't have art education backgrounds but could still self publish. Around the late 90s is when we entered the digital era where you didn't really need good colorists, inkers, or pencilerw anymore. That's why most modern marvel and DC comics are just plain awful, not just in the writing but the highly generic art. The most skilled era was probably around the early 1900s-1930s when it was illustrators working for newspapers. Quality kinda dropped after that because comic panels on pages became a thing, which meant an artist has to do tons of different figures and backgrounds per page per book, which needed to be out monthly. That's why comics switched to a setting where the artist had assistants like letterers, writer, inker, and colorist when the newspaper days one artist did all of it.

I still think some of the most striking art was in the golden age and some in the 80s when new styles were starting to come out.

Maeve's role is over at this point though. Her story is finished and she's probably only going to show up again in the Series Finale. If anything aside from Hugie and Starlight, she'll make it out in the best of shape.

    >theres now a "the boys cinematic universe" with multiple spinoffs and a million crossovers and promotional events
I can't say I didn't see this coming but holy shit it is EVERYTHING it used to claim to hate. I haven't seen s3 but apparently the main cast has superhero drugs now so the entire show is just superhumans punching each other instead of the original premise of them outsmarting them and using espionage?

      Anonymous

The main cast always had super powers in the comics, because how the frick can you tackle super powered psychos as a regular human being? They're more powerful than most street supers but utterly dwarfed by the seven, nevermimd Homelander himself.

Did they really not get V injections until later on in the show? How moronic.

        >because how the frick can you tackle super powered psychos as a regular human being?

That was the interesting hook anon. Killing the guy with invincible skin via exploiting his specific power and it's limitations.
That they are just punching eachother now is fricking boring, it's not as bad as season 2 where they have like four scenes end with the good guy saying I'm blackmailing you now so you can't kill me.
Honestly the show is just a mess of bad writing and really not worth watching.

          Rip.

In the comics they still can't just go toe to toe with most of the people they fight. It helps to make the gap between normal people and supers even more apparent, where even these suped up hero hit squad psychos are nothing compared to homelander or maeve. One of the big things in the comics is how homelander is a one in a million or more chance and was bathed in V since the moment of his conception and is basically the perfect V subject and no one can even come close. Its cheapened in the tv series when butcher is able to actually exchange blows with him (when he does get the shot) + the storm front and soldier boy shit.

            Anonymous

iirc Homelander and the rest of the original Seven were engineered from scratch using V, which is why they are the most powerful lot in the planet. everyone else either got V as part of experiments or by accident with a diluted version of V (the one that Mallory had access to cost I think a couple billions a shot, and it only makes them durable, not super-powered)

              Anonymous

              >it only makes them durable, not super-powered
It makes them durable and super strong, remember Hughie accidentally punched Blarney wiener almost in half and killed him.

                Anonymous

                From the comics:
                >makes you about fifty times more durable than a normal person
                >enhances your strength by a factor of fifteen to twenty
                >drastically slows ageing
                >turns your shit blue

It's insane. Instead of giving the boys enhanced physicals they're giving them full on powers that put them on par with the seven. Any claim that the show is superior to the comic has been slowly eroded. The comic may have been edgy but narratively it was more stable than having writers do several reworks to fit in Amazons expanded universe moneymaking scheme. The micro-man sounding explosion gore scene was just as or more crude than any joke Ennis made in the original run.

They did indeed have superpowers but primarily only used them for self defense (or in Female’s case, to also do hits for the mob).
Butcher was a great character because he specialised in destroying off-the-rails supers, and reining in Vought’s attempts to get Supers into national defense, by blackmail, manipulation and psychological warfare.
TV show Butcher is a moron, comic Butcher was a fricking genius.

It’s amazing how neutered Butcher is in the show. Any subtlety to his characterisation is completely gone. The comic took its time in establishing just what a complete and utter unhinged bastard he was, and even then managed to keep a sympathetic dimension to his character by expanding on how profoundly his relationship with his wife had saved him from his worst impulses.

They’re not moronic so much as arrogant and hubristic, and their Achilles heel is the difference between their public persona and their actual persona. Getting outed as a sadist, pedo, rapist or druggie is their biggest fear, and one that comic Butcher exploits to the full.

i'm guessing season 1 had a lot more planning and thought spent on it. there are actual character arcs and development for characters like hughie, a-train and starlight. the episodes seem focused on the plot. on the other hand, it feels like season 2 was horribly rushed, and almost like the original writers were no longer involved. the episodes are meandering to say the least, and there's very little substance to any of it, which they try to make up by doubling down on the blood, the macabre humor and the shock value. it's like they had someone speedwatch the first season and write the second season based on that

Pattern is Season 1 gets big with OG creators. Which makes agenda pushers come for it to meddle . Sometimes from higherups.

Nudity and gore can't carry a show forever. The plane scene and that one female super crushing a dude's head between her thighs were shocking. Each subsequent "shocking" scene just gets less and less memorable.

Amazon is looking to make this their “Shared universe”. Disney has Marvel and Star Wars. Warner Bros has GoT and Harry Potter. Paramount has Spongebob and Star Trek. Netflix is cooking something with Zack Snyder. Where does that leave Prime? Even if the main series ends with some grace, there’s still a mountain of spinoffs to be unleashed.

If you're talking about The Boys them the show actually accomplishes its task. Look at Queen Maeve for example, once Homelander outed her as a lesbian, Vaught made that her entire identify. They're doing it again with A Train's movie, replacing his brother with Tom Hanks and making it out like A Train was this gang banger when he was younger.

The seeds were sown in the first season. The comics, for whatever fault people may find in them, had a clear and simple structure that would have adapted well to a multi-season show. Specifically, that The Boys have to work their way through the lower tiers of superhero teams before the CIA will give them a shot at The Seven. This meant that characterisation and insight into The Seven and the workings of Vought-American could no longer be dripfed to the audience over a longer timescale. Other changes like Hughie not being an immigrant fresh to America robbed the show of any potential to develop the fish-out-of-water aspect of his character, the moronic twist that Butcher’s wife and Homelander’s rape baby survived completely undermined Butcher as a character, made the original Black Noir twist impossible and fricked the narrative in other ways. All these “brilliant” changes by the writers made it increasingly impossible in seasons 2 and 3 to effectively borrow material from the comic and left the show where it is now, a pointless mess treading water, as well as an inability to commit to a tone. You can’t mock cynical corporate pandering to diversity then do the exact same thing yourself. Probably their biggest sin, however, was humanising the superheroes and putting such a capeshit level of emphasis on them as characters. It went from anti-capeshit to just more capeshit.

It’s definitely the subtext. Garth Ennis is a British comic writer who got his start with Crisis and 2000AD, decidedly not superhero fare, and credits the British tradition of war story comics set in WWI and WWII as a major inspiration. Working for American comics, even when he tries to tell an original story like Hitman it always somehow has to come back to/tie into capeshit and there’s definitely a level of frustration with that permeating The Boys. Any superheroes like Annie who might actually be decent people could be seen as a metaphor for artists and writers in the American industry, they may be talented, well-intentioned, good creators but they’re chewed up and spat out by a machine that won’t let them do anything other than create infinitely-recursive stories about idiots in spandex if they want mainstream success and a survivable wage.

The show was greenlit as counterprogramming to squaky clean PG-13 Marvel. They saw a market for a mature rated superhero show and pounced. I don't know why they licensed an obscure 20 year old comic and completely savaged the lore and characters. That's the definition of jobbing. Jobbing is intentional, you lose on purpose to benefit the other guy.

Jobbing to Hughie was his entire plan from issue one. This isn’t Justice League Vs The Consortium of Thunderc**ts, if you want some dumb powerlevel final boss fight that drags on for twenty pages, you’re the kind of tosspot The Boys was actively making fun of.

Comic Butcher needed Hughie because he desperately needed to know that despite getting fricked over by Supes both good and evil, that someone with superpowers could remain fundamentally good.
Butcher died happy knowing that he’d had his revenge and that Hughie would do the right thing going forward.

                >Jobbing to Hughie was his entire plan from issue one
Not his plan, the author's plan for him. And to achieve that, he gets an ungodly amount of plot armor and conveniences.
He should've died along the way as a consequence of his relentless vengeance, and Hughie should've picked up the mantle, but not right at the fricking end after the main conflict is solved. What were they thinking?

Thing is, nobody knew what Butcher’s plan was, he made no secret of hating supes in general and Homelander in particular, but he was also terrified that he was reverting into pre-Becky Butcher only 10x worse for having superpowers .
He needed to know that Hughie wasn’t going to follow in his or Mallory’s footsteps.

                Why a calico?
Also I pay rent to live in a single bedroom that's right next to my landlord. cats, I imagine make more noise and need a little box in my already crowded room.

Name 5 "superheros are as pathetic as normal humans" comics that executed that premise better than Watchmen. Bonus points if they came before Watchmen or didn't rip it off in any way.

Why on earth would I attempt to meet an arbitrary set of criteria specifically created by you to attempt to disprove my opinion?
I reject your ‘rules’ as biased and therefore feel no need to meet them.

You open with an ad hominem and now you reject an honest discussion even though I gave you a chance to elaborate. My opinion remains unchallenged and your comic book knowledge remains unproven, what a waste of time. Have a nice day.

                Anonymous

Ah but you chose a set of unfulfillable criteria not entirely relevant to my point and asked that I meet them, which is intellectually dishonest.
If you’d asked me instead why it is that I regard Watchmen the way I do maybe we could have had a conversation. Sadly you were more interested in winning a point than having a conversation. I grant that the ad hom was uncalled for so I will say sorry for that.

It became obvious that they were stalling to make more seasons - so now it's in a rut where they can't progress the storyline in the slightest.
