    The world was different.
    The internet was smaller.
    Society was less controlled.
Hiveminds weren't common. Words like "fandom" or "fanbase" weren't common.
And most importantly, You weren't born yet.
It was a different, better time.

    >falseflagging as an obnoxious, pretentious Eva snob to get people to shit on Eva
    >falseflagging as a literal kid with an Eva hateboner to get people to praise Eva
Why can't we just have a normal Eva thread without the falseflags?

Real talk EVA threads are a hundred times better ever since Anno said it was mecha, sure they are still terrible but you can have some small discussions about it now.

I don’t understand why so many people shit on Eva. There’s no way you can actually think this show is bad. Is it just mental illness?

      >thing is genuinely niche
      >thing gains a reputation as a "hidden gem"/"cult classic"
      >reputation grows to the point where all but the most hardcore normalgays know about it
      >people get tired of the constant praise/upset that their favorite stuff isn't praised instead/just get a contrarian impulse and start shitting on it now that it's popular
Also remember the internet is basically vocal minorities: the virtual place.
What seems like a lot of people are actually just a handful of very loud, annoying individuals

Try being alive and conscious back in the 90s in the west. Evangelion was only obtainable through VHSs. The movies didn't even come out officially outside of Japan until 2003 or so, I had to become part of (IRL) Otaku circles in order to get someone to lent me fansubbed VHSs of D&R and EoE in 1998, not even specialized stores sold them, it was a fan to fan thing.

Eva aired in latin american television in the 90s and everyone knew about it, sucks to be you.

Just accept that the us didn't care about anime until recently while everyone else has been enjoying it since the 70s.

              I am from latin america.
Locomotion didn't start airing Evangelion until the year 2000, maybe 1999 at most. And that was only the TV series. As I said, if you wanted to see the movies in 1998, you had to have some connections with fansub groups, and for the TV series it was VHS. Also, locomotion wasn't in every cable network and it didn't really got widespread until 2001.
Sucks to be me? Nah I'm fine. It was a fun time to be into anime as a teen.

It wasn't always that way, things only really got stupid when people started making memes about anime and marxism and how you have to be unironic about your ironic shitposting.

It was straight from Japan, totally unexpected, not kid's stuff.
