You base your ego on your niche interests in order to distinguish yourself and to feel important.

Would it hurt to tell you that constantine is a well known character? He's been in TV shows and nearly every comic fan knows of him.

Stop projecting. I don't like this particular individual and rather tell him to frick off. I'm not basing it off being a "true fan" or whatever purity fan bullshit your projecting.

I just don't like him as an individual and I don't want him near things I enjoy

To be honest, there's little worth reading after Carey's run.

Was Carey's run even Delano, Jenkins or even Ennis-tier?

                Anonymous

I, personally, consider it the best overall run of Hellblazer. The most consistent in terms of quality; while Delano, Ennis, and others may be better at certain parts, they're also worse in others.

I'm sure if I re-read the whole series (which I want to do), I'd probably change my opinion a bit, but I don't imagine it'd be by much.
I'll also admit I haven't read anything by Carey that I haven't liked, so maybe his work just suits me.

                Anonymous

It works on a level like Delano because by the end of it, every story was part of a larger overall arc. Everything ties up at the end.

Because it didn’t go off the rail in the end like Ennis’ did. Also it’s Hellblazer in its purest form since Delano more or less molded the character.

Oh I get you, that one was painful especially because of that shitter they hired to do the art. But right after that arc, it really picks up and gets more personal with the Family Man and Golden Child arcs.

There were hints of John having bi-tendencies as a teenager, but he didn't become one until issue #51. It was written by John Smith, a 2000AD comic writer knowing for writing gay as frick characters.

This is a bad deaceiption of john smoth.
He wrote gay as frick characters. But they had personalities and stories that were so good even a homophobe like me rates that poofy armless twat a great writer.

Devlin waugh was the campiest character ive ever read, and it wasnt until john smith got sacked by 2000ad that devlin waughs whole stick was gay vampire.

Fair enough but id honestly say go back and read Indigo Prime, devlin waugh, cradlegrave, new statesmen and firekind.

Some banging stories. And cant remember them being overly gay. Except waugh but he had so many other characteristics, that gay was just a small part.

I legitimately don't think you should. Marathoning Hellblazer is just watching John slowly spiral down the toilet without ever going down the drain. Don't bother unless you were really into drugs in college.

His appearance in Moore's Swamp Thing (his origin) is still my favorite. Then start with Hellblazer #1. Some suggest you stop once it joins Vertigo (mid-way through Ennis' run). You're supposed to read Hellblazer concurrently with Swamp Thing (at that point, by Rick Veitch) and The Sandman (Constantine appears there as well), but it's up to you.

Hellblazer honestly takes a dip in quality when it joins Vertigo and doesn’t pick until the Jenkins run.

Just order or pirate all the TPBs, there are 20+ volumes and they cover the entirety of Hellblazer and various one-shots and minis. This is the best way to read Constantine. You can also give Simon Spurrier's Hellblazer a try first, they are pretty similar in tone, and it's generally a very solid book.

You start by reading Alan Moore's Swamp Thing run (because that's where Constantine started, and Swamp Thing shows up frequently in Constantine).
Then you just read Hellblazer #1 and keep going until it's over.
You could read his other appearances, like in Sandman, Books of Magic, or his New 52 appearances, but they aren't required.

According to Gaiman on Twitter, "the rights situation with [John Constantine] is certainly cirsumscribed right now." That said, Johanna Constantine was already in the comics, so maybe Gaiman owns the rights to HER, so theres no legal issues there.

The only "rights problem" that exists is that JJ Abrams' Bad Robot productions wants to do a Constantine show and is blocking other companies from using him. It's the same reason why Constantine was removed from Legends of Tomorrow. It is the old WB embargo bullshit that they used to do with cartoons all the time.
Gaiman has no IP rights to anything he did with Sandman.

Issue 1 until youre bored of it.
Or if you dont like one weoter, just skip to the next. Most work alone. I think Jenkins is the only one off the top of my head that really referenced previous arcs.

    Skip the new 52 stuff.
    Read spurrier's.

Honestly, its 300 issues and like 5 minis. Just read till you dont want to read no more.

I have runs im not a fan of (most agree with me) but i wont ruin them because you might like em.
