At this point no. The opportunity to, somewhat, recover it was with the early popularity The Mandalorian enjoyed however, they squandered that. There has also been no mass revaluation of the Sequels - due to both them being that bad and a lack of supportive popular games/cartoons/novels/comics. Disney or whoever could try to do some Old Republic trilogy or some trilogy far past the Sequels however, 1) there is no reason to believe it would be good, 2) that there would be actual interest, and 3) it seems difficult considering how fractured people are about Star Wars at this point.

      >Disney or whoever could try to do some Old Republic trilogy or some trilogy far past the Sequels
They would never do that because that would be appealing to the old white straight male demographic, which is toxic and the enemy.

      >Disney or whoever could try to do some Old Republic trilogy
You mean the prequels. The Republic in the prequels IS the Old Republic. EU writers ignored that fact and did their own thing, unnecessarily muddling up the lore.

          >The OLD republic is considered to be the Republic from 25000 to 1000 years before the Battle of Yavin.
Again, that's the EU. The Republic in the prequels was intended to be the actual Old Republic. Before it, was 1000 years of a Sith-ruled galaxy. The Sith having been formed 2000 years before the movies, by a rogue Jedi Knight and his followers.

            Anonymous

The EU existed before the prequels, my very young Padawan.
Lucas did not allow stories to be set before ANH before TPM was released, but once in production he allowed it and let the EU be fleshed out in that temporal direction.

Unless you can specifically show me a citation where he mentioned that they were separate canons even back then, I will have to call BS. Lucas specifically forbade “prequel” stories, because he wanted to keep continuity straight. So him producing the prequels and suddenly throwing caution to the wind in that regard does not make too much sense.

              Anonymous

It makes fine enough sense. Licensed material being disbarred from doing certain shit is standard. The material needed to sell, and they wouldn't if fans didn't think it mattered. That ban was there to keep everything consistent for the fans who'd buy it. Lucas wasn't beholden to the EU, the EU was beholden to him and him only.

I consider myself lucky that I was a kid/teen at the sweet spot when Star Wars was getting fleshed out in the 90s and 00s. A lot of great expanded universe stuff that lived up to the potential of the SW setting. It felt like SW rather than all the sad hollow interpretations Disney puts out.

Yeah, the IP going down the tubes is a huge opportunity cost because there was so much you could do in that universe but at the same time, a lot of people already did a lot with it. Between the six Lucas films, the comics, the novels, the games and everything else Star Wars has a about as much content available as any franchise ever created. Even if you ignore the Disneyshit entirely there's more than enough already existing content And if it's not enough, hell, just move along to a related adjacent IP. I moved on to the Aliens franchise after my childhood obsession with Star Wars and that's its own rabbit hole. There's always something else to get into.

I kinda feel the same about capeshit now, too. If they're going to bastardize or kill off all the OG characters I like, well I I still have everything from the 60's through the 90's and that's a lot. I have 50+ years of Peter Parker comics, I don't need to put up with this Miles Morales bullshit

Its not bullshit. they care about money, they just got stupid. A shitload of "analysts" told them that perusing the woke agenda and pandering to extreme political groups would get the more money. For some reason they never questioned these claims and made a bunch of shit movies and actually for a while did make profit. Now they are losing money and too entrenched in their current path to deviate.
they need better leadership. Kathleen has proven she cant make good decisions.

Yeah, but she is rightfully hated by the majority of the people. So she's not overrated. She's rated accordingly. Whereas Revan is wanked, because he is a videogame character, and people feel investment and ownership over him and his story. He is literally you, and you like it when you are a power fantasy all powerful mary sue of galactic importance. More so, most videogame fans are moronic children or manchildren, making them doubly insufferable.

Gay mary sue self insert from an overrated videogame. Tales of the Jedi was better than KOTOR ever was, which was "The Force Awakens" of its time, which took cool and interesting and new aesthetics and opted out for creatively bankrupt rip offs to score familiarity and nostalgia points. KOTOR babies are low IQ manchildren.

One of the big problems of nu-Wars is that no one involved in it wants to make anything original because they're too afraid of losing the thin thread that keeps the new content united to the Star Wars series, and for good reason since below the superficial none of the new movies and shows feel like they belong to the same saga as the OT or PT.

Until Episode 9 Disney was full in OT wankery mode so everything was a facsimile of things from the OT or a "bigger and better" version (Starkiller base). When that well ran dry they started doing the same thing with the Clone Wars era.

Why bother being hung up on something that doesn't resemble what you once loved and never will again? Take the memories and passion you once had for it and invest them somewhere else.

The Prequels did do much more extensive world building so makes sense. Didn't have as compelling an adventure or characters though. Everything Disney has done has shrunk or regressed that world though or just sucked the life out of it.

The Prequels themselves shrunk the world by making the character relationships unfathomably moronic for the sake of cheap pandering and audience familiarity. But yes, the characters are mostly pigswill too.

You can. The idea of the droids being the consistent lens through which we see this large story is interesting but it isn't something the movies actually do. They just feel shoehorned in the prequels.

The EU has always been the main driver for lore in Star Wars. As Plinkett pointed out, a lot of stuff was not explained in the movies, it just existed as a backdrop or background character. The settings, the various Jedi we saw but never knew even the names of, etc. But I do prefer the environs and characters of the prequels, overall.

The real issue with the OT trilogy and prequels is that they are only separated by like 20 years when they operate as if they are centuries apart. Having Vader and Obi Wan be mortal caused this, and Luke / Leia didn't need to be Vader's children. Make the Jedi live super long, and make the OT trilogy about the remnants of Jedi led by Obi Wan / Yoda and the Rebellion led by Leia and whoever vs. Sith a la Vader and Sidious. Having the Jedi / force users in general live super long adds to the mysticism and power of the Force. Instead however we got the slop we got.

the sequels being canon is pretty much a dead end route. the only smart thing they can do is either retcon them out or turning them into a dark timeline with some eventually moronic timetravel/multiverse crap. EP 9 is a literal blight on the whole franchise right now.

I rewatched 9 recently for the first time since the theaters and it's utterly insane. And I don't care, I pretty much like all Star Wars series/movies "for what they are," I liked 7 and 8 a lot, but Jesus Christ is 9 just a rabid, unhinged dog. Some things I forgot:

-Palpatine using his super lightning attack and taking out all the rebel (but not his own) fleet

-The MCU "they fly now? They fly now" humor is one thing, but basically any time there's a joke, they do like, a triple joke, like they couldn't decide on which one to use, so they went with all of them. It's not reddit, it's fricking Channel Awesome tier

-How undeveloped the larger plot is. Like, characters will talk about "winning the war," but what's the war? "First order bad," sure, but what are the rebels going to replace them with if they win? There's like, 3 dozen proper rebels under Leia's command, are they going to be the new galactic government?

I understand the logic behind every SW movie, even the ones I don't especially enjoy. 9 is on an unmatched level of gibberish.

        Anonymous

I like how the concept for the First Order was "what if the Nazis hiding in Argentina built an atomic bomb" so the whole Resistance thing made sense, in that nobody in the New Republic thought some Imperial remnant cult was a threat to anyone but humored Leia with a couple squadrons out of respect, but then Rian just decided they were the Empire again
but, of course the New Republic would have a huge navy, it's a galaxy full of smugglers and pirates and of course the government would have to police trade lanes

It’s pretty much dead. If I was a Lucasfilm exec though, I would immediately cancel all other projects and develop an Episode 10. I’d find a way to bring the Skywalkers back, probably through Kylo and Rey’s child or something, and wait three years between movies and seven between trilogies. Basically try to turn it back into an event rather than a commodity which in the long run will bring in more dough. Also, Star Wars is nothing without Skywalkers and lightsabers. It’s a family saga. Nobody cares about anything else and making it a huge sandbox.

B: Investors pull their heads out of their asses, replace execs, new execs follow A. Probability: Shareholders just voted to keep current execs so they have until next shareholders' meeting to unfrick themselves unless WW3 happens first.

    Star Wars is fine.

In fifty years, the original 6 movies (sorry prequel seethers) are going to stand the test of time as hallowed Americana. Disney is going to continue to fumble with their ownership of the IP until it goes into public domain in 2072. Long before that point however, the public will regard the Disney contributions as -at best- apocrypha like the old EU or more likely a sad mostly-forgotten joke with minimal cultural impact.

The fandom is harder to predict. It's likely that the cultists of today will all die off/move on but there's a chance that Star Wars will turn into one of those things that young boys have phases of obsession towards like how some boys get into cowboys or knights for a few years. Sometimes those phases never end and those kids grow up to larp at renaissance fairs. There's a possibility something similar could happen for Star Wars. In which case you will see people playing dress-up as Stormtroopers until the day you die.

Every so often a filmmaker will produce a retelling of the original story like any other popular folk tale or classic story. Star Wars will be iterated upon ad nauseum and with variable quality like Frankenstein or Robin hood.

The only major caveat to all this is where tech goes in the next couple decades. It seems increasingly likely that you will be able to prompt an AI tool to generate the entirety of Return of the Jedi with Ewoks replaced by Wookiees and Leia is a nudist. If that happens, there's no predicting anything let alone the fate of Star Wars.

Star Wars isn't going to survive the zoom ziggers. There's a huge generational gap that cannot be bridged because of the few zoomers who have seen Star Wars have determined it is, in fact, cringe, and will never like Star Wars the way that you do and their peers will follow suit.
Even if you did throw out everything and start with the OG trilogy it's hopeless. Zoomers live in their own isolationist bubble and don't go outside, don't have dreams or aspirations and can only relate to their favorite streamer giving them a shout out on their birthday. There isn't anything out there that really appeals to them, certainly not pew pew space wizard.
And if not that then pretty much everybody in mass media is either a feminist, israelite or talentless nepo baby and they aren't going to leave politely. They'll rape the Star Wars corpse to squeeze every last DEI point and penny out of it until everybody outright hates it.
While Star Wars will likely float around occasionally popping up for the next century, nobody will ever be growing up with it, inculcated with the cultural craze. Meaning to them it'll just be a neat movie, but nothing special. Star Wars was released in a time when people cared about things like space and what the future will be like and were generally very happy so it makes sense that it could affect people deeply. Not so much anymore.
Star Wars is doomed to die with the 40 year old millennial manchildren.

Step 1: Abandon ship! The Star Wars franchise has been reduced to rubble or you could say the life support is failing.

Step 2: Hire masculine writers who don't hate traditional families and sex roles. Have them make a new space fantasy.

Step 3: Slowly rebuild credibility by not hiring anyone who pushes woke bullshit.

Problem: You will need to gain control over many a central bank and lending institution to get enough money to make it big, so learning how banking works (at your local college,) and then creating a bank dedicated to crafting superior quality space stories that will be turned into films with a message should be your first step.

Immediately adapt George's Sequel Treatment with him as Creative Lead. Fire Kennedy & Filoni.

Immediately greenlight canceled LucasArts games and announce Battlefront 3. Full Clone Wars DLC partnerships with Helldivers 2 with delivery within 6 months (i.e. Christmas 2024).

Immediately cancel all High Republic fanfiction and related IPs without further elaboration. New print editions of 'Legends' Omnibuses, specifically a Rogue Squadron one-off film tie in (feat. Wedge Antilles as lead character, Mark Hamill de-aged/whatever) and a Splinter in the Mind's Eye film following it (original in-between Empire & ROTJ one off film that was almost made).

    >Or is it doomed forever?

Depends whether George's Iger endorsement was just protecting his stock position in the company or because he's literally Epstein'd and compelled to; judging by Iger's memoirs laughing about fricking him over in sale negotiations, probably the latter. A Peltz/Perlmutter takeover without Iger in the picture is mandatory for any change of any kind at Disney and Lucas Film.

After a George Sequel film, an adaptation of the Mandalorian Wars in the Prequels style would 'rhyme'. Also 501st from late war to post-Order 66 training in COIN & combating Jedi without Vader babysitting them as the final clone-only units in the Imperial Army highlighting Vader's intention to overthrow Palps, and feeling betrayed by the reintroduction of slavery; set up Star Killer material should be the long term targets, if they had anything approaching vision creatively or financially.

I know most people would disagree, but it would honestly be pretty easy to salvage star wars. Just do a few quality, standalone movies or shows. The Jedi Apprentice or Rogue Squadron books would be good source material, or I guess inspiration would be a better word. An adventure of the week series starring a master and apprentice could be a big hit if the two characters were compelling enough, and a war drama a la Band of Brothers about the Rebellion pushing back the Empire system by system and becoming the new dominant power in the galaxy would be pure kino.

But of course they would never do this. Star Wars could be fixed, but it won't be because it's just not in good hands.

Maybe, but there's also not glowing swords and magic and huge space battles in real life either. Maybe people would like to see cool stuff that doesn't happen in real life plus people who are better looking than real life people who are also morally better than real life people, and that's a good formula for an epic movie.

The weird thing is that when real life people do heroic stuff, charging into burning buildings to save strangers or whatever, there's news stories about it, because that really is the sort of stuff people want to see and hear about. All the studios have to do is write it! But they refuse.

The reality about Star Wars is that it was never more than a decent sci fantasy story, that captured the attention and autism of tons of young people when it came out because it was a forerunner for the genre. Same as Star Trek. There was never anything amazing about it, really. Just a unique setting.

Then somehow it got inflated into the best thing ever, likely thanks to Lucas's israelite-tier shilling of the prequels. Was that the first time a Hollywood franchise got shilled that bad? Anyway, ever since, the franchise has been all about appealing to every human being under the sun. That, plus the fact that the series was never that great to begin with, meant it was rushed into a grave from then onwards.

Forbidden Planet is essentially a feature length Star Trek episode before Star Trek. What makes Star Trek lasting is that it's a great show. So too for the Star Wars OT (give or take RotJ).

Honestly, the only way to salvage SW, is to remake the sequel trilogy. What needs to happen, is to acknowledge the first iteration, as a dream. Rey wakes up and retraces her steps recalling the dream of the sequel trilogy. This makes the trilogy work as a shitty dream callback, while the new sequel trilogy fixes what went wrong. It’s literally the only way SW can be salvaged. There are so many sequences that only make sense if it had happened in a dream, so much nonsense. Let the sequel trilogy work as a guide for the new one.
