Most of those Americans are moronic and think you're "living paycheck to paycheck" if all your money goes to spending + savings. I knew a guy putting 20% into his 401(k) who said he lived paycheck to paycheck.

I live in Australia; and I remember an anglo friend of mine was getting charged $50 a week to live with his parents as soon as he turned 18. This was nearly 20 years ago when $50 could actually buy you something.

            Anonymous

I have 2 brothers and a sister and my parents either charged us $100 rent when we turned 19 or we could do yardwork/etc. for her. There is no excuse to not have a job at that age. Why should they have to work for a living and you don’t?

It's far more efficient to spend money late in life when you've had a lifetime to accumulate it than early in life when you could invest it.

                Anonymous

You are correct, but what does that have to do with not helping your ageing parents and remaining a leech on them while they continue to pay for all your food and etc? If no one had to worry about money that’d be one thing but bills, food and transportation are still a thing which are being entirely covered by your parents who have no choice in the matter.

What? I’m the one who said our parents had us get a job and pay $100 in rent or help with the house and yard. I’m 26 now. That’s honestly such a good deal since apartments around here were at least $800 without utilities. Did your parents just let you lay on the couch and do whatever after high school? I’m fricking jealous if so.

most parents nowadays just let their kids in their 20s smoke weed and watch anime so what do you expect kek

Every dollar your child spends costs them ten times as much as the dollars you spend. Charging your child $500 a month for rent is equivalent to charging them $5000 a month when they're your age. Do you need me to explain to you why that is evil for a parent to do?

I didn’t realize that Cinemaphile‘s parents are all rich and young with no need for help. My mom had to quit work after getting back surgery and my dad worked at GM, not every family has no struggles making ends meet like yours did.
Did you know that back in the day kids had to help maintain the field when they turned 13?

Did the same thing, just bought and furnished a new renovated and updated 2400sqft house with a 1500sqft basement in a nice white suburban town with some of the states best schools that me and my wife and future children will be able live in forever and I’m feeling a little uneasy because we’re down to only 30k in savings (effectively 22k because she needs 8k to finish her masters and 6th year to get a pay raise for her job) so I’m feeling a little uneasy but it’ll be ok. She’ll finish her school and get big raises and has a great pension so we’ll never have to worry for retirement, within the next 5 years I’m sure we’ll be able to refinance for a lower rate and save 600+ a month, and she was adopted and has elderly boomer parents that will die when we’re in our 40s and we’re set to inherit at least 1 mil in todays money so we’ll be able to pay off any debt we have by then with that and have hundreds of thousands left over for retirement. Just feels very different to go from having over 200k in your bank account and investments to only 20.
