A novelty only, and not what the director intended in terms of framing.

The way I see it open matte is nothing but an Easter egg hunt for the viewer. "Oh boy! I just saw the boom mic at the top of the frame!" The only sensible way to view a movie is in the aspect ratio the director intended.

I like seeing nude scenes in open matte, and witnessing body parts not originally meant to be shown

Are we getting IMAX Blu-Ray? Does that mean we have to buy 1.90:1 8K 3D HDR TVs now?

Really based. I really love open matte/IMAX.
If I'm a filmmaker, I would shoot in 4:3 Super 35. Have the film projected to fit whatever the aspect ratio of the cinema is (cropped to 2.39:1 in CinemaScope cinemas, 1.85:1 in flat cinemas, 1.90:1 in IMAX Digital, and 1.43:1 in IMAX Laser).
The Blu-ray and digital releases will be full 16:9, but the DVD will be 4:3 Fullscreen with no Widescreen release.

Some Sony 4K UHDs are IMAX like Zombieland: Double Tap, The Angry Birds Movie 2, Charlie's Angels 2019, and Bad Boys for Life.
There are also some Shout! Factory IMAX Enhanced releases, which are just nature documentaries and also the upcoming 4K UHD of Evangelion:3.0+1.11 Thrice Upon a Time.

There is also an IMAX Enhanced 4K UHD of Evangelion:3.333 You can (not) redo., exclusive to Japan. The US is getting the IMAX 4K UHD of Shin Eva before Eva Q.

What's weird is that none of these IMAX Enhanced UHDs are IMAX open matte.

Naming movies with open matte extra nudity visible isn't helping this thread. We need screenshots (or better yet webms). You open matte guys are pirates, so you've got the movies on your HDs. Let's see it!

Is there an open matte of the LOTR trilogy? I was able to find a 35mm scan of the movies, but it's still widescreen.

Open matte is THE biggest scam the industry has ever pulled. They sell standard tickets for 2:35:1 but then pretend that there's an "Imax" version which has the top and bottom uncropped, and they sell that to idiots for a higher price. There's no reason that the "Imax" version can't be shown anywhere.

      >"open matte" is not fully open
what did they mean by this

It's still what the director wants you to focus on, IMAX is moronic.

it's just a deal they make with Imax where they can sell less-cropped versions of the movie for a higher price. they sell these versions to HDTV channels also because that's standard. but they when you buy a standard ticket or a DVD they crop it to 2:35 for no reason at all.

          >but they when you buy a standard ticket or a DVD they crop it to 2:35 for no reason at all.
Because that's what the director wants the film to actually be. Any film where the director wants a taller aspect ratio is released that way everywhere.

give me a break. the Avengers movies were all directed by TV directors who have always finished their show in 16:9. Joss Whedon even did that for the first Avengers. but after that, Disney realized they could sell the 16:9 crop at a higher price by pretending it was Imax and mandated a 2:35 cut for standard showings.

              >thinking directors always want to work with 16:9 because they got their start in television

              Anonymous

That's exactly how it is. If a director wants a higher ratio, that's what they'll use to frame the movie in the first place.
If Disney cared that much about always releasing an expanded IMAX version, they would force directors to not use anamoprhic lenses. Indy 5 couldn't even get a proper IMAX version because it was shot anamorphic.
