Novella, light novel means like "train reading", simple breezy books that have come to have the association of being otaku shit. The first Suzumiya Haruhi is 200 pages
Most light novels are around 200 pages.
Unfortunately most light novels are also part of a series with 20+ volumes so they end up being an insanely long read. It heavily depends on the author whether there's just insane amounts of filler and repetition or if they actually make use of all the space available.

American version is better, it's interesting one read book that you will soon forget, but one thing is done better in the book - there is no kill switch queen, and even though they kill the transmitter alien, they still cannot leave the cycle because the main hero and the girl are also transmitters and one of them has to go.
I think the books were better. In the movie it's sort of implied that the MC's strength comes from memorizing the patterns of his enemies over and over. In the book he just gains the skills to kill the enemies.
