Rewriting Quelkrist Falconer, a Japanese woman who died 300 years before he was born into his bullsyke black ex-lover who also invented the envoys instead of them being the UN protectorate special forces and she wanted to destroy the cortical stacks instead of seeing them as humanity's liberation..... No the entire thing was a horrific rewrite. A Land Fit for Heroes would have been a significantly better idea to make a series, it already had 2 gay characters (ones literally a pederast boy fricker, ones a black lesbian who owns female sex slaves). At least Netflix would know what to do with that material.

This isn't about a hard limit. It's about them directly and literally inverting the central theme tied into the high concept sci-fi technology the setting is built around to meet a woke agenda that these jolly African Americans seem to insist didn't happen.

so you did read the book(s). so do you understand how it wouldn't be possible to even mention a book-accurate falconer in a tv series? we don't even need to go into how it seems to be forbidden to imply the united states or UN engages in or ever would engage in literal terrorism to further its agendas on an institutional level.

                Anonymous

Quite frankly I don't see how it isn't possible. Maybe I'm just autistic and genuinely can't tell what a normie would think watching the show if it was more accurate to the books; none of the falconer quotes from the books that I can recall specifically stand out as something you couldn't say on television. This just kind of reminds me of Leviathan: On the matter and form of a commonwealth both ecclesiastical and civil by Thomas Hobbes. You can buy it in a book store and no one will stop you but if you start talking about the Felicity and Misery of Man in front of normies there are people who will become insanely angry with you for doing it because there is a very clear negative space in the data that points towards mechanical functions of secret societies.

the point isn't as much that quellcrest was too hot for TV, but that the concept of envoys needed to be bent around and turned inside out in order to be allowed on TV. as state funded/trained/deployed terrorists are a big no-no. then since quellcrest was little more than a footnote in the book, but also a revolutionary, he gets a woke makeover and becomes the source of the terrorist main character's training.

The revolution was a silly little thing from centuries ago and his sister, who had been alive that whole time and become corrupted with age, came up with a plan to rescue her brother who was the only thing that actually meant anything to her. the show's plot is an example of a surface level read of the book's premise, that only works if the premise isn't articulated at all, and current year sentiments are shoved in to replace any illustration of how humanity would be changed by being freed from death/disease. as the show is built entirely around currently held understandings of "human nature."

Paul Verhoeven was pissed that Starship Troopers was a fascist novel so he wanted to make an anti-fascist movie to explicitly shit on it but he accidentally made a pro-fascist movie instead.

He's always been very bad at communicating his own intended messages, such as "Do not give guns to robots no matter how awesome they are" and "I strongly discourage you from sticking your dick in 1990 Sharon Stone"

verhoven read enough of starship troopers to understand it was an unintentional endorsement of fascism, and the movie leaned as far into that as it possibly could.

the altered carbon show was someone barely understanding that "people are like immortal now and stuff?" and then just stuffing in current year politics.

In the books immortality was seen as the great equalizer because the average person could afford to live forever and the people with a 1,000 year head start won't matter when everyone is 10k+ years old and lives on their own moon cause humanity is the dominate space faring race in the galaxy and people have literally forever to take it all for themselves. The series takes the completely opposite social justice horse shit approach saying the technology should not exist because it gives the wealthy too much of an advantage and that for life to matter it needs to be limited (joke being that by the 3rd book Takeshi is older than the Myths were at the start of the first book and all the technologies the Myths could afford were affordable to practically anyone who wanted them enough). It takes all of the implications of the scale and scope of eternity and its implications on inequity (aka Read the Felicity and Misery of Man you subhuman) and throw it out the window to be more politically convenient to the intended audience.

And you should never bring up the fact you read a book once to make yourself seem smart on an imageboard that primarily discusses marvel movies.

To be clear, Altered Carbon is not classical literature. You read YA fiction designed to be sold for $10 a copy at Target. But even if it was Shakespeare saying "the play was better" is STILL not a valid critique of film or television.

Richard Morgan isn't YA lit. Ringil Eskaeth the protag of his fantasy series is a homosexual pedophile, unapologetically and everyone has to put up with him because he's the only person in a position to emancipate the White slaves sold by his homeland to pay off ward debt to a foreign country so people either just choose not to believe it and the ones who know can't do anything about it. That is more Netflix speed these days I think, they should have just made A Land Fit For Heroes.

It literally inverted the central concept the entire setting and narrative was built around in order to be woke and at this point I know you're being a bad faith actor for not seeing or caring. Good for you if you liked the show, that's like saying you like Shakespeare because you saw the Muppet Baby's version of Romeo and Juliet.

                Anonymous

The central concept of the entire "setting" is a brother and sister's bond across centuries in a world where immortality for the rich is achieved through uploaded consciousness while the poor remain trapped in poverty. Classic dystopian fiction.

                > that's like saying you like Shakespeare because you saw the Muppet Baby's version of Romeo and Juliet.
No Black person. What's happening here is you're saying you don't like Muppet Baby's version of Romeo and Juliet because you saw award winning actors do the original play at the globe theatre once. That's not a fair comparison you fricking idiot, OF COURSE they're not the same, and only a complete frickwit would judge one on the basis of the other.

That isn't what it is. It's a setting where everyone is immortal and the poor still lack the ambition the elite do and squander the fact if they just spent 500 years doing something they wouldn't have anything left to b***h about but most of them are too cowardly and their psychology hasn't caught up with what the cortical stack makes possible.

No dipshit. It's their psychology hasn't caught up with the fact they have immortality and the difference between the rich and the poor is that the rich and poor structure their families differently to adapt to this and the poor are observable doing it wrong but even that doesn't matter cause they have 1000000000+ years to learn. That's the point.

                >It's a setting where blah blah blah some stuff from the books
No Black person, it isn't. That's what you're complaining about, that it isn't that. They changed and you're having a b***h remember?
Meanwhile if you look at what they changed it TOO instead of what they changed it FROM you can judge it on the basis of what it IS instead of what you think it SHOULD BE.

It is the difference between a normative argument which is just your dumb opinion, and a positive statement which examines the facts.

                And the facts are thus:
                1. the setting is not woke as it makes no commentary on nor bears resemblance to America in the 21st century, nor were any production decision made with American politics in the 21st century in mind. And
                2. It's a really good story with a really cool twist. Finally
                3. The book doesn't affect 1 or 2 either way.

State backed terrorists have been in Canadian sci-fi with no problems since the 90s. I guess I got spoiled with shows like Continuum which stars the villain, an agent of the corporate congress who has gone back in time to do terrorism to protect the dystopian hellscape she comes from so her family won't be erased from history when the seperate terrorists go back in time (the good guys) but the story is from her perspective and she doesn't want her children to not exist while struggling with the fact the good guys are trying to help people and she has literally become a selfish monster who tries to kill the younger innocent versions of people dangerous to the regime in the future. That's Canadian science fiction for you though, we're not Americans so as long as the big bads are standings for the American government we call it like we see it.

          None of that constitutes woke.
The body was supposed to be that of a supersoldier, Joel Kinnaman looks the part and has the chops. Tick.
Waspfu played her part brilliantly and since she was already recognizable from Dollhouse the audience instantly recognized her typecast. Tick.
Rich dude played by James Purefoy. Tick.
Weird cult thing wasn't an allegory for anything.

Not even a sniff of 21st century politics trying to teach me a lesson about not saying the n-word while raping a co-worker the gender of whom I had assumed.
          Verdict: Not woke.

            Anonymous

The plot isn't woke..... besides wanting to destroy cortical stacks because it allows people to build wealth forever without even having to pass it on). The casting decisions and rewrites applied to the show were made entirely through a woke lens and having cortical stacks be a tool of oppression instead of humanity's liberation is that direct odds with the themes of the book. Go get shot.

The importance of the stack premise is a fig leaf. Of course you can do whatever you want with your scifi storyline, but objectively, obviously, Kinnaman to Mackie is such a fricking downgrade that it's absolutely jarring. Practically comedic.

    >no one stays in AI hotels because they'll datamine everything about you and then hound you like a creepy stalker for the rest of time. this is useful to the main character's purposes though

    Show:
    >AI hotels are completely awesome and will do literally anything in their power to help you, and their powers are absurdly massive. uh... shit why don't more people stay in them... uh... its because they're also evil usually yea.

Also Roni Fugate from 3 stigmate of palmer eldritch in the movie version I am planning in my head.

They can't even do a proper sequel at this point. An Adaptation would be an abomination.
So you get Waspfu to play mirage, and then who's playing Syndrome? If you're lucky it will Josh Gad, though it will probably be a black woman who's actually the victim not the villain and the real villain is racism.

I could have sworn she actually cosplayed Faith from Mirror's Edge once but it might have been a shoop
