Almost as much money was lost by Universal to profit participation in Openheimer (since even fricking Cillian Murphey got paid from box office participation) as the entire movie 'cost' to make, meaning the budget you read about should really be doubled.
Fricking Five Nights At Freddy made about $160M in profits for Universal and Blum, and Oppenheimer only made Universal $40M more than that when all was said and done.
What do you think it would be easier to do?
For Blum to pump out two more sequels to Five Nights and not pay Hutcherson much more than a salary increase, which even if it was $3-5M MORE for the first sequel and more for the second, with the fact that they wouldn't have to deal with DAY and DATE on Peawiener (which might be dead by then) and would haves IMAX and PLF screens, will likely start with another $10-20M more in box office?
Or for Nolan to come up with not just another zeitgeist marketing opportunity like he lucked into with Barbie, with plenty of casuals willing to go on dates in pink dresses and brown boring suits? But to come up with TWO?
I think you are discounting Nolan's brand. He pulled off hits for WB with Interstellar and Dunkirk both made north of half-a-billion.
Your point as a whole is correct though. Hollywood seems to have lost all business sense. Mid-budget and low-budget movies made most of the money via box office and video sales. Now they are dumped on streaming making no direct revenue. Since all the big studios have started their own platforms, they are not even earning licenses.
Recent successes like FNAF, Anyone but you, and Beekeeper might provide them with a reality check.

I had a female cousin literally squeal to me that Loki was the only reason she was seeing this shit when she saw the trailer, and she doesn’t know anything about Marvel (or comics) outside of the Loki series. She hasn’t even watched any of the previous phases, she just obsesses over Loki while watching the series with her Mom. I used to enjoy Loki as a character years before the series came out, but the recent fans he’s been getting have actively made me hate him. I can’t be the only one….right?

I would predict this to be similar but Shawn Levys track record is mediocre. That said, his Reynolds led films got decent to good reviews (68 to 80)

I hope they manage to undo the ending of Logan, or at least imply that time-travel/multiverse frickery that that universe gets a happier ending. Wade already knows about it so hopefully it gets lampshaded in the movie and at the end, because he's become buds with Logan properly now, he decides, "Frick it, I'm gonna go save the old canuck so he can raise that kid."
