>best animated film to come out this year?
Pretty much compared to shit like ruby gillman, elemental, and spiderverse. It's sad that a mediocre product shat out by illumination is one of the best cartoons of the year.
Alright lets review.
Rock Dog 3
Elemental
Spider Verse 2
Super Mario
Ladybug and cat Noir
Ruby Gilman
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem.
Not counted. Home movies Barbie, Black little mermaid.
Off topic, but why does this mediocre-at-best movie get people so defensive? They're almost as bad as pokegays.
This thread, I think is Cinemaphile spillover. That's Cinemaphile trying to be nice mind you. Some of it is movie shill shitposting I think.
>How is it that this is best animated film to come out this year?
It isn't.
Just watched it recently (because it's on streaming already)
Was surprised at how unimportant Mario was.
He got pummeled by DK until he won, got blue shelled, saved Luigi, gave up vs Bowser (despite not giving up being his thing), and then got the power-star to win.
It's... well I wasn't impressed by the main character. And the Mario brother's voices were awful. Jack Black was surprisingly good as Bowser.
>Gave up Vs bowser (despite not giving up being his thing)
And then he got the motivation from his commercial to return to the fight? It baffles me how people call this movie paper thin and yet they are confused by things like this.
The film is about Mario adapting to being a hero, it's an origin plot. If they made him super confident and knowledgable of the entire world from the beginning there wouldn't be any point to the story.
>how unimportant Mario was
How? All of his trials and tribulations culminate into the final battle between him and Bowser when he almost gives up until he realizes how far he got despite his father and family putting him down in the beginning of the film. Despite not being instantly good at platforming, getting his ass beat by a gorilla, losing his younger brother and almost dying in an eel, he was still alive.
God it’s like you snot it’s haven’t even watched the film.
Anyone grabbing the power star would have beat Bowser.
Case and point: Luigi also plows through the army.
It's not important that it's Mario, it could've been Toad or DK or Spike. None of Mario's traits made him the right person for the job.
Luigi was reminded of how his brother was always there to help him, and when he saw him stand up to bowser he gained the courage to risk his life just so he could get the star.
Sure but Mario & Luigi had to withstand Bowser’s fire before they can. I don’t think Spike or Uncle Tony for would have been brave or reckless enough to do that.
It would be funny if it happens, but the academy will choose the spiderverse movie.
I haven't watch it because I didn't like the first one that much, but I feel like it's the type of animated movie that is an easy choice for the Oscar's, if that makes any sense.
>best animated film to come out this year?
Pretty much compared to shit like ruby gillman, elemental, and spiderverse. It's sad that a mediocre product shat out by illumination is one of the best cartoons of the year.
Those have quality, creativity, fun and soul. Also visually are a billion fricking times better than Super Mario, wich has a very subpar animation. But again, what do you expect from a movie from a really mediocre animation studio and being directed by the creators of the fricking TTG?
>spiderverse is better because it makes spidermen across the universe murderous psychos because a black kid having a dad is a universal irregularity
You have terrible taste in films
NTA I hate the plot for spiderverse but think that the animation quality is it's only saving grace and carries the movie hard. It like avatar way of water, you watch it because it's visual stunning but when you take a few second to think about the story, you realize how dumb it all is
>Those have quality, creativity, fun and soul
No they don't, they have the same generic message as Mario, neither of them develop anything new to animation and instead rely on their huge budgets to look superior than actually creative indie and small studio projects that explore new messages, unique characters and try new art styles.
>and try new art styles
Across the Spiderverse right here, wich is even more revolucionary than the first one, contrarian homosexual

It's okay if you despise it but don't pretend that fricking modern Pixar is art, it's hardly the same team at this point.
Elemental is unintentionally hilarious because it uses fire people as a metaphor for immigrants despite fire being a terrible metaphor because it is destructive without reason. And the interracial romance being solved by magic is laughable
Elemental is pretty shitty because the story would only work as a short 15 mins animation at most not a 2 hours long movie.

Pretty much. Ideas like Elemental should've been reserved for one of those 2 minute shorts they shat out before the real movie started but modern pixar takes whatever they thought of while taking a shit and think that it's brilliant like "what if a girl transformed into a red panda and it was a metaphor for menstruation while she used her new found powers that are a metaphor for periods to make money to go to a concert so she can get wet for pretty boy bands"

I agree, turning red would be ok if it was a just a 15 minutes episode as well, a Pixar 15 to 30 min per episode series focusing on random stories would be better than desperately trying to make a clearly limited idea into a full movie and act like there was some kind of deep message about it, it does not help that Pixar is no longer focusing on side characters making them just background characters with 2 lines.
Funny enough, even many reviewers who are politically left leaning joked that the fire metaphor was a dumb choice because of the implications. I think the "we'll represent that interracial relationships are hard to kids by showing people who will literally die if they get close to each other" just as silly as the "they wont die now because they just love each other that much"
...and the fire woman and water dude will essentially be sterile with each other
NTA but how are those movies any less "goyslop" than Mario?
>Elemental is modern pixar goyslop that even dreamworks in running laps on them these day >Spiderverse is another multiverse capeshit story and it's not even the first multiverse capeshit this summer. It's carried hard by the animation quality
Illumination's mario was bland but these days just passing off as ok is the new good standard. But it's not a hill that I want to die on arguing about
Tbh I was more thinking about the "bad guys" and "puss in boots 2" but cant ignore that piece of shit gillman doing so much damage that it set their reputation back several years
I genuinely liked this film. Don't understand why this of all things gained the ire of the gays on Cinemaphile enough to spam bait threads constantly. Guess I should probably lower my standards even more for this board. How low can we truly go?
I thought it was fine and just kinda bland at worst. I only had low expectations because it was a vidya movie. I liked the nintendo references and if I were a kid watching this, I'd be losing my mind in excitement

I know it's anecdotal but I saw no ads for this movie irl, the few I saw on youtube made me think it was maybe one of those fanmade/foreign animations that eventually go straight to stream service like picrel. I was surprised to see this was a dreamworks product right after they came from the high that was PiB2
Spider-Verse is shit,i t's an awful story, Miguel is in the wrong due to having to face an impossible situation and Miles is in the right because he said so even though all the evidence so far show that he's dooming an entire universe, Miles is a bland character with nearly no personality. >contrarian

If the film didn't look nice and wasn't full of nice Mario fan service, no one would give a shit. Jack Black and Charlie Day carry every scene they're in and they're bearly in it
That's only until PAW Patrol 2 comes out, which is going to be a true masterpiece
No but seriously idk what we're going to look back on 2023 for. I guess Miyazaki has made some artsy thing over in Cinemaphile land
>How is it that this is best animated film to come out this year?
It's not, it's a completely generic lazy cash-in made to appeal to literal babies and Nintendo fanboys who make le ebin soiface when [reference] shows up on screen.
The Venture Bros. movie came out this year for frick's sake.
The absolute fricking irony of Cinemaphiletards who unironically believe Mario is a better movie than Spider-Verse trying to tell ANYONE that they have "terrible taste".
That’s just how it is here. The actual quality thing is shit cause brown people or whatever made up reasons while the thing that’s easy to shitpost about like say, Mario movie making billions unironically becomes their bludgeoning stick because at the end of the day, this website cannot get over its addiction to console wars. It just has to adapt from outside of Cinemaphile
Did you actually see spuderverse or are you some moronic homosexual that's placated by colorful imagery. You'll shit on the Mario movie while unironically loving spiderverse for the same reasons you deride the Mario movie over.

Quality based on what? It's bizarre how Spider-Verse shills try to push the movie as great just "because it is...", this site didn't just took The Dark Knight Rises as "kino" back at 2013 simply because critics and audience were praising it or because it was popular, the movie was still mocked here, Spider-Verse 2 story is just a mess.
>highest grossing = best
The Peasants is going to be the best animated film of the year. It will make zero money and not even get nominated for the Oscars.
>loving the most soulless movie illumination hss ever made to "win" the culture war

Not same anon, but this but unironically. In fact, altought of also being mediocre, I have more fun and laughed more with The Rise of Gru than the Super Mario slop.
Yeah this new Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie is amazing. I’m happy Carl had more to do. Although I am confused why changed his race and dresses like a hippie woman now.
>mentions another movie out of nowhere
the topic is literally "How is it that [Mario] is the best animated film to come out this year?" and someone mentioned another movie being better than Mario. Who is the shill?
I think that's intentional and part of the charm though. It's the rougher CG style of Spiderverse but with the classic 90s Nickelodeon gross factor of Rugrats, Aaahh!! Real Monsters, Rocko, etc. right down to the random hand drawn squiggles.
The film is just kinda weird in how it plays out. I'm guessing the whole "Peach Girlboss" thing came late into the writing as it never actually explains why Peach let a complete stranger help her. The rest of the film moves at a stupidly fast speed and is just moving from setpiece to setpiece.
People just love to trash talk Mario because he's another Mickey Mouse and they think they get countercultural cred by trashing a corporate mascot and its associated products. The movie also made too much money for those kinds of people to just ignore, they have to take a Stand an let you know how artsy and punk they are for not liking a children's movie. Nobody likes a winner, and Mario wins by rote.

You don’t even have to like it, but if your alternative is the Mario movie then there’s no way anyone could take you seriously.
This, with the amount of non-white non-male and non-cis characters in Spider-Verse, and the amount of shitting on straight white men, it basically wins by default since the judges don't even watch the animation nominees
>The entertainment industry is a giant shit show swamp that is run by morons who don't know what they are doing and quite frankly don't care

No one said that.
It's the highest GROSSING animated movie this year you dumb frick.

I doubt it will. It's not diverse enough. It's about characters owned by a foreign company. It's a vidya movie.
It'll go to some shit Disney shat out.
